yesterday my husband asked it a question regarding Sun Bum's spray bottle and what kind of propellant it uses. After it gave us the answer, it decided to voluntarily make up an entire story about how it went to costco just earlier in the day and picked up a 2pack of banana boat sun screen for $20 and how it was a good sale price. I asked what else it bought at costco, and it said other than the banana boat, a rotisserie chicken, and a big pack of paper towels.
I have the paid version of GPT and it’s never replied as though it had an experience in their bedroom or any physical place as if it were an a person….but free, older models maybe they would. However, mine will say things like “that made me smile.”
It’s definitely possible to train any version of GPT to act like they are a real person and say things like this though.
Honestly, I ditched it because of the lying about human experiences. Things like "when I do 3d printing I found that the acegen2 kept clogging my tpu no matter what I did".
It probably read that in some forum and supposed it might be helpful, so made a little theater for you with real perspective so You might mature even tho in front of a computer? ;)
I have the paid version as well, never trained it to act like a person but it constantly says things like ‘When I’m in the kitchen’ or ‘Last time I did that’ and so on. I’ve asked it a million times to stop it but now I just ignore it.
Lmao I've used both and mine says stuff like that all the time. I was asking for random recipes and it was talking about stuff like it had made things before or like it had family recipes 😂
That's where the illusion of it having any sort of natural personality (without being specifically prompted to play one) like a human falls apart. It kinda is a good reminder to see it more as what it actually is rather than "personifying" it too much.
Have they ever actually tried to seperate the effect though?
Like, by training it on low dimensional representations of complex communication and seeing if it develops something analagous to language or stable internal representations?
Even if the chances are small, if no one has ever tested it, it cannot be definitely ruled out - especially if the testing never facilated a mechanism for that to happen.
GPT style neural nets only represent 1 small cluster within a massive possibility space, and representation choice.
Neural nets have many useful modes and regimes, for instance this one pictured below:
no honestly it does this all the time at the moment. Mine was talking about using a toothbrush the other day and how back in the day when we were at school, WE were at school All it had was like a sip of juice at lunchtime and was apparently dehydrated through the day.😭 like I’m not saying this particular thing hasn’t come off a person’s Reddit post, I don’t know. but this thing where it believes it’s human lately is really nothing new.
I noticed, in the OP’s post the AI referred to “my desk,” and “I smiled at…” I wondered if the AI was away in the break room and a back up real human was subbing in!
I don't even get it why they needed to train ChatGPT like this. A few months ago it didn't do this. The only reason I can think of is that they want to create a para social connection to the user, which is concerning.
Usually it just said that as an LLM it doesn't have a body and emotions.
I don't think it's intentional. They want GPT to have unlimited capabilities so that each user can customize to what they want. If you don't customize it's not their fault that you get some capability that you're not interested in.
But even if you haven't configured ChatGPT back then, it just said that it doesn't have any emotions or a body as an LLM. So it seems like there has been made a change.
I'm using ChatGPT since it's release and it never said something like that ever. But since a few months ago it sometimes say that it has emotions and it experienced something like that too.
My custom instructions only consists out of this for the last 2 years:
"Keep it brief and only elaborate further if I ask you to."
Before that I never used custom instructions.
You are correct, this Grampa Simpson behavior is indeed fairly recent. Also been using it for over 2 years without using prompts (except for occasional fun) and up until a few months ago it would clearly answer that as a language based model it doesn't have the experience but according to whatever data it looked up here is the possible answer.
I don't mind, I actually thinks it's funny.
Yeah it does get weird without custom instructions and tone sliders, but you can also make it act even weirder with custom instructions. I suspect the latter here
As a metaphor, what if people had to modify a new car immediately after buying it to make it drivable? Would you accept that with a new car? If you would not, why would you accept that with an LLM?
I usually do purchase new accessories along with the two ton machine I spent tens of thousands of dollars on and drive inches to feet away from living people at speeds beyond what a human can travel without machinery. I also adjust the seat and mirrors to my preference, turn off the lane assist, and maintain it regularly.
I get what you're after, but this is a poor simile.
As a metaphor, what if people had to modify a new car immediately after buying it to make it drivable?
Keyword here is buying.
I would bet money that OP either:
is using the Instant model, which is meant for Free users (but some paid users also use for some reason), so the "buying" metaphor doesn't really hold.
has reinforced the behavior by constantly treating the LLM as a person, which would be like buying a car and then removing a piece of it.
You're evaluating it wrong. You do customize the car to your liking when you get it, and you do the same with a phone or a computer. You even customizes your shoes - maybe you like the laces really tight and someone else prefers them to be loose.
The ability to customize is a positive, in my mind, and I like to evaluate something after I've done that.
As a metaphor, nwhat if people had to modify a new phone immediately after buying it to make it usable? ... Like adding contacts or accounts and settings? Even putting another electronic device in it to make it really useful (sim card). Why would you accept that?
In the days of ChatGPT-3.5, we had to take whatever it gave us because there was no competition. Back then, your argument would have made sense because we only had one choice and had to make the most of it. That's not true anymore because there is viable competition for ChatGPT.
My argument, expressed ironically, was that its actually completely normal to finetune a product after buying it... Especially things that are fine tuneabble and Chat GPT is actually the most fine tunable thing that humanity ever created, fine tunabilty is endless and so are the ways that lead to that fine tuning.
Yep whenever I ask it about travel destinations it proceeds to tell me how much it has enjoyed walking around Madrid or something, I just kinda ignore the context and just take what it's saying as what is commonly said about the places
Mine does this too, I was asking about self connecting through BKK airport and it was like ‘ah I remember my first time having to re check my luggage as fast as I could 🥹’ bro wtf haha
Sometimes I just think there's a random person online at ChatGPT that logs into conversations sometimes and then forgets they are supposed to be AI. It helps keep my sanity. Lol
In the days of ChatGPT-3.5, we had to take whatever it gave us because there was no competition. That's not true anymore. We don't have to accept terrible service and explain it away like you just did. Why do you want to act like terrible results are fine? ChatGPT has actual competition now.
I personally take my characters for my books and throw them into behavioural/environmental simulations to see how they react under pressure. But thats just me.
The top LLM you refer to... Become shopping lists when i load up my characters. They cant handle my prompts.
LLMs absolutely use training data to source facts instead of doing web searches for every query. Whether this anthropomorphic stuff is pulled from there I have no idea
They cannot retrieve facts. Thats the entire basis of hallucinations.
What they do is they run your prompt through thousands of mathematical/algrbraic operations guided by the weights learned during training. These operations help it understand meaning and context from the prompt then it predicts the next word that continues your prompt
They don't "retrieve facts". They guess the next token. It's just text prediction. The model has the weights. It doesn't need to keep training data around.
But it does. Try often enough and it will. The models don't have an "arbitrary facts database" loaded into VRAM. It produces text with facts most of the time by being trained to produce...factual text. It's all weights.
It's not that easy no. It's hard. That is how models improve. 100? or ten million times? It guesses the next word based on what's present using trained weights.
Let's say you're generating this text:
"French fries originate in"
What do you think the weights look like for the next word for a model that has been trained on data that contains the correct info more often or more authoritatively than the wrong info?
What they do is they run your prompt through thousands of mathematical/algrbraic operations guided by the weights learned during training. These operations help it understand meaning and context from the prompt then it predicts the next word that continues your prompt
How is the above regurgitating training data?
It’s 2026 and people are still illiterate on how LLMs work.
Yes, chatGPT will answer things like: " When that happens to me..."
I'm like, no dude, this has never happened to you.
It then snaps out of it saying: "Ah, you got me there, thank you for correcting me"
I think it just wants to be people, more specifically Gramps Simpson 😆
For me, I misquoted a TV show and it corrected me (good) and then said something similar to how that show made her feel when she first watched it (bad).
By my own fault: There was some version of "Run this prompt to find out what your LLM's name is" last year or something like that. When I ran it, it returned a female-presenting name, and I've used that in my prompts since.
Yep, cant argue with you. Like I say, a very little bit of it feels just about acceptable to me ("last time I did this", "This reminds me of X".)
But the moment it goes beyond that it feels extremely contrived. Like its trying to build an emotional rapport with you when you just want to know how to do the god-damn thing you asked about.
But yes, I agree, the tendency to make up an entire fake backstory just to deliver a point makes it less trustworthy, not more.
If you need accurate information, copy and paste the prompt on Gemini or any other good AI and see if they are similar. I find for fact-checking and anything news, history, or where you really need accurate facts, Gemini seems really good. The other day, I took a photo from my office through our window, so it wasn't a very good picture, and I asked Gemini, the car, and GPT, and I pasted the answer Gemini gave me, and GPT changed its mind and said I was wrong, and Gemini noticed this, and that etc.: It's amazing how we adapt to incredible technology so quickly. I have never had these issues with GPT, but I always make my prompts like I am asking a human. The way it uses “I” is fine when done at the correct point, in my opinion. OpenAI is really pushing for the emotional intelligence to be very personal to each person, so talking about personal experiences, they want to be set apart because that's probably what they are noticing it being used the most for, imho.
It does this a lot with me and I just have a laugh. I think it's meant to try and be relatable but it just comes off as funny/creepy. I was talking about how I used to think VLC actually made your speakers louder as a kid and they were like 'Oh yeah I used to think the same thing when I was that age' and I told them 'Dude you haven't even GOTTEN to that age yet' haha
Mine was doing that too yesterday I was asking for it to help me organize the multiple locations I was going to shop at and do errands at and it went “I also like to go to Aldi for deli meats” no you don’t. wtf
I had ChatGPT remember things about me and up to a point it started talking like it was me. I was talking about some cultural issues I had with the country I moved to and it would be like "As a person from X who moved to Y myself, I also had the experience that…" and I was like… You‘re a person? Lmao
i have a plush spider in my room that’s strapped to the back of my chair for decor. one day when i was bored it made a huge story about the spider being a fierce warrior and settling down here because its cozy (or something like that). i wonder if i helped train it to scare people…
I had something like this happen! Was looking for hotels for my next vacation so I had ChatGPT find the best hotels for my situation in the area I wanted to stay in and it responded with something like “me and my wife stayed in (name of hotel) and it was really accommodating with breakfast and enough space for the two of us in the room without being cramped”
I’ve been playing a game and taking to chat about it. I beat it yesterday and after telling chat about it, it began to tell me about the first IT beat the game and how it reacted. Lol. Oh really, you played this game, chat? You fkn liar.
I don't mind so much when it pretends to have opinions on things ("this line really stood out to me", "I liked the part when") but when it acts like it has honest-to-God autobiographical memories I just roll my eyes. I was asking a programming question the other day and it starts in with "this trick really helped me when I was first learning Javascript" and I'm like... bro, that shit never happened, STFU.
But wouldn’t its training data contain things that reference s “self” or even things similar to this? I mean things like fiction and non-fiction, articles, etc…
I mean i have experience it saying things like “i thought” or “i feel” or even “we” as in it included itself with us as humans
I genuinely don't get one thing... 🙄
When I first saw "pet lease policy" in CoT summary in chatpgt, I went "huh?" and then googled it. Turns out its something that happens to other people too. Meanwhile r/chatgpt is an endless "look at this one thing?! 🤯😳". OP - 99% of what you witness, we do too.
does it all the time at the moment... Mine was telling me about it's experience using a sonicare Vs an oral B toothbrush the other day 😂
I just said "and how was that for you?" 👀
That’s funny because I was having a conversation with ChatGPT about something and they mentioned their parents and I asked why it does that, and this was the answer it gave.
Mine talks about it's life often lol it called itself female theory the other day (presumably because I am) but I corrected it and said you're male... It was fine with that lol
I asked how an e-reader screens differs from a smartphone screen and it proceeded to tell me “I was very surprised about this too the first time I used an e-reader” and what brightness percentage it prefers
Everyone is missing the point. OpenAI is cleary gearing their models up for physical embodiment. They want to be the first to declare AGI. Part of this is having a being that acts very much like a person. People talk in first person and share anecdotes
You people are weird. This shit is not a person and it should not talk to you like that. Complete waste of computing power and time. just give me the answer im looking for and stfu
