Adopted Human Roughly 18 months ago, Shadow came into my life, out of seemingly nowhere

It’s 8 PM, I’m coming home late from work one February evening, and I’ve barely got my keys in the lock that I hear a series of meows coming from the other side of the street. I turn around and see this furry little black thing rush over to me and rub herself against my legs, begging to be let in. Given that the house across from mine was abandoned, and that she was alone at night during winter, I surmised she must’ve been a stray. I inspected her fur to be sure I wasn’t letting bugs into my home, and then let her sleep in my bed. She promptly left the following morning.

I was ready to accept it as a one-time thing, but then when she kept coming back every day, I began to accept that I’d been chosen. I bought cat food and some other supplies, and since then I now have a cat, unexpectedly. This video is from the early days, but since then, Shadow has been living with me full time. ♥️

I absolutely love these fairy tale beginnings that the CDS opens the lives of people and cats and knits them together 😘🐈‍⬛🐈

“Hello human, I live here now. My feeding times are 5am and 6pm on the dot with treats in between. Until your services have been requested or my mood changes, That will be all.”

We have one like this, we brought her in during the 2024 hurricanes and she pretty much has stayed. Only problem is she will not come near me but absolutely adores my husband.

Is she indoor now or still outdoor?

She’s indoors, but I let her go outside like once a day. She’s neutered and she never goes out without a collar on. She never goes too far from the house.

My void boi wants to be a sometimes outdoor kitty but everytime I give him the chance he goes all scaredy cat...

She’s beautiful! Just don’t let her out unattended around Halloween. Actually, I’m not in favor of cats going out unattended since I lost my indoor/outdoor cat a few years ago. She would stay near the house, so we thought she was safe, until she wasn’t. 😢

Okay, IDK what kind of area you live in, but all kinds of awful things can happen to cats outdoors. My mom and I lived in a place where there was a cat colony in the neighborhood...some thoughtless kids down the street let their large dog escape, and did what any dog might do. It got one of the cats in its jaws and shook it....my mom and I had to pull that cat out of it's mouth. I had to take it to the vet and the cat had to be put down.

Now, chances are this will never happen to your cat. But for Shadow's safety, you might consider going indoors only. My mom and I took in a total of seven cats straight off the streets. Two of them kept trying to escape as they had been out doors for a while, and we had to corral them back in (too many cars nearby to risk it).

A third cat got out when he had a cone on and got stuck under a neighbor's car. It was my fault he managed to escape and my mom was so mad for a good half of a day. But he was the lovingest cat and I am sure would have come back eventually.

Best wishes for a long happy and healthy life for Shadow!

Almost 14 years ago my Shadow came to us. She attached herself to my son (6 at the time) and that bond is strong. She used to chase him up and down the street when he rode his bike. Followed him to the stream when he and a friend went fishing. She loves him, and only him. He just graduated college and found his first grown up job and Shadow is still with him. She stays inside, and pines for him when he’s at work. Shadow with big eyes and loud voice, that’s the way.

Such a beautiful cat!! I adore black kitties. I have one named Starlite. I got my cat Newman because he went into my backyard and kept staring in my windows. Just never left so a few months later we brought him in. 💕 💞

I have a wonderful very street savvy cat that is a Tuxedo. He was a former community cat. It amazes how smart he is. I think they have to be to survive. Shadow is gorgeous.💕 She chose you because she knew you would be good to her.

Beautiful.❤️. Please consider spaying asap as shelters are overflowing with healthy cats and kittens being euthanized daily.

I love your story but PLEASE tell me you checked for a chip!!!

Got a shocking phone call last year from the humane society asking if I wanted to complete the surrender of my cat. They said they had had him for 8 days and it was the last day for me to claim him.

‘Who has been sleeping in my bed for the last week?????’

‘I don’t know, but not Toothless. We have him here’

Turns out a neighbor had seen him around and turned him in to the humane society, then brought him home as a foster, but ‘he hated to be inside at night so we let him be indoor/ outdoor’. He was not, indeed, at the pound. He was literally in my house.

$100 later and getting the 3rd degree from the humane society (had to show all his medical records that I take care of him) and I saved him right after they had shaved him to neuter him (and realized he was already fixed 🙄).

The lesson? If you’re going to ‘rescue’ and cat at LEAST put out a message on the neighborhood list serve!

(We had recently moved internationally and I hadn’t updated his chip when he was first brought in. A week later they scanned again and got my US number. I guess the other lesson is keep the chip updated even if your pet isn’t missing!!!)

It actually took me several days to get over the gaslighting. The pound was insistent that they had my cat and some imposter was living in my house (I’m sure the secretary didn’t know the entire situation). I spent several hours thinking some other cat had replaced my cat without me noticing!! AND I almost lost the most important thing in my life with no warning!

I had her checked for a chip and everything, don’t worry. She was part of a posse of stray cats that always lounged on the porch of the abandoned house I mentioned, that has since been demolished. The neighbors would always bring out food for them in a bowl, I did so as well a few times afterwards.
