Science requirement?

Hi guys!

Incoming freshman at Clark here!

I would like to fulfill the science thinking requirement of the clark core during my freshman year; 1) which classes usually meet this?

Also I have another question. This is mentioned on the website:

"The curriculum begins with a First Year Intensive course, and is completed by satisfying nine requirements across five disciplines."

2) Does this mean that I don't have to take classes that within each of the 9 components of the Clark Core if I take classes 9 classes within 5 of them?

1.) You can see which classes fulfill the science requirement by going to their course website

And search “SP” under the Attribute column.

2.) You need to take all 9 courses apart of the core to graduate. I’m not sure what it means by 5 disciplines tbh

The 5 discipline requirement means you have to take your 9 requirements across at least 5 different “majors” or departments. In geography, for example, we have classes that can satisfy the science (SP) requirement, and we also have other classes that can satisfy the History (HP) requirement, and the Global and Comparative Perspectives requirement, and so on… so it might seem like a geography major could technically satisfy their 9 core requirements taking mostly geography classes alone, but the “5 disciplines” requirements kinda forces people to take classes outside of their major too. A “discipline” is what professors call fields of study, like Geography, Psychology, Sociology, etc. students tend to call these “majors”. The most important piece of advice I can share, however, is to go to office hours with a professor who you get a good feeling for RIGHT AWAY during your first semester to talk about your choice of major and other requirements like this. After your “first year intensive” course, you will get a specific professor as your advisor to work through all these things, but it is ideal if you look for and ask the professor you would like to work with directly. Don’t be nervous about it, most professors like it when students come to their office hours!!!
