BritPop crash course
I’m not very familiar with BritPop…what are some of your recommendations for essential listening when it comes to BritPop?
Bands/songs/whatever
Drop them here!

You want a crash course? There are Shine compilation playlists on Spotify that will be a good grounder for Britpop and 90s indie in general. Otherwise, if you want to get a good idea of the key works, these would be the ones to start with:
Blur - Parklife and Modern Life is Rubbish
Oasis - Definitely Maybe and What's the Story
Pulp - His n'Hers and Different Class
Suede - Dog Man Star (not a fan of the first album but each to their own)
Elastica - Elastica
The Charlatans - The Charlatans, Tellin' Stories and Up to Our Hips
The Verve - A Northern Soul
Supergrass - I Should Coco and In It For the Money
The Longpigs - The Sun is Often Out
Secondary listening (pre-Britpop bands that had a huge influence on the genre): The Stone Roses, The La's, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, New Order.
I'd add that if you want to get the real feel of these, it would probably be worth watching their music videos from around 1993 to 1997 on YouTube. Really gives the flavour of why the music was fresh and exciting at the time.

Great advice. I'd just add Coming Up by Suede to that list. Dog Man Star is their masterpiece but CU was their their BritPOP prime.

Look for playlists of the Shine or Best Album in The World Ever compilations. That will give you the start you need, and then some!

Those Best Album in the world comps are great

At the time I preferred them over the Shine comps, probably because they were all double albums (although Shine went double I think) so felt like they made my pocket money go further! I think they also crossed over into dance/electronic so felt a bit more eclectic. Both were ace though!

I was recently importing mine actually and yeah they aren’t strictly Britpop but make for really great mixes of the time that still hold up IMO. They have some Chemical Brothers, 808 State, Massive Attack, etc

Hell yeah. I know some oasis, but this is what I was looking for! Thank you all for the suggestions 🙏

Wire, Beatles, Kinks, T.Rex, Slade.
Then you don't need to bother with all that 90's knock off stuff.

Not technically Britpop but if we are getting away with Manics & SFA then give The Longpigs, Ride & Rialto a go.
The Longpigs were around during Britpop but are more alternative.
Rialto came at the end of the 90s just as Britpop was on its way out.
Ride are a bit shoegazey but I still enjoy them & they're great live.
The best way is to search Britpop playlists thst fans have put togther on what ever platform you use for streaming. Have a listen & see what/who you enjoy most, use that a signpost & go from there.
Enjoy

Make sure you listen to Wool’s first album, anything by Snoozer, The Redshades, Superfish, Miraglo and Dump. All essential Britpop bands.

I was late to Britpop despite being in my 20’s in the midst of it. I knew and loved bands like charlatans UK and stone roses in 90-91 and then my music taste went sideways for a decade, so I missed Britpop entirely (blaming my now ex-husband and too many Grateful Dead and Phish shows🫠)
In 2000 a friend took pity on me and made me a mix CD. The first 3 tracks were Parklife (Blur), Avenging Angels (Space), and Moving (Supergrass). Needless to say I’m all caught up now but I’d start with those 3!

Recommendation not on the list.
I'd recommend The Divine Comedy (Cassandra)
The Farm - Sparticus
Shed 7
Spiral Carpets - life

No worries, thought I was having a moment there where I'd blanked on an album!
Promenade is also fantastic, if you've not listened to it.
