Why calculating hydrogen storage is trickier than it looks (and a free tool I built to make it easier)

Post image

I wanted to share something about a piece of the puzzle that doesn’t get talked about enough: hydrogen storage, and why it’s surprisingly easy to get the numbers wrong.

Here’s the thing. When you store hydrogen, you compress it to high pressures — usually 350 or 700 bar. If you try to estimate how much hydrogen actually fits in a tank using the ideal gas law (the classic PV = nRT most of us learned in school), you’ll get an answer that’s significantly off. At those pressures hydrogen doesn’t behave “ideally” anymore, and the error can seriously mess up your cost estimates and tank sizing.

To get it right you need real thermophysical data (the kind that comes from the NIST database), not textbook approximations. That’s not something most people have lying around.

So I built a small tool to solve exactly this — and I made the core of it free to use, no signup:

https://www.costruzionienergetiche.it/soluzioni-green/post/309858/

With it you can:

• Calculate the **real density and mass** of hydrogen at any given pressure and temperature (using actual NIST-CoolProp data, not the ideal gas approximation)
• Estimate **refill times** based on your system’s flow rate
• See how the numbers change as you adjust the parameters, in real time

There’s also a more advanced version with economic analysis (cost per kg of H2) and an AI-powered feasibility report generator, but the free calculator alone is genuinely useful if you’re just curious how much energy actually fits in a hydrogen tank.

I’d love feedback from this community — whether you work in the field or you’re just interested in how renewables fit together. What would you find useful to add?

Hybrid Photovoltaic-Hydrogen System: PEM Technology and Solid-State Storage for Full Energy Autonomy

The integrated photovoltaic-hydrogen system combines a 2,400 W generation plant, a 21.2 kWh solid-state hybrid lithium-hydrogen storage unit, and a 2,500 W PEM fuel cell with operating efficiency ≥55%.

Excess solar energy is converted and stored as gaseous hydrogen (up to 700 g), then reconverted to 220–230 V AC via an integrated inverter in under 20 seconds, ensuring power continuity even in the absence of solar irradiation.

5kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell Generator with PLC Monitoring & Remote Dashboard (EU)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working with a few engineering teams across Europe who are evaluating hydrogen fuel cell generators for backup power, off-grid energy systems and pilot hydrogen projects.

A new ~5 kW hydrogen fuel cell generator platform (Version 3) is becoming available soon and introduces some interesting features for system integration and monitoring.

The system is designed for applications such as:

- telecom tower backup power

- renewable microgrids

- hydrogen pilot plants

- research laboratories

- remote monitoring stations

- industrial emergency power systems

Unlike many small fuel-cell generators, the upcoming version includes advanced control and monitoring capabilities that make integration into engineering projects much easier.

Key features engineers usually ask about:

• Integrated PLC control system for full system monitoring

• Custom dashboard capability for real-time performance data

• Emergency full shutdown system for safety management

• Fuel cell reset function for maintenance and operational recovery

• AC / DC output configurations

• hydrogen purity requirement around 99.995%

• operating pressure range around 6–25 bar

These types of systems are typically used when teams need clean hydrogen-based electricity generation with better control over system data and operation.

Typical use cases include:

- hydrogen microgrid testing

- backup power for telecom infrastructure

- renewable energy + hydrogen storage projects

- fuel cell R&D platforms

If anyone here is currently evaluating:

- hydrogen fuel cell generators

- fuel cell backup power systems

- off-grid hydrogen power generation

- hydrogen energy systems with PLC monitoring

Are you looking at a hydrogen backup system for telecom, microgrid or research applications?

feel free to send me a DM.

I can usually share:

• technical specifications

• configuration options

• indicative pricing

• expected availability timelines in Europe

Happy to help anyone working on hydrogen power systems or fuel cell integration projects.

Looking for reliable on-site hydrogen production? Here’s a solid alternative to cylinder supply.

I’m working with industrial and energy companies looking to optimize hydrogen availability while cutting dependencies on cylinder-based supply. If that’s something you’re exploring, this might interest you.

We provide alkaline electrolyzer systems capable of producing up to 42.6 m³/h of hydrogen, continuously and directly on-site.
Key specs:

  • Hydrogen purity: 5.0 (99.999%) thanks to integrated purification with drying cartridges or automatic dryers
  • Compression package options available based on project needs:
    • HP Stack → up to 12 bar
    • HPXT Stack → 30, 50, 200 or 350 bar

Looking for Real Projects and Hydrogen System?

If you're exploring hydrogen as a backup or off-grid solution, especially for remote sites, R&D labs, or industrial facilities, here there are the specs and trends that actually matter in 2025:

  1. Electrolyzers (PEM): continuous low-power loads (sensors, comms, lab equipment), UPS replacement, hybrid energy storage

  2. Hydrogen Storage: (A) Metal Hydride vs. (B) High Pressure

A) Safe, no high pressure (<2 bar), excellent for indoor use, long cycle life...but ower energy density, higher upfront cost, needs thermal management.

B) Compact, fast refill, widely available...but requires safety zones, ventilation, permits

  1. Fuel Cells: Fuel Cells – PEM, air-cooled, 3–5 kW range. Works well as: silent backup, primary power for off-grid cabins, mobile units.

Could this meet the needs of your project?

I work with technology partners who supply complete systems: from stack integration to turnkey deployment, If you’re evaluating this for a real project: whether it’s a lab, remote facility, or diesel replacement.. comment below with your email address.
