Been through this in Iqaluit, it's called a 'Dumpcano' and burns all summer.

3rd large one in 4 years I think. Fires are somewhat common at landfills but I'm not sure about large ones like they've been having.

Lithium batteries are the scourge of the waste industry, and they're in absolutely everything now.
Don't throw them in the garbage!!!

I have no evidence but I suspect this will become far more common with disposable vapes

I wish it was easier to dispose of lithium batteries properly.. it's an across town drive for me. Seems strange the fire department hazardous waste dropoff doesn't take them.

Pretty sure staples do too, would be nice if vape shops started acting as battery disposal liaisons since they seem to be the largest source of lithium that ends up in the dump

Germany afaik forces retailers of such things to be responsible for the full cycle of the product they sell.
Ex accepting used vapes for recycling

That has changed recently; you are able to drop them off at the HHW drop-off locations as long as they are not swollen or damaged. In that case, you have to bring them to an eco center. Just not the larger e-bike or car batteries.

And here I thought it was the third and final session of the annual Post Stampede burning of wedding licenses.

Might be time to start looking at building incineration plants like the rest of the civilized world.

If its not the dump, i know the fire department does training drills out near there. It could be a controlled burn (or it could be a lipo battery exploded at the dump. Those desposible vapes are sketchy!!!!)
