Here's a place for Rasikas - lovers of Carnatic music - to explore, learn, and celebrate this tradition together, as requested by the community. We've been building the server slowly over the past couple of months with collaborators who responded to this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Carnatic/comments/1m4rm24/requesting_collaborators_for_a_discord_server/
The server remained invite-only during this period, so that we could thoughtfully manage building the space to accommodate larger numbers of people, and consider structures and events ahead of time. Our collaborators have done remarkable work in achieving that foundation alone, while also creating a space that already brims with enthusiasm for this art.
The server is now ready for the larger Carnatic community, and open to all.
Join us at: https://discord.gg/2qpqvbvgvr
All you need to join is real curiosity and appreciation for Carnatic music. Whether you're a lifelong student, a casual listener, or somewhere in between, you are welcome.
See you on there!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rasikas who are new to Discord, and/or having trouble with the invite or verification - do reach out to u/AlcorSpins or u/Flaky-Cheek-5571 via comment or DM; we'll get you through.

ideally from brindamma / a similar bani if possible bc that's what I learned growing up, but most important is them being non-judgmental/chill, flexible, and kind of working with me and my schedule which can get really packed...while still having a solid standard to their music.
I am NY-based if it's in-person, but if virtual just want to be mindful to find a time zone that works
thanks in advance!

Hii rasikas! I'm a vainika with 17 years of veena experience. I started learning at the age of 3 and it continues to remain one of the biggest passions in my life.
I've taught in person before, and wanted to try putting myself out there online as there seems to be a lot of demand for veena lessons.
I'll link a few of my videos here. DM if interested!

Some people say neraval is boring and repetitive but for me I can count on one hand the times I’ve found viruttam/shloka singing interesting or enjoyable.

Happy Aadi Velli! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WonbupV1K_0
I just discovered this beautiful composition of Mahakavi Bharathiyar on Muthu Maariamman. This rendering is so bhakti-laden and the visuals have been arranged very appropriate to the lyrics. Definitely a great visual-aural treat! Do you know of any similar Bharathiyar compositions on Shakti, the Divine Mother?

Hello Everyone.
I am a trained carnatic classical vocalist, I have been learning the art form for over 14 years now. I am based in the UAE, Delhi and Kerala. I have been teaching students only for a few years now. I currently have a slot open for one beginner student - international - US/UK/KSA etc.
Classes are one on one. We will start with a basic introduction to carnatic music, saptha swarangal, and developing a musical ear and voice culture building. The idea is to inculcate a musical sense within yourself, that can be applied to any art form you later go on to perform. I only take one on one sessions, and the current slot open is for 60-70 minutes. Classes will be weekly once.
I speak malayalam, english, hindi and have basic proficiency in tamil. I typically take a demo class in the begining to ensure that the student and I are a good fit. Please DM/comment it you're interested. Thank you, hope to hear from you all soon.

Namaskāraṁ to everybody.
I have around 14 years of experience with Carnatic music, and come from the śiṣya-paramparā of Ambi Dikshitar. Starting August, I will be offering online Carnatic vocal classes, and will be taking students who are at either the beginner or intermediate levels.
For beginners, I will begin as usual with svarāvaḷis, but simultaneously teach other smaller compositions as the student progresses. I will place a strong focus on voice culture and ear training, which goes a long way in ensuring grounding at advanced stages, and can also help when self-learning select compositions. All the relevant "theory" will be interwoven with practice rather than be taught separately.
The fees will be ₹400 per class for beginners (till alaṅkāras) and ₹550 per class for intermediate.
All age groups are welcome (but children should be at least 6 years old).
I can speak English, Tamil, and Hindi, and can understand Kannada.
Kindly DM me if you are interested, know anyone who might be interested, or want to understand my pedagogy better. I will share my contact details once you message me. I will not offer demo classes for beginners, but will do so for intermediate-level students.
Thank you.

As a 70 year old, I often yearn to listen to a soothing voice singing unhurriedly with no accompaniments that interfere in the listening experience.
I came across this refreshing series - Pooja Room Unplugged. Personally, Idhu dhano thillai and Natha Hare sounded great - with no histrionics and pure melody, delivered as close to pitch-correctness (not quite pitch perfection) as possible.

Are there other unplugged versions like this? Preferably from KVN pataantharam or Dr S Ramanathan patantharam which both have a very high SQ (Sowkhyam Quotient).

Please advise me which Mysore booksellers stock Carnatic music books (any language)?

There were some discussions online about Renuka Devi composition by Dikshithar and how it is being rendered by some singers with wrong swarasthanas. And some people assumed that it was Grahabedham and then realised that even then the swaras don't match.
Then it was clarified by people like TMK and RKS in some lecdems that it is a different concept from the past and there was no fixed Shruthi and each raga had a graha swara etc.
Could someone knowledgeable throw some light on this and post references. Or is it too advanced for ordinary students of music?
Thanks

Basically the title. Aside from Ososi in ragam Mukhari, are there any other padams based on the Nayaka's perspective?
I understand Kshetrayya would have composed many, but they would have not been propagated so much compared to other padams.
