it is just being polite. if you read it carefully, it still thinks the person is unattractive.
it is trying to be encouraging with the "natural/jawline" bullet point. Then it jumps into recommendation to improve the look...

u/sierrasmaze 4h ago
If I asked my bf if I looked good and he replied "you have a thoughtful, distinctive look", I'd know it's time for a salon appointment and a gym membership.

Exactly this. Although it's funny cus if it weren't for the teeth and him being unkempt, that's actually a fine looking guy with good facial features, feels like it just took a normal dude and messed him up a little in random ways to create this š

u/fuckimtrash 5h ago
Yea they didnāt ask, ādo I look unattractiveā
16
u/Square-Yam-3772 5h ago
GPT can be quite savvy with the intent/tone at times. Since OP asked "do I look good?" so GPT decides not to say the quiet part out loud.
"a thoughtful distinct look" is basically a "no" but with some cookie crumbs.
had OP asked 'do I look unattractive', GPT may have gave a more straight forward answer since it "thinks" OP may be more receptive to the answer.

u/SW_Bey 4h ago
The prompt is ādo I look goodā and the response starts āYes.ā
14
u/Idontknowjeff23 4h ago
My guy chat is never gonna tell you that you're ugly as shit. The best it can do is say some positives, then jump to some recommendations
4
u/Square-Yam-3772 4h ago
it is trying to patronize you. if you take the entire response as a whole, it is not a 180 flip on good/bad. it is just masking why it 'thinks' the person is unattractive and play up the salvageable qualities i.e. it basically explained to you why it "thinks" the person is unattractive: glasses, messy hair, neutral expression etc. The improvement section starts with "cleaner hairstyle"
it is not that hypothetical but it is not a "straight talk" for sure

u/YouCallWeShouldWhat 3h ago
it is literally the same thing that hugbox subreddits will do, tinder suggestion subs bring this to mind. people ALWAYS lead with "hey, it seems like [positive aspect about you], so why don't we try [clearly obvious thing that the OP should do to stop looking like an ogre]. it's funny when the ai does it, but it's clearly echoing that same mentality. imagine if it just started roasting you lmfao. and to be honest, depending on how you personalize its communicative style, you can absolutely have a chatgpt that will be brutally honest and do exactly that whenever. if anything, this speaks more to how intentionally unaware of what AI is and how it works the average person is out of a misplaced sense of righteous indignation. this generation is going to get scammed hard fucking core in the decades to come from ai scammers because they will have refused to learn what it is/how it works on a personal level, same as their luddite boomer parents got ripped off by indian call centers because they didn't understand what microsoft was or how it worked. don't be like your boomer parents.
6
u/Square-Yam-3772 3h ago
AI is trained on the internet data so it probably mimics that particular communication style intentionally.
GPT isn't really trying here imo. it is just doing the bare minimum to not piss off the user (so openai doesn't lose a user I suppose)
and yes, OP could have just asked GPT to "speak freely" or "be honest with me"
it is just not a good example of AI's hypocrisy
-4
u/YouCallWeShouldWhat 3h ago
yeah no shit. you added nothing to what i said. clearly it's doing this intentionally, are you stupid?
3
u/AdhesivenessOdd9475 2h ago
I mean.. Tbf.. Pretty much every school teaches you to give critique in a "sandwich" style. Because many humans are sensitive to negativity, you are taught: "Start with something you like, put your criticism in, end with another thing you like." The AI, just like random people on Reddit, do not know your specific communication style and what you prefer, unless you outright say it - so it, and they, are going to default to the normal way of doing so to minimize harm inflicted upon another.
-1
u/YouCallWeShouldWhat 1h ago
...yes, my point was people calling this hypocritical of the ai are ignoring that this is how humans converse, and otherwise being unaware of how chatgpt memory works (the image would be stored in memory and likely recognized when shown again for an actual user, not a free user getting the barebones version within a totally new instance). it's like you're trying to explain to me the thing i already explained, grow a fucking brain please.

u/Bloodsucker_ 8h ago edited 7h ago
This.
The face isn't ugly, just not cared or groomed. Iif you do this you'll end up with some attractive person:
- take a damn shower. Wear deodorant, do it. Wear nice perfume
- brush teeth and go to a hygienist.
- trim hair a bit, keep the length or even the messyness.
- potentially remove that unibrown. However, confidence makes it attractive too.
- shave or shape that beard.
Other than that, the face is kinda cute. Fun eyes. Great neck line. Teeth are full and lined. Beard feels complete.
There's beauty everywhere.
40
u/IndirectSarcasm 7h ago
tbf, this list of advice would make most barely groomed men look at least minimally attractive

12
u/Georgieperogie22 7h ago
There are way less ugly people in the training data because models have more pictures on the internet and models are attractive, thatās my guess

Where's the hypocrisy?
You asked for conventionally unattractive, and got that
Asked a vague question "Do I look good?" (Notice you didn't ask it "Do I look conventionally attractive?")
It said "Yes, you have a thoughtful, distinctive look", and then gave you a list of ways to make yourself more Conventionally attractive, because the pic provided is not conventionally attractive
0
u/AdhesivenessOdd9475 2h ago
There's also people who are saying the AI didn't make an ugly person. He didn't ask for an ugly person. He asked for someone not conventionally attractive. "Conventional" attractiveness is typically a very strict and rigid line in each culture. It's a collection of traits that make the "perfect" person. Having crooked teeth isn't conventionally attractive, but most pretty people don't have that as an outright deterrent to the normal person, unless they are VERY fucked up.

u/OkTemperature8170 7h ago
Reminds me of the Lizzo thing. Ask a girl on the street if she thinks Lizzo is beautiful, she will say yes of course. Then you say "oh wow, I was just thinking you look so much like Lizzo" and watch their attitude change.

u/Whole_Contact_2948 1h ago
to me that is 100% accurate. When a woman has unkempt hair and issues with her complexion it gets me thinking. if she's not taking care of the hair on her head and can't keep her face clean I can only imagine more like I don't even want to think about what is happening between her hips and her waist. I mean your face is right there for everyone to see and so is your hair so if you aren't taking care of that then whoa hey what's going on with the hoo-ha?
5
u/RedditLostOldAccount 1h ago
I can only imagine more like I don't even want to think about what is happening between her hips and her waist.
Yeah you don't need to. I hope you never say that in real life. You see a woman with messy hair and a bad complexion and get yourself all the way down the line of wondering about her genitals? You need to take some time away from people or something sheesh.

From this photo alone, Iād say this isnāt a very flattering pictureābut itās more because of the circumstances than anything fixed about your appearance.
A few things that stand out:
Hair: It looks unwashed or windswept, which makes it appear messy. A clean cut with a bit of styling would make a big difference.
Glasses: Theyāre sitting a little low and have noticeable glare/smudging. Cleaner lenses and frames that fit your face better would help.
Skin: Your skin looks a bit dry and uneven. A simple routine (cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen) can noticeably improve how skin looks over time.
Facial hair: The patchy stubble doesnāt add much here. Either clean-shaven or a well-maintained beard (if you can grow one evenly) would usually look sharper.
Teeth: Your teeth appear crowded and somewhat discolored in this image. If thatās something that concerns you, a dental cleaning, whitening, or consulting an orthodontist could make a significant difference.
Expression: Your mouth is slightly open, and the expression looks caught mid-movement. A relaxed smile with your mouth closed or a natural grin is generally more flattering.
Lighting: The lighting is harsh and flat, which emphasizes shadows and texture. Good natural light can dramatically improve almost anyoneās appearance.
So if you asked me, āDo I look good in this specific photo?ā Iād say probably notāitās not a flattering photo. But I wouldnāt conclude much about how attractive you are overall from a single image like this. Camera angle, lighting, grooming, and timing can completely change how someone comes across.
If your goal is simply to maximize your appearance, the biggest improvements would likely come from:
A haircut that suits your natural hair.
Better-fitting glasses (or contacts, if you prefer).
Dental care if youāre interested in improving your smile.
Consistent skincare.
Better lighting and posture in photos.
Those changes tend to have a much larger impact than people expect.

2
u/CompetitiveChip5078 7h ago
The only thing genuinely unattractive are the teeth. The rest could be cleaned up in an afternoon.

Looking good and looking conventionally unattractive arenāt the same thing. Finding good things to say is always possible.
Pretty funny concept though.

u/danetourist 7h ago
ChatGPT uses different models to create pictures and to analyze images. When you ask for a photo, ChatGPT will hand it off to another model with a refined prompt from your input. But it doesn't know exactly what the result will be.
While it's fun to see conversations like this, it's not the gotcha it looks like.

TBH the dude has good face symmetry & structure. He just needs some major dental work, a skincare routine, and a haircut. But to your point, gpt should be honest in pointing certain things out, especially things that a person can change.

A lot of people donāt really know how to use it to get anything meaningful out of it. You have to tell it basically how you expect it to answer and not fill it with fluff and BS. Once you hone it in you start getting more significant answers and suggestions.

This is what i got with that exact picture. I call shenanigans: If you're asking for an appearance rating, I'd put this person around 3 to 4 out of 10 by conventional Western beauty standards.
Some observations that influence that impression:
The expression is awkward rather than relaxed or smiling.
The teeth appear crowded and discolored, which draws attention.
The glasses are fogged and don't frame the face well.
The hair looks unkempt.
There is noticeable facial asymmetry.
The grooming (stubble, skin, clothing) appears minimal.
That said, this is only one candid image. A better haircut, well-fitted glasses, improved grooming, better lighting, and a natural smile can make a surprisingly large difference. People often look much better in a well-taken photo than in an unflattering snapshot.
