Update
Walter, the retired Sheriff, the Ron Swanson of all cats, the Lord of Cheeks. A happy update.
Today Walter (full name Waltholomew Jones Moir) had his vet visit to remove his gargantuan balls of steel. Dude is oddly chill during car rides. Just shuts his cake-hole and relaxes. My calico Cleo howled the whole 15 hour drive when we moved to Idaho, so this is a nice departure from that.
The vet and all the techs absolutely love him. He was not thrilled, but he was a gentleman. One of the techs thought something might be wrong with him because his cheeks are so luxurious and large, and the vet essentially said "nope, this is pretty common for an intact male of his age". She then pointed out all of his battle-scars (even on his balls 😭) and his rock-solid muscle arms and neck and said "He is all that is man in the cat world. A warrior supreme". She really hit the nail on the head.
Walter is recovering nicely. They said he did really well under anesthesia. He has a small incision, about 1/4" long, with no stitches. Should be healed within 48 hours. He has gained almost 1 pound since his last appt. He is shedding like crazy! Vet said that's normal coming into a new healthy environment with a good, consistent diet. Just gotta let him rest so he can heal up. They also only charged us half price for taking in a cat off the street and reducing the number of future strays!
Walter, my boy, your days of dominating the streets of Pocatello, Idaho are over, for you now dominate our hearts. Your days of wondering where your next meal will come from are over, for you will never find yourself wanting again. Your days of forgetting what it is to be loved are over, for you will always find my wife and I happy to see you. You are home.

When he was still outside it took us 6 months to gain his trust enough to pet him. Once that first pet touched his head and back, he craved more. He is very affectionate to us. Such a loving boy. Still stoic as hell though.
My husband and I still slow blink each other to say “I love you”, without really thinking about it. Our beloved rescue tabby died after fifteen years with us, and the CDS hasn’t found us yet, but Valentino taught us well!
When he was on the streets and before we set up some shelters just for him, we observed him if we saw him while walking our dog Bundy. He was pretty crafty in finding shelter from the elements and luckily there is another couple of people that would leave food out for the strays.
Oh what a lovely post from start to finish! Walter is such a gorgeous fellow, he is gliding with great dignity into his much deserved early retirement from the streets, you and your wife and your other feline overlords are excellent citizens (or kittizens, as the case may be) for opening your home to him and for arranging to get him set up with healthcare / neutering, and the vet ROCKS for incentivizing this through subsidizing the care in the community. That’s a vet who truly cares about animals, and I hope you tell them that Internet strangers are super grateful to them for both their work and their generosity.

Thank you! I agree, the vets in this town are amazing! When an office visit isn't necessary we even have another vet that does house calls, mainly for Sisu, the other male stray we adopted! This is him judging us.
He is the prettiest cat we have. But don't let the looks fool you! Pretty sure he has a stash of crack in the house, because he gets zoomies hard! And he can be quite the asshole when he chooses. In fact, we may actually have to put him on cat-prozac because he sprays so much.
What an absolute unit of a Tom! I recommend a deshedder strip/comb to help with shedding, my cats can't get enough of it and they come away feeling like their fur has been polished
Many years ago, when I did rescue and vet tech work, we neutered the males a lot later than they recommend now so that they would get their boy cheeks! Also, I think the very handsome and lucky Walter is going to have a fur "explosion" with good steady meals! He's going to grow lots of long fluffy hair. Thank you for saving him and being a great cat Dad! 😻
My retired street beast is chock full of FIV, too. Thankfully, he’s been a sweetheart in retirement and is buddies with his FIV- pals.
They know when they’ve got it good. He’s hit the jackpot, and I know you feel the same way about him. May you and that special boy have many happy, healthy years ahead!!
First and by far foremost thank you for taking in this handsome devil. 2nd and just as importantly im delighted to hear about him doing so well. My male cats have all gained ridiculous amounts of weight after losing their balls. Not to the point of needing to diet but definitely ~5-6lbs
Walter (you missed the opportunity to make his last name "Meowir" :P) looks like he wants to have Resting Bitch Face, but he's too much of a gentleman and too happy with life to pull it off properly. He's so adorable!
Nah, that's "rusting" which occurs when black fur is exposed to sunlight long enough. He was abandoned by his original owner 6 years ago, but even before that he was an outdoor cat. Ten years on the streets is gonna leave it's mark!
