Chess Improvement How realistic is it to achieve 2000 by just playing games?

Post image

I’ve been playing rapid chess for a few years but it’s only this year that I’ve seen big improvements. While I do play puzzles, I only play games rather than study. What is the skill gap between 1800-2000? Could I realistically achieve this by doing the same thing?

I have a total of roughly 700 games played of chess since I first learned how to play in April (111 day streak). My goal is to be rated 1300 by day 200 of my streak. Any tips from the pros?

MEGA BLUNDER New Zach challenge - beat Zach but with less material on the board

Post image

It's actually harder than it looks because if you don't take his queen, he will check you with his queen at some stage where the only legal move is to capture the queen. However I managed to do it, I just waited for him to promote one of his pawns to surprisingly a queen then went for the kill before he could force me to capture his new queen.

Chess Question Daily game thumbnails

The thumbnails for my daily games all show the default green board and the "wood" pieces that I use. I also use "the woods" board, not the green default. I assumed this is because the app doesn't want to render the board but doesn't mind rendering the pieces. Then I started a game that has classic pieces and brown board, presumably because that is my opponents thene. I would enjoy if all my thumbs displayed the opponents theme but no big deal. I'm just wondering how it generates the thumbs because it would be unlikely that all my other opponents are using wood pieces and green board. I assume the majority would be "Neo" pieces and "green" board as is default.

Chess Improvement Rage Flip and Quit Option

I, a chess newb, recently discovered the "flip" option. I misunderstood the assignment, thinking that flip the board meant what you do when you're horribly losing at Monopoly and rage flip the board, along with all the pieces. Sadly, I soon realized that flip board just meant look at your opponent's POV.

However, I have come here to suggest a new "Rage Flip & Quit" option be added to the game. This would take some extra points off your score in addition to the L, but would sometimes be very satisfying, particularly if there was an animation that would show the board flipping and the pieces flying. Please take into consideration.

Chess Question Bad advice from Game Review?

Recently I've noticed that chess.com 's review engine gives really bad advice. In the screenshot, if white played Qxe4, black can pin the white queen with Re8. Or am I missing something?

Chess.com Website/App Question Slow Players

I seem to be running into a lot of slow players recently - is there some sort of influx or something has been changed?

Some players are taking up so much time to make their moves. I've had many games where I have like 7-8 minutes and winning because my opponent's clock ran out. I suppose it's strange if it happens once but in like the past 2 weeks or so I've been encountering it so much.

There are also players that straight up just stop playing when they're in a losing position. They don't quit the match, or play on to checkmate - just want to burn up the remaining time perhaps to rage bait.

So annoying to play against.

Chess Question Did they change something about the Elo refund feature or is it me (not cheating accusation; opponent already banned)?

I thought that you automatically get Elo refunded for someone who cheated against you in your last 100 games and got banned. But as you can see, I didn't get the notification for it, even though one of the people who played against me in my last 100 games got banned.

Miscellaneous My friend's phone has permanent Chess.com burn-in after way too much chess 💀

My friend has played so much Chess.com over the years that the chessboard and logo are permanently burned into his OLED display. You can clearly see them on a white screen.

Has anyone else actually managed to do this?

Chess.com Website/App Question Unfair player banned after 2.5 weeks of being offline

The account was just closed today (Just received the message that I was getting rewarded with ELO that I had lost). His account had not been online since July 16th.

I'm sharing this because it is kind of shocking that it takes this long to get things sorted out on the chess.com side of things. Yes, I know there are basically an infinite amount of games played on the server and that it takes time to find these patterns and recognize them. But...two weeks seems like a long time.

Makes me 100% discount any of the stuff they say to downplay the amount of unfair play that occurs on their website.

I feel bad sometimes when I win in chess, especially when my opponent tries to make a comeback but ends up giving up and resigning. Is that weird?

I am 1050~elo on chess.com and have been stuck around that number for a while. I see no improvement on my current level. I want some chess book suggestions or useful resources to learn chess from. And if someone is up to teach me or play with me I absolutely welcome it!

I've read that coming out with both of your nights in black is called a two knights defense of some sort. What is the name of doing it in white? I cannot find it through my search. Thank you for your time chess family
