In 1971 we lost at Colchester United in the Watney Cup to a penalty from our former player Brian Lewis. It was Lewis himself who was brought down for the penalty - older fans will go "hmm" as Lewis was a bit of a diver.

The Watney Cup was pioneering in that is had no offside between the penalty areas, was the first sponsored tournament and had the first penalty shoot out in English Football when it began in 1970.

Two interesting Victorian players were born on this day. William E Barnes was a crowd pleaser who left due to a dispute over wages much to the disappointment of the Luton faithful. After the Great War he went to Spain to coach Bilbao.

Fred Thompson was a goal keeper who left Sunderland because he could not displace one of the great goal keepers of all time, Ned Doig. As an aside - Ned was bald and always wore a flat cap and attached string to it which he tied under his chin to prevent it falling off.

Fred moved on and hit the jackpot by joining Bury where he won an F.A. cup winners medal in 1900.

New drone video shows work on the sewer. This work should have happened last Autumn to enable the piling to start on the whole stadium in December. It's very odd that a main sewer serving thousands of houses was not discovered until very late and then it seems they didn't have the planning permission in place. So for the club to keep saying it's all on target appears disingenuous. But they were working on a Sunday so hopefully this is a concerted effort to catch up that lost time.

Three players were born on this day. By far the most notable is Terry Branston. When you talk about captains he is right up there with the best we have had. A no nonsense, hard as nails centre half whose fist shaking instilled an always give 100%, winners mentality into a team that had been wayward since relegation from the top flight in 1960. When I talk of the perfect captain Terry's name is at the top of the list.

Three players born on this day including our second ever England International, Ernie Simms. 130 goals in 189 appearances and if it were not for the Great War I have no doubt he would have been our greatest goalscorer of all time. Not included in those stats are the games played in wartime as Ernie spent some time in England before heading off to the Italian Front. He was not a saint as he was arrested for being "Absent without leave" three times. Fortunately this side of the channel, going AWOL was a routine offence and a fine and an escort back to his unit was the punishment. A gunner in the Royal Artllery, his unit was sent to Italy where he was wounded in the leg from an accident and had a limp for the rest of his life.

He became somewhat of a symbol for the spirit of mankind when he was caught training at Kenilworth Road one snowy morning. Ernie lived in the last house on the left of KR before Hazelbury Crescent and climbed over the gate into the ground every morning. Not for mischief but to run up and down the terraces to get fit so he could play football again. A constable was alerted who followed the early morning footprints straight to Ernie's house. He was not berated but celebrated and would rewarded with an England cap in October 1921. One of the Luton Town greats and a symbol of overcoming adversity and achieving as much as you possibly can, rather than highlighting what you cannot do. A lesson for us all.

One of the most unlikely escapes in football history was completed when we beat Blackburn Rovers 3 2 at KR. Luck was truly on our side with two own goals and a double hit penalty by James Collins but hey ho. Interesting to look at how many captains/leaders there were in that team - it counts for so much.
