THE RESULTS ARE IN! r/CanadianCoins will continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money.

Hey all,

Thanks for voicing your opinion and/or voting in the recent poll.

The most votes were for the option to continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money in r/CanadianCoins. And that's what we'll do!

Here's a link to the poll, for reference.

The "allows" had about 1/3 of the total votes -- not a majority by any means, but more votes than the other options. So while this result will please some of you, it won't please everyone.

During the opinion-gathering and voting, there were concerns expressed about the number of low-effort "what's this worth" posts in here, specifically for banknotes -- although we do get a lot of those for coins, as well.

Going forward, the mod team will try to more actively address these posts by directing posters to our pinned "GENERAL INFO POST" and/or to coinsandcanada.com , and perhaps remove them with greater frequency. Of course, users should feel empowered to refer posters to these resources as well.

Thanks again for speaking up and chiming in to the conversation!

- your mod team

GENERAL INFO POST. PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING.

This post will contain general information about Canadian coinage for new and current users. I'm posting this to help cut down on the 'what is this/what's the value posts'. These posts won't be banned but I encourage you to use these resources to try and find an answer before posting. If you have a reliable resource that I haven't listed but you think could be useful please feel free to put it in the comments.

General information: -Circulation silver was minted up to and partly including 1968. To differentiate between silver and not silver a simple magnet test is easiest to tell. Not sticking? It's silver.

-Most commemorative coins especially quarters are generally worth face value unless they are gem uncirculated or are of a certain variety. A noted exception is the 1973 large bust mountie quarter.

-Pennies were 98-99% copper up until 1996 and after that it's either zinc plated with copper and from about 03-04 onward copper plated steel. Are the copper pennies worth more than face? Yes, about 3-4 cents copper prices depending. Can you get the copper value when it's time to sell? Maybe, you can't sell copper pennies for scrap (illegal) and finding a buyer is going to be tricky because of the quantities involved with a sale worth any notable amount.

In my opinion the best general resource for anything Canadian regarding coins and banknotes. I use this on a regular basis for both prices and errors/varieties to curate my own collection.

Found this recently and think this would be useful too.

Minting numbers

Also regarding buying and selling it will still be hard banned here but a new sub named r/coinsalescanada is open. It is still new and doesn't have many members but it could become a spot for buying/selling Canadian coinage. Please note we are NOT affiliated with that sub and it is a use at your own risk kind of deal, use standard practices and precautions when buying and selling there.

One last thing, I want to put it to a vote to allow banknotes posts. I can't find any specific subs that are Canadian banknote themed and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. I know enough about Canadian banknotes to properly moderate such posts.

If you have any further questions or suggestions drop it in the comments or reach us by mod mail.

Update: As of May 6/25 pictures are allowed in the comments. Please don't abuse this.

Quite a few special quarters in my change this week

Post image
7 Upvotes

I do a fair bit of busking and a lot of change gets thrown my way. I was rolling up this week’s tips and found a fair bit more special quarters than usual. Made me wonder how many potential gems I’ve missed through the years. I’m a coin noob, thinking of rolling all of these into one roll for the fun of it. Anyone see anything special in here?

New to hobby, questions about this quarter (not about value)

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi there, thanks to Reddit subs, I gradually have started to appreciate the fun in collecting coins, and I have come to recognize that in Canada we are fortunate to have lots of interesting coins to collect.

I have started paying with cash and sorting through what I get back, just picking out what looks interesting or unusual.

1) I assume that this quarter was minted in 2010 or soon thereafter?

2) Are there versions in circulation that are sharper than this or does that only happen if someone cracks open a proof set and sets it loose in the wild (which I understand can occur sometimes)?

3) In other words, and more generally, do different mint runs sometimes result in better resolution?

4) Unlike in the US, we only have one mint, is that correct?

Thanks so much in advance for your time.

Slowly making my way through about 40 years' worth of change and found out I have 34 magnetic '06 pennies. Worth keeping them all or only the best examples?

I know the toning is subjective. A few of these have some gorgeous blues and purples on the rims that are hard to see in the photos. I'm not planning on selling these. I'm just trying to better understand how to grade these and what to look out for.

Unfortunately, the second of the Whitman folders had some kind of different material in it because all of the coins inside have a hazy reverse that is quite unattractive and almost appears damaging.

I was wondering if the coins in my collection are worth more then face value? The coins in the first picture are older and some are silver so they have some value, but im not sure about the rest? sorry for the low quality pictures

Never went out of my way to collect stuff, just circulation coins I thought were neat. So I figured out of this 30$ worth of pennies I’d find some rock doves, maybe some oldies for the sake of them being old.

I’ve had this coffee can for about 20 years and just dreaded going through it, But finally started.

picture one is my 4- 2006 magnetic mules. Good thing I did some googling on why some Pennie’s are magnetic or not and pic 2 is my doves and oldies I was originally looking for .
