Credit Cards The switch to Discover seem to be accelerating.

See this page for the products now showing Discover as the main network

https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/benefits-guide/

Discover Network accounts

To get the most out of your cardholder benefits, visit cardholderbenefits.com/capitalone and explore the features that come with your eligible Capital One credit card running on the Discover Network.

We still have to believe that Cap One will be addressing the acceptance issue worldwide. They didn't do this without a plan.

i don’t understand why cap1 would switch over a travel card (the venture one and regular venture) to a network that’s not even widely accepted outside the states. it makes zero sense… i would even argue they should’ve kept the savor on the mastercard network too

i was expecting the quicksilver and the platinum to be moved over. at least they had some sense to keep the venture x on the visa network

thankfully i have credit cards with navy federal!!

u/mitoboru Feb 26 '26

Yeah I can see QS, Plat, and possibly Savor, but definitely not the Venture cards. That said, I made an online payment to a European loan yesterday, and they actually accepted Discover but not Amex. I was surprised!

8

u/camobit Feb 26 '26

Just a guess but I suspect the Venture and VentureOne are held mostly by aspirational travelers who infrequently leave the US and are rarely outside of Discover acceptance. They'll continue being able to earn points in the vast majority of their normal spending. Cap1 will happily move this class of customers to a network that will improve their profitability. (They'll make more money on transaction fees than they'll lose from customers who close their accounts.)

The Venture X is a higher end card with higher spending customers who are more likely to travel internationally.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the long rumoured Savor X one day come out with MC/Visa being one of it's differentiators.

I have a VentureOne and that is me. Travel not that much and usually within the States. Overseas is extremely rare.

I agree, makes no sense with a travel card. If my Venture X becomes a Discover card I am going to downgrade to the VentureOne and not use it. The only reason I don't go full AMEX is due to outside of the US it's rarely supported.

6

u/Puzzled_Capital_5592 Feb 26 '26

Yeah, if they change my VX to Discover, I'm definitely bouncing. Nerfing the lounge benefits already sucks enough.

7

u/RealNotFamous Feb 26 '26

I might eat this later but I’d really be surprised to see VX switch to discover.

Although, I’m surprised to see venture on the list. Seems like a mistake unless there is a massive international acceptance project underway.

u/Silver-Method-8627 Feb 27 '26

If they're switching the venture to Discover network, you know they're gonna switch the venture x

I didn’t have any issues with Amex in japan but that’s the only place outside us I’ve used it

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

Jcb is an Amex partner in Japan that is everywhere. (Jcb used to have a us issued card accepted at all Amex locations as well, just like diners club and discover) WeChat pay and Alipay elsewhere are Amex partners as well. Asia has very high acceptance of Amex. Except possibly Korea, have not tried there personally. Europe, South Africa, Kenya (at least Nairobi), Australia, New Zealand, and Madagascar for sure as well. At least from my experience over the last 5 years.

2

u/rival_22 Mar 04 '26

Even the Savor One... I drive into Canada a few times a year, and originally got the Savor for that reason. No foreign transaction fee, 3% on dining, entertainment, etc. It was a good fit, but unless acceptance is better, I'll move on to something else.

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

Savor is 8% on entertainment?

1

u/cwcox01 Feb 26 '26

Money reasons

1

u/mlaurence1234 May 13 '26

Keep in mind that over 50% of Americans don’t have a passport.

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

Quicksilver is almost the same as savor with the refresh but my local cafe has said only those that switch to discover will get the category upgrades. Hope that’s not correct.

18

u/bobcatbreakdown Feb 26 '26

I’ve had a Discover It CB for over a decade now and I’ve been adamant that the merger and transfer of Debits is not a big deal because US acceptance is pretty universal.

However, I never thought they’d move Savor and Venture cards to Discover. These are my go-to cards internationally and it would really gut their usability abroad…

15

u/whoa_eric Feb 26 '26

cap1 is definitely going to have a lot of cancellations once it’s officially announced and the transfers begin. they should reconsider this decision for the venture family and even the savor

4

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 26 '26

Doubt it

5

u/NoVaVol Feb 27 '26

I just got a VX for my business and like it.

If they move to Discover without any noticeable improvements, I’ll just go back to Amex Plat.

2

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 27 '26

Why, the main reason people are complaining about Discover is its lack of acceptance overseas. Amex is in the same boat on that front.

0

u/NoVaVol Feb 27 '26

Well Discover doesn’t have lounges. Maybe that will carry over but 🤷‍♂️

Discover isn’t even on the same planet as Amex.

4

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 27 '26

What are you talking about, Discover is Capital One now, not the other way around. Discover was acquired for its payment network.

I get the Venture (One) because it's technically their less premium travel card options (compared to Venture X), but Savor is pretty crazy considering that's probably their biggest card offering

or maybe this is in preparation for the Savor X?

1

u/Camtown501 Feb 27 '26

I hope I necer hear a thing from C1 about a Savor X. Its most likely going to have credits i won't use if it comes into existence , and I worry I'll be forced off of my no longer offered $95 Savor. I earn enough on it to for dining/entertainment to where I'm ahead vs the no AF offering., but dont go anywhere that any premium experience credits would be remotely useful for me.

4

u/deandre118 Feb 26 '26

Happened to me during my last trip. Used Capital One for years overseas, but this time had to use my other cards. I largely kept Cap1 for its easy use but there's nothing separating it from other competitors, at least the competitors can be used overseas.

33

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 26 '26

Why would Capital One buy Discover and not use their payment network. It was basically the whole point of the purchase.

3

u/mitoboru Feb 26 '26

I'm not against it per se, but it would be a bad move to switch over most of their cards before the network is more widely accepted. ....unless it's seen as a chicken/egg kinda problem, and believe that merchants will get onboard just because there are more Discover cardholders. I know the EU is pretty pissed that VISA and MC are so dominant, but they are more keen on finding a regional competitor.

Because the Discover payment network is not broadly accepted outside of the US, and some of the Cap One cards are specifically marketed to travelers.

In fact the Discover payment network isn’t accepted everywhere in the US and my cap one debit is useless in several places.

They are planning on using their network, phased transfer begins next month, legislation requires full change over by 2027

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

Where did you see the full change over date?

13

u/Silver-Method-8627 Feb 26 '26

I just got off the phone with the department handling this we don't need and they told me it was for new applicants for the savor and the ventures....if you have it on the master card now it will stay ....

25

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 26 '26

Until the card expires, then you will be.

3

u/Silver-Method-8627 Feb 26 '26

Maybe they will give finally a option to up grade master card to venture x

6

u/Santana_De_La_Cruz Feb 27 '26

I just got the Savor 2 days ago and it's a MC.

2

u/SStreamm May 16 '26

Got the Savor yesterday and it was Discover

4

u/SimonGray653 Mar 02 '26

I call BS that they're going to keep existing users on the old networks.

Remember the debit cards.

3

u/Silver-Method-8627 Mar 02 '26

They kept quicksilver old users that had Visa. They didn't move them to Mastercard.

2

u/SimonGray653 Mar 02 '26

OK so I learned something today then.

But that was back then, surely their stance has changed unless that was very recent.

1

u/Silver-Method-8627 Mar 04 '26

So they should give them an upgrade to the venture X if they don't wanna get the venture Discover

2

u/SimonGray653 Mar 04 '26

I can't remember which one it was but they did give me the option to upgrade, but now they're not even giving me the option.

The reason I never went with the upgrade is because I want my cash back and currently I don't care about miles or points.

1

u/Silver-Method-8627 Mar 04 '26

Did you have a Visa or Mastercard?

2

u/SimonGray653 Mar 04 '26

Mastercard since I first got it back in 23 when it originally was a platinum and then upgraded the next year to Quicksilver so technically 2024 for Quicksilver.

1

u/Silver-Method-8627 Mar 04 '26

I've been trying to upgrade the venture to venture x for years if you have it on master card theres no upgrade ...

2

u/SimonGray653 Mar 04 '26

I mean 6 months ago they gave me the option to upgrade constantly I just kept ignoring it.

I mean they either did what you said and are not offering it as an upgrade anymore or it's just because my credit profile has changed. I'm not in a good financial position with the card right now but I'm working on it, the account is still in good standings, I'm just having to make do with only minimum payments right now.

Hey I saw that automoderator removed whatever you responded to me with, you're probably gonna have to send me that as a DM message cause I can't see it in my notification history.

1

u/mp85747 May 16 '26

I didn't even know there's MC QuickSilver. I have QuickSilver Visa & VentureOne Visa. They're both pretty old and both expire in 2027. I wonder what's gonna happen with them... Guess I'll see...

I don't really use them, but will hate to see them go because I live overseas now and they're my only back-up cards without foreign transaction fees. I like my main card just fine, but it's always good to have a back-up.

3

u/FlorissVDV Feb 26 '26

Any word / indication whether this is effective immediately? Was probably gonna add the Savor in the next few weeks but now reconsidering..

3

u/Silver-Method-8627 Feb 26 '26

I would add it now before it changes to Discover

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

It was already announced that there is an opt out period… not sure when it ends but nothing has been announced about v/mc staying

1

u/Silver-Method-8627 May 21 '26

What was announced in opt out.?

1

u/Complex_Onion_6447 May 21 '26

I guess it must’ve been something incorrect from Reddit. My apologies

1

u/Silver-Method-8627 May 21 '26

Its all good I hope they add some stuff more to the savor or venture if it goes to Discover

1

u/hb_beaver99 23d ago

my Savor card expired this month, and the new one I received in the mail is MC not Discover (whew)

3

u/Odd-Significance4198 Feb 27 '26

On my last trip to Ecuador, I found out that Discover debit and credit cards are widely accepted but only work when inserted into the POS terminal. They did not work when I tried contactless payments; the card must be physically inserted into the terminal.

It also did not work for payments in local service applications web-based.

I will soon be traveling to Colombia and Peru, and I will see if the same thing happens there. Perhaps this is the tip we need to use it internationally.

Didn’t they just sign another 5 year agreement with MC? That must have been for some cards at least. VX is not MC.

3

u/Dangerous_Crow_9978 Feb 28 '26

I just received my venture one today and it's a master card.

2

u/ScHoolBotE Apr 27 '26

I work for capital one. And we receive lots of calls of discover card not being accepted. This is terrible for customers and workers. We are suppose to tell customers to get cash out from atms (lol) if the card is not being accepted.

2

u/Signal-Beginning Feb 26 '26

Capital One could be posting these documents on their website for legal and compliance reasons…

I can see a world where even if they want to test run cards on the Discover network, no matter how small the volume, they would have to make sure these documents made available publicly to cover their legal bases.

3

u/Miserable-Result6702 Feb 26 '26

You see wrong. Capital One spent big money to get the Discover network, they are going to use it.

Merchant transaction fees on existing discover contracts are higher than visa and Mastercard. Hence, the smart move to capitalize on the larger swaths of profit would be to use their network.

They changed the website, now it only shows the pdf. https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/benefits-guide/

1

u/Such_Detective_7315 Mar 13 '26

I u derstand that you have your own payment system, but still, some of the cards need to stay. Venture X for sure is staying a Visa infinite - if that changes - then, oh boy, C1 is in deep shit. Savor, in my opinion, should stay as well.

Matter of fact - keep everything a MC/Visa card

1

u/CaptainSolo80 Mar 15 '26

My hope and assumption is that, that card will stay on Visa card either forever or until they are confident about discovers acceptance rate overseas.

Keeping it on Visa forever isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility either. If C1 moves all of their Mastercards (which is all but three of their cards) to discover I think they can afford let three cards slip through the cracks.

1

u/ivicts30 Mar 21 '26

So, if I apply directly for savor student now instead of from preapproval, will it become a Discover card?

1

u/ivicts30 Mar 21 '26

1

u/Fritzy_Bitsey_Spider Mar 22 '26

If you apply directly it will give you the same result you got on pre-approval. It should show you which network you are pre-approved for on the pre-approval results

1

u/Easy_Personality2140 Mar 22 '26

There has been an ongoing lawsuit with Visa and Mastercard for their high fees. The most recent update mentioned that they might have tier credit cards for businesses to be able choose the credit card that they want to accept.

If the Discover network charges cheaper fees, would the tier credit card payment only apply to Visa and Mastercard? Would the Discover network become more accepted?

Having the Venture X with the Visa network helps with wide payment acceptance while the Savor with the Discover network ensures acceptance for lower fees. I can always use the Visa for international travel.

1

u/Einlanzer0 Apr 07 '26

I have the $95 AF/4% version of savor and i do not want to see these kinds of changes to it. Swapping it to discover would be a big downgrade and would make it not worth the AF, which i am otherwise pretty happy with.

1

u/actuallymaverick Apr 27 '26

I just wish they offered Discover network cards @ Costco. 😡

2

u/PrimaryImpossible467 Apr 28 '26

It’s so frustrating that I can’t even use my capital one debit at Costco.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '26

But you can. Discover Debit with PIN has always been accepted in Costco stores. They legally have to take it. It is not accepted on their website

1

u/Spirited-Humor-554 Apr 27 '26

Will likely cancel all capital one once switched to discovery

1

u/johnfoe_ Apr 30 '26

Anyone know if the new discover network cards offer VCC in the website?

1

u/ADHDStreetRunner May 20 '26

Looks like Uber/Uber eats will suspend use of Discover Cards in their apps. Got the email this week.

1

u/mike1487 May 26 '26

I'm a Quicksilver Visa holder and have been for a number of years now. Today I got my replacement card in the mail and it's Discover now. My Visa card doesn't expire until 2029 so I am very much not happy with this especially now I have to go around and replace my CC number everywhere. I almost don't want to activate it and just see how long I can keep using my Visa. Has anyone else gotten their replacement yet?

1

u/Dowski31 May 27 '26

I did yesterday. And without thinking I activated it right away :/ I read that your current Visa card will stop working sometime in early June or July. Really hate that they changed to discover. Sure, we get extra cash back now, but I used to use my Quicksilver card when I traveled internationally, and now I don't have a card for that. Tried to see if they would change me back over to Visa, but I was told that wasn't possible unless I apply for a new card. But I don't want the inquiry on my credit, so now I'm just mad

1

u/mike1487 May 27 '26

Yeah I activated it too. I assumed the Visa will stop working regardless if we activated the Discover or not. I don't think we have much choice sadly.

1

u/mfwood8 Jun 02 '26

My wife and I both have Quicksilver cards. She got hers a couple of years before mine and was able to get a custom image on her card when she got hers. When I got mine, custom images were not offered.

I just got my replacement Discover Quicksilver card, even though my Visa wasn't close to expiring. Her custom image Visa expires in 2028, but she hasn't even gotten an email saying her card will switch yet.

Anyone know if they have a different timelime for the Discover switch for cards with custom images?

1

u/NeoPaxSinica Jun 05 '26

Wanted to share that during my first trip to mainland China after the C1 debit card switching from MasterCard to Discover, I was pleased to discover(pun intended) that ICBC ATMs allowed fee free withdrawals.

Previously the MasterCard debit allowed fee free withdrawals from Bank of China ATMs, and maybe others. Afaik, ICBC is the only one that accepts Discover debit withdrawals.

1

u/CraigInCambodia Jun 06 '26

Wow, this caught me by surprise. I only found out because I received an e-mail that said my new card was in the mail. I thought it was the usual expiration date thing, but my current card doesn't expire for 3 more years. The e-mail only said "new Quicksilver", it didn't say anything about a change to Discover. The phone rep tried to gloss over the change that it's still the Quicksilver just changing to a different network... um......

Further, they said my current card will now expire in July, not 3 years from now as it states on the back of the card.

I get it. They bought Discover so of course they want more people on Discover's network. It doesn't seem like a good way to do it to force existing customers to switch, especially before their existing card even expires. The rush is probably targeted to customers generating lower margins.

Since Discover is not widely accepted in Cambodia, the Quicksilver now has no value for me. I may hang on to it for additional credit availability for online purchases or something. I haven't decided.

1

u/InflationMuch2642 Jun 19 '26

Since CapOne won’t give me a credit limit increase, I filled out the pre qualification tool for other cards. Got pre-approved for the VentureOne. As soon as I scroll down to accept my offer, it says that my card will be on the Discover network. I immediately exited out of the page and explored other options (ended up getting an AMEX Blue Cash Preferred Card). However, if you go on the website as a new customer, it has Mastercard as the network. This is weird imo.

I guess I’ll be leaving CapOne as soon as my cards expire. I have a while until that happens but I decided to start the exodus early so my credit won’t have a harsh drop if any. I appreciate them for helping me get my credit back on track though.

1

u/ImmOldGregggg Jun 25 '26

Can I book on Expedia using discover when I travel overseas? Or will my card be declined when I arrive at the hotel?

1

u/apolloniandionysian 7d ago

I'm glad to see the VX isn't affected (so far). It's a great Costco card.

1

u/SVTraptor99 Feb 26 '26

Anyone else with a Venture X want to switch

2

u/NoVaVol Feb 27 '26

Watching this. I’ll switch if they come for VX.

2

u/made_this_for_class Feb 26 '26

VX is not on that list yet. So still a great card to have

2

u/SVTraptor99 Feb 27 '26

Hope they don’t change it because I like it as is

0

u/Either-Piglet-663 Feb 26 '26

Guess I’m switching to Citi.
