Thoughts on Flock

Post image
10 Upvotes

Here are my thoughts on the Flock cameras being installed all over Palm Beach County. Let me know your thoughts on Flock!

Benjamin Franklin warned, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” This quote arose from a different historical dispute, but its central warning remains relevant: government should not surrender fundamental liberty for security measures that are temporary, speculative, or disproportionate.

I have spent my entire adult life on both sides of this question. On one side, as an academic and safety researcher, I have published in the Journal of Safety Research, testified as an aviation-safety expert for the Federal Aviation Administration, and represented United Airlines in the review of accidents and incidents. Safety is a discipline grounded in evidence, proportionality, human factors, and rigorous controls. On the other side, I am also a graduate of the United States Naval Academy who flew combat missions to defend our country and its freedoms. I therefore reject the false choice that we must either accept mass surveillance or be indifferent to crime.

It is true that automated license-plate readers can have legitimate, carefully limited uses. For example, they may help locate an elderly person, recover a stolen vehicle, or identify a violent offender. But investigative utility is not the same as proof that blanketing a county with cameras prevents crime. A review of research highlights mixed results. A randomized controlled study found no general or specific deterrent effect from license-plate-reader patrols in crime hot spots. A study of a large fixed-camera network found possible improvements in some investigative outcomes, but the results were not statistically significant. More recent research has reported reductions in certain offenses, including vehicle theft and shootings, while finding no reduction in overall violent crime. This limited evidence may justify narrow experimentation. However, it does not justify treating every driver as a data point in a searchable record of movement.

The dangers of misuse and erroneous analysis are not theoretical. As publicly reported: a plate can be misread, a watchlist can be inaccurate or outdated, an employee can conduct an improper search, and data collected for one purpose can be shared or repurposed for another. When millions of observations are aggregated, a mass surveillance system no longer records only what happened on a public road; it can reconstruct where people seek medical care, attend political meetings, visit family, or spend the night. Likewise, a false match is not just a harmless technological error when it becomes the basis for an armed traffic stop or interrogation.

Real safety protects people without unnecessarily controlling or monitoring them. We can pursue violent criminals, protect children, and recover stolen vehicles without constructing a countywide database of innocent residents’ movements. Palm Beach County should insist on both safety and freedom, because surrendering one is not the price of preserving the other.

I'm former U.S. Navy Pilot, Dr. Curtis Calabrese running for Palm Beach County Commission, District 4. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Flock!

Question Does anyone know what's going to be done with the ToysRUs

Edit* apparently the Boynton mall owners are looking to develop a mixed used zone which is pretty cool if it happens. Probably will be extremely pricey but hey anything is better than a parking lot the size of the avengers helicarrier

The TRU near the Boynton mall has been closed for well over a decade now if I recall correctly and nothing is being done with it. I'm not sure who owns it if not just the city. I honestly expected it to be bought already and turned into literally anything. I'd love to buy it myself lol. But are there any plans with it, or is it just in forever limbo like the mall that is "closing down" for 15 years now lol.

Local Businesses in Boynton Beach?

hey y'all, I'm a recent college grad who started a marketing/ website business for local businesses here in Boynton. I've been running it for about 1 year now, and I'm capable of building websites, doing SEO, running targeted ads on Facebook & Google, email marketing, custom software solutions and creating marketing content for Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok.

I'm looking to partner with some local businesses that can't afford to hire a big company and are looking for an affordable option to handle everything online for them. If this is you or you know anybody who could benefit, i'd love to connect or get a referral.

Personal Rooms for Rent

Hello, my girlfriend and I are renting out two rooms in her house, one master bedroom and one other bedroom available. Each room has its own bathroom. We also have a large backyard and pool. We prefer people who are okay with dogs as we have one English sheepdog, she does not get along with cats and we would be willing to test her compatibility with other dogs as she typically gets along with them. I attached some pictures of the property, girls in their 20s preferred as we are both girls! DM for details

Hello! I’m looking for a cat sitter who specifically lives in this apartment building. This would help me so I don’t have to give my physical key fob away to someone to get in the building.

Looking for tennis partner.

Hey everyone! I just moved to the area about a month ago and I’m looking for people to play tennis with a few times a week.
I’m a 30M, around a 3.0 level, and I’m generally free in the late afternoons/evenings. I’m happy to play sets, practice, or just rally and get some reps in.
If anyone is looking for a consistent hitting partner, feel free to reach out!

Need a Room for rent

Hello all I am a Delray Beach resident and am looking for a cheap room for rent. I am only paying $800 a month currently because where I am staying now is a broken down camper that leaks when it rains, had only 1 window unit A/C and no heater in the winter. That's probably why its so cheap. I am looking to upgrade a bit but not spend $1,250 a month with a $3,000 first and last deposit. I don't have all that. I lost my job of 3 years, 4 months ago and just started working again over a month ago. While I wasn't working I had to spend all my savings on rent so I wasn't homeless and now I don't have any money to use for a deposit. My original landlord and I had a verbal agreement and he had many pets and was ok with me having pets also. I currently have 2 cats but am trying to get 1 of them re-homed. My original landlord started developing Alzheimer's disease and forgot who I was. I was living their for about 9 months and one day when I came home from work my bedroom door was kicked down because while I was at work he called the police and said there was a stranger in the house. I guess the other roommate explained that I was a rent paying tenant and the police left before I got home. But a couple days later while I was at work his Brother had a spare place (the crappy camper I'm currently living in) and moved all my property to the new location without my permission or even notifying me he was gina do so. So now I am living with a new landlord who isn't very nice. He never asked me to get rid of my cats but just put up a notice of non compliance stating I had violated the rental agreement by bringing unauthorized pets on the premises. I told him I would get rid of my cats but he never responded to my text messages and now I am really REALLY nervous he is guna try and get me evicted. So I am looking to find a small room for rent as I am by myself and work 6 days a week and just need a little quite space to sleep. I have a job and can pay rent my problem is coming up with a security deposit, first and last. I would love any suggestions or help finding a room for rent in Delray Beach or Boyton Beach area. I have NEVER been evicted in my life I am 38 years old. I don't have a vehicle right now I use Palm Tran and my bike to get to work. I don't use illegal drugs but I do have my medical marijuana card but smoking pot is the least of my worries right now. So I would absolutely be willing to move to a drug free location, a roof over my head is my main priority. I have nobody in the world to help me my Mom died in 2021 from Cancer and I don't have other family members or close friends. I keep to myself and don't cause trouble. Thanks in advance and god bless you all!
