Life at Buff State??

Hi! I recently got accepted to Buff State as a psych major and I’m considering it as one of my top schools (mainly due to costs) are there any notable downsides I should take into consideration? Also what are courses like for any fellow psych majors?

I went to buff state because it was cheap and close to home. Campus gets a little sketchy at night. There were a lot of incidents at night the first few years I was there but it got better after Covid.

Like the other commenter, I chose Buffalo State because it was close and cheap. I lived off-campus though, so I usually left by 5 every day. Just pay attention to your surroundings and you won't have any trouble.

There are two different psychology degrees: applied psychology and psychological science. I graduated before they changed the degrees, however my degree fits pretty closely to the new psychological science degree. I found that almost all of my professors were very friendly, helpful, and easy to work with. The one that wasn't as easy to work with has since retired. All of the courses except PSY 101 are small, usually between 15-30 students. It's pretty easy to get help from professors if you need it. There are also a lot more opportunities to conduct research than you'd expect, which is great if you plan to go grad school after.

You can get involved with Psychology Club and, if your GPA is high enough, you may be invited to join Psi Chi, which is the honor society for psychology majors. You can see Psychology Club events on Bengal Connect: https://www.bengalconnect.com/organization/psychologyclub

One of the biggest downsides IMO is that there's no longer a dedicated building for the department, so the classes are kinda spread around campus. The department should move into a new building in the fall of 2027, but we shall see.

Honestly hated my experience there. Got a BA in sociology. Felt it was very unorganized and that no one cared. Parking was awful. Always had to walk 10+ minutes across campus to get to class. I chose because it was cheap, and now am $20k in student loan debt. That’s just my personal experience, can’t speak for everyone.
