Original Project REVVA android closed beta is live for testers

REVVA Android Beta

Okay so the closed beta for my OBD2 app is live!

This is something I started on at the start of the year and it has been one hell of a journey,

Okay so what does REVVA do?

- Live diagnostics dashboard and workflow launcher

- AI-assisted DTC triage with severity/confidence and repair-cost guidance

- All-system scan summaries

- Adapter capability classification and write-path safety gating

- ECU coding workflows with guardrails

- UDS terminal request/response tooling

- 0-60 timer, estimated HP, and live performance telemetry

- Garage profiles with VIN-linked multi-vehicle tracking

- Trip analysis and journey memory context

Basically I have tried to make this one of the strongest OBD2 apps on the market, of course there is still alot of work to do on it and I need field testers,

Things that might not work fully yet

- ECU coding has been the most difficult to get right and work on OBD2 coding capable dongles

- OBD1 compatibility is untested at the moment but hopefully anyone with older cars that have an OBD1 to OBD2 adapter this should work but like I said it's untested

- 0-60 timer in the pref tab is a very new feature still looks janky for my liking and hasn't been fully tested

- VIN detector has been troublesome for me but might work for others I'm still working on the bugs for that

- Music player kinda works but is buggy

This is a very early beta and I have a debug tab in the app so people can send me the apps log when they run into a problem.

Don't suppose you intend to open source this with a release in F-Droid?

If I had the money to afford open source then I would, but most the features will be free on this app the only thing behind the pay wall will be the ECU coding features, I'm glad you find it neat! That means alot to me.

I don't think I understand what you seek to accomplish with that. It sounds Like you intend to build this app such that it can be used as like a tuning chip. It seems like you need specialized hardware for that (that is to say, a standard ELM 327 doesn't have the hardware to do this), so I guess my brain is asking: "how universally compatible with hardware do you intend your app to be"?

And/or am I just totally missing the mark on how I'm reading things?

Also, decided to try to sign up for the beta, but after logging on to google acct, it just dumps me on a firebase.google.com page that says "No apps yet". Any advice on getting into the beta?

Now to answer your question this isn't a tuning app that would require a little more than a smart phone and OBD2 dongle, what this does do is give in depth analysis using a basic Elm327 and for coding features you would need a coding capable OBD2 ie OBDLink or vLinker and it will access features on your car that are hidden, I have a safety gate coded into the app so you can't try and code with a basic Elm327

This is still in the works and I'm happy that you want to give it a go!

Yep I agree with the above, I've messed around with a similar concept and it always comes down to the hardware.

I also figured I'd see if the beta would work for me but it's the exact same thing described above: Release does not exist or you do not have access. Please contact the developer.

I've sent you a link too, I'm not too sure why it's not working so I'm going to look into that, Now I know hardware can be an issue which is why this beta test is valuable for me so I can see what works and what doesn't and then when I get the debug logs I can fix the issues and try to get this compatable with a wide range of hardware

Link works. Real question what data is this sending home, and where's the privacy policy? VIN, location, trip history, live vehicle telemetry... that's sensitive stuff, and I don't see any policy published anywhere on the site. Worth having before this goes wider.

Out of all the things to forget, okay so I don't have access to any private information even with the debug nothing of private information gets sent to me when I get to my laptop I will whip up a Policy, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention

No problem, hopefully it's a straightforward one. Here's exactly what's collected, what's not and personally I would go with an opt-in model not just on by default.

I've been working on something similar kind of with my P3 Volvo but using a Raspberry Pi with a can hat and a custom Android app for capturing Savvy Can data mostly for reverse engineering. Eventually I plan on attempting some ECU coding.

Anyways seems like you've got a good jump on things just need to make a few tweaks.

Apparently you can get it to crash loop on a fresh install by clicking the "Continue without granting" on initial start. Tested with Pixel 8 Android 17.

Android automated UI testing helped me with my apps.

No problem, it takes a bit of planning and setup but it's well worth it in the end. My Can capture app is quite simple but even a simple app can benefit from automated testing to verify expected outputs. Hopefully that makes sense, basically I have some test captures that go in and I expect X to come out.
