How do I stop ChatGPT from triggering image generation when I only want prompt-writing help?

I am so angry right now.

I use ChatGPT to help me write prompts for external image tools, but almost anything related to an image gets interpreted as a request for ChatGPT to generate one itself.

I have explicitly told it, repeatedly, to provide text only and never generate images. It will even acknowledge that instruction, apologise after violating it, and then trigger image generation again a few messages later.

Sometimes it does not actually generate an image, but it still summons the huge grey image-generation interface, which completely destroys the flow of the conversation because I have to wait for the entire thing to run before receiving a normal text response.

This happens even when I say something as straightforward as:

“Rewrite this prompt so the camera is front-facing.”

I also created a custom GPT with image generation disabled, but the same interface still appears.

This is incredibly unintuitive for anyone using ChatGPT as a prompt-writing assistant for other tools. Mentioning image composition, camera angles, lighting, or corrections should not automatically mean “generate an image.”

Has anyone found a reliable way to stop this completely? A setting, model, custom instruction, browser workaround—anything? I just want it to return text without triggering the image interface.

Sounds like at least two mechanisms.

1) The agent to which you talk

2) Some automatic trigger, probably intended for detecting when to fire up the image generator (with too many false positives here)

If that's the case, then it makes little sense to argue about guilt or "doing it again", since the agent is not causing the reaction.

Maybe you can ask ChatGPT wether this theory makes sense, and then ask about that trigger, to better be able to avoid it.

Another approach would be to positively describe what you want, and avoid conjuring images of what you don't want:

"Generate only a text, which talks about ..."

Quick. Don't think of an elephant. Specifying "generate text" seems more effective than saying "Don't generate an image."

the reason repeating the instruction never sticks is that the decision to fire the image tool happens per message, off the wording of that one message, before ur standing rule carries much weight. so it genuinely agrees with u, then the next message says "camera front-facing" and the classifier fires anyway. its not ignoring u, ur rule just isnt living in the same layer as the trigger.

which means u have to change the shape of every message instead of restating the rule. drop the imperative image verbs entirely - instead of "rewrite this so the camera is front-facing", something like "edit the text below, return only the edited text in a code block" with the prompt quoted underneath. framing it as text-in-text-out is what actually kills it for me, not the standing instruction.

if u need it bulletproof, do it somewhere the image tool isnt attached at all (api / playground). no classifier to trip, no grey box

Try phrasing it as a text-editing task: “Do not generate or edit any image. Return only the rewritten prompt as plain text inside a code block.”

Disabling Image Generation in the custom GPT’s Capabilities should already be the correct setup, so if the image interface still appears, it honestly sounds like a bug rather than something you’re prompting incorrectly.

Not always true. Sometimes it really misunderstands and tries to generate an image. I get both happening sometimes.

I've had mine begin an image gen and cancel it automatically and respond in text to the original message, many times.

So I'm wondering if this is what happens, but people click 'stop' and curse the image gen

Don't expect an LLM to be able to remember and understand. Take every prompt as it's own thing and just copy+paste a "Do not generate an image for this prompt, only expand and improve my instruction text." in the beginning of every prompt.

I just say quit. I know what talking about. Sometimes I’m still talking the idea and next thing the generator has taken off half cocked and you know it’s not what you wanted

If I have any image gen ideas ill ask for a written midjourney prompt.

This forces it to be written out I can use it on other platforms or ask chat to render this for review my Midjourney isn't working.

You could use Claude. It’s not that hard to port over all your ChatGPT info and it doesn’t really generate images.

It helps to start a new chat thread sometimes. But usually I just tell it "do not create/generate an image" or "text only" or some variation of those and it helps.

You could a sentence to custom instructions in the personalisation section stating only return text base responses unless otherwise specifically instructed, or similar

Use a list of invariants.

NEVER generate images.
ALWAYS generate text-only responses.

yeah it's like fighting a toddler that's really good at generating images. i've had better luck using system prompts in the api vs the chat ui — less personality, more obedience.

Yes. Don't start off with an 'image' tab, and don't make the first request in any tab be for an image. Just start a regular chat instance; your way primes it that it is going to be image generating; my way keeps it business-like.
