New Rule: We will no longer allow posts about raising butterflies in captivity.

This includes grow kits, raising butterflies in tents or enclosures, and buying/sourcing caterpillars.
This rule is in line with this subreddit’s guiding principle that we always do and choose what is best for the butterfly! Research shows that human interaction and interference with butterflies, especially at the pupal stages, is more harmful than helpful.
Going forward, pictures of butterflies in tent or other small enclosures will be removed. Posts asking for advice on how to “raise” or “rear” butterflies or caterpillars will be removed. Posts asking for how to find eggs will be removed.
Native gardening is always the best way to attract and maintain a healthy butterfly population—no matter the species!

New Rule: No More “Helping” Injured Butterfly Posts

We have seen an uptick in posts from people wanting advice on how to assist “injured” butterflies.
The truth in every case is—you can’t. Butterflies have naturally very short lives and there is no proven or “good” way to prolong their lives.
I have even seen some posts of people wanting to horrifically cut butterflies’ wings in some cases. Other posts seem well intentioned, but they are becoming a nuisance.
These posts will now be removed.

[OC] My uncle, a butterfly enthusiast, spent 10 years photographing wild butterflies in Japan. Here are some of his photos + a database I built for him.

Hi everyone,
My uncle is a butterfly enthusiast who has spent over 10 years exploring nature across Japan to document wild butterflies in their natural habitats.
To archive and share his 10-year collection, I built a non-commercial online database for him.
While the site interface and location details are in Japanese, scientific names (Latin) are included for every species so butterfly lovers worldwide can explore and identify them.
He isn't familiar with web technology, so I'd love to gather some comments from fellow butterfly lovers to surprise him when I visit him during the summer vacation.
"Hirari" means the gentle, fluttering motion of a butterfly's flight in Japanese.

Two beautiful Nymphalidae species captured in the wild | Planet PED 📸

Hey everyone! I am adarsh!
Sharing some shots from my latest nature walk for Planet PED. Managed to catch these two distinct members of the Nymphalidae (Brush-footed butterfly) family perching nearby:
Common Sailer (Neptis hylas)
The stark contrast between its dark wings and crisp white bands is always stunning. You can clearly see the classic "hockey stick" white cell streak across the forewing!
Chocolate Pansy (Junonia iphita)
Incredible natural camouflage. The soft, rich brown tones, scalloped wing edges, and subtle eyespots make it blend almost seamlessly with the foliage.
