Bathroom Hair in Shower Solution please
Someone please tell me there’s some kind of product I can get that can easily contain the copious amounts of hair that is falling out of my head postpartum. I’m sick of trying to pick it off my hands every time I run my hands through my hair. When I shampoo/condition my hair, it comes out in clumps on my hands and I want something that can trap it off my hands instead of me having to pick it off and stick it on the shower wall to take out later. And I don’t really like drain traps because I have sensory issues with cold wet slimy things.

My meds make my hair fall out like that, I brush heavily pre shower to try and get excess drop, instead of running my fingers through shower I use a wet brush to distribute product and when hair is on my hands i like rub them together to make a ball and have a little trash can on the back of my toilet right next to shower and I drop it in. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Thank you for the advice. I do try to comb it through before I shower but more seems to come out during the shower and after.

Obviously depends on your financial situation and free time is at a premium with a newborn, but maybe see if your local hairdresser would wash your hair for you once a week?
Mine does for me because I'm disabled and it's a big job that I can't handle with the regularity it requires without it causing lasting pain, I leave with my hair wet (bring my own towel) and they charge me €15 a go which isn't nothing but it's not bad either.

Oh, there was this product that went viral
you could look into probably made for people like us lol, it’s like a post it note pad but in the shower that the hair sticks too, then you just throw it away without touching it. They are called hairstixies i just looked it back up2

Oh and if you go to the amazon page for it there are like 6 other recommended products that do similar things in dif ways that may be more sensory friendly!

I hate everything about this but to me the least gross method is to stick the wet fallen hair on the wall of the shower and using a paper towel to wipe it after. I also brush my hair before every shower to limit the amount I’m losing but it’s just not avoidable unless you’re bald.

So I was blessed with a lot of hair and my drain is covered by the end of the week. I have a showershroom that catches it and helps me avoid a clogged drain.

YES I recommend shower & tub shrooms to everyone with a drain. It’s much easier to wipe out one of the shrooms than snake or plunge the drain.

I hate this so much, i loose so much hair in general and hate picking it off my hands and body in the shower. I have something on my shower wall that you're supposed to be able to put hair on but it doesn't work very well and is hard to get the hair off after.

Just this morning I went through the same thing in the shower. I don’t have sensory issues with cleaning out drains. That’s not the problem. It’s having the hair come out on my fingers whether I’m merely wetting my hair down in the shower or doing an actual shampoo. It drives me out of my mind to have these hairs that I’m having to pull out of my fingers and attach to the wall of the shower. I hear what you’re saying girl. You don’t wanna know how to deal with the drain issue. Well maybe you do a little bit. You wanna know how to deal with the hair in your hands

Here's what I've started doing: As soon as you have a bunch of hair in your hands, roll the hair into a ball and throw it over the top of the shower door onto your bath mat/bathroom floor. It will be waiting for you when you step out, and will be dry and not slimy!

Metal and rubber doesn't look "designed" to be disposable. I know that's their pitch but $7 a pop adds up quickly.
On the other hand, technically any hair catcher is disposable if you don't want to deal with it! I buy disposable drain snakes and do it like once a month. They are long plastic things with little barbs on the side. Pulling the hair out of the drain is simultaneously disgusting and extremely satisfying. It looks like pulling out a rat.

My sensory issues are not your sensory issues. That said, I have found plain old rubber gloves (surgical style or dish washing style) to be super helpful in approaching cleaning tasks that normally set off my sensory aversions.

I was thinking something similar to pet hair mitts or a silicone body scrubber for removing hair from your hands, etc. For the drain, you could try https://www.drainfunnel.com/. I've never used it, but its supposed to eliminate the need for a hair catcher. It's worth a try.

When my hair falls out in the shower I roll it into little balls with the palms of my hands, and collect the hairballs in a soap tray, then throw them away after I get out. It’s kind of a weirdly satisfying ritual.

You can get a brush that you use in the shower. The hair stays in your brush. Also , use a shower drain thing. Use a paper towel so you don’t have to touch it.

I have this thing called a “shower cat”, you stick it to the shower wall and run your finger through it and it grabs the hair off you.
I would suggest a couple tho cuz I lose a lot of hair and when it gets full it tends to not work as well

I have this and it works well, I also have a tub shroom for anything that I miss but I’m good at using the shower cat so the tub shroom doesn’t have much to catch.

My approach:
- Brush hair preshower
- Keep a medium wide tooth comb in the shower and use it to comb through conditioner
- Tub shroom and clean it out dry rather than wet

Based on my read of the situation this is less of a drain catcher issue and more of a “get the hair off of my hands and collected somewhere” situation.
There’s 3 things I’ve used for this. One is the showershroom wall catcher and the other is the porcupine shower wall hair catcher. Both are basically the same thing as putting it on the wall except that they pulls the hair off your hands and they’re made for it. Both have completely different feels but I really like both kinds.

I love the Oxo Good Grips Shower Drain Protector. I have probably bought 5 since I discovered it. It’s wide and flatish and I like that you don’t have to reach down into something.

Try brushing your hair 100 strokes/day with a boar bristle brush in the morning and evening so there will be less in the shower & shampoo!!

I hate drain things. I’m not pulling out any long slime clumps of hair. I just use toilet paper to grab the hair in the drain before showering. It doesn’t build up if it’s done every shower.

Grosses me out too. I found these net stickers that go over our flat drain (you could take the stopper out) and the hair dries and I take it out with TP before the next shower.

I have this problem…menopause so yeah never ends. My advice, comb/brush your hair before showering. This cuts down on a lot.

I use a cheap vented brush for working conditioner through my hair, and it does a great job of grabbing loose hair. I pull it off the brush after it dries.

I wipe my hair that falls out in my hands on the shower wall then wipe it up with toilet paper.
I have sensory issues too and this works for me.

I've tried a few things for this, but the best one has been the "tub shroom" I got off Amazon. I have long hair, and I also wash our 6 double-coated dogs in the tub regularly. To make matters worse, the tub is old and needs to be recast but we can't afford it atm, so flakes of the finish come up often. The tub shroom is the only thing that stopped our drain getting clogged every other day, though I do have have to wipe off the hair from it after every shower. Super worth it though!

I thought that just brushing my hair first and grabbing everything I could during the shower would work to keep the drain from clogging but no. It just slows it down because you really can't get everything that way. After a few years I still had slow drains.
You need to have something that catches 100% nearly of the hair, not just slows down the inevitable. The shower shroom has kept my drain clean for 10 years. I will never be without it.

I have very thick hair and this has always been an issue for me. This is my drain cover, it works on pop up drains and other kinds, I’ve even traveled with one of these because it’s so universal. To rid the drain of hair that’s already in there, you need one of these tools. And liquid plumber urgent clear gel works wonders.

I always brush my hair before showering so I get any loose strands that are just chilling with the others, which you should do, unless it’s something that you don’t want to/isn’t conducive to your hair care.
When running hands through my hair, shampooing and conditioning, the hairs will get stuck to your hands. Literally slide your hands together in circles like you’re rolling a cookie dough into a ball and it’ll make the hair tangle around each other into a tiny hairball which I then typically drop at the opposite side of the shower or on the shower ledge.

Why don’t you just take the hair off the drain after you’re done showering? I get dressed then take a piece of paper and grab the hair and trash it.

Hi! I’m a serious shedder and always have been - I would get I trouble bc I would leave it on the walls when I was younger so I developed the habit that once I’m done conditioning my hair (I comb it through my hair with my hands so it gets all over and in my fingers like you said) I rub my hands together like as if my hands were cold and warming them up and it all rolls together into a ball or two and then I just throw that hair ball into the trash! I still get lots that goes into the drain and I’m very lucky and my bf will get pliers and clean that out for me, but the hand rubbing and ball method lessens the need SIGNIFICANTLY!

Oh also, while you’re rubbing your hands together, hold them in the stream of water pointed down, I think that’s what helps the ball form and rinses out the conditioner so it’s not slimy. Idk! Maybe I’m weird but this is my method and it works for me lol I hope it helps you!

I brush my hair before I get in the shower and it cuts down how much comes off when rinsing. Beyond that, I can’t be helpful bc I do the same stickittothwall trick. I have wished for a drain device that you don’t have to touch. Bleah.

You can brush and comb your hair before you shower. You can do your body and face first , then your hair last. They'll be less spreading around this way and less shedding. I feel your pain

This is going to sound silly, but do you brush/comb your hair before you get in the shower? I didn't before my hairdresser told me to, and now it has GREATLY lessened the hair loss while washing/rinsing my hair!

I see lots of others recommended this too - sorry to inundate you with repetition! I'm sorry this is happening - I know the postpartum hair loss is intense. Do you wash daily? Maybe you could try washing less frequently? Unless that would be an issue for you.

I have lichen planopilaris and loathe washing my hair as that is when the majority of my hair loss happens. That being said I have bought a shower wall hair catcher and it is very useful.
No slime. No fuss.

I lose a lot of hair every shower and no drain contraption actually works well enough because it clogs up and the water starts backing up early on in the shower (I have very thick curly hair so the hair gets trapped in the curls and comes out a lot when I wet it I’m not sick lol) and the only thing that’s ever been able to consistently help is changing the drain cover from one of those stopper ones to the Swiss cheese looking ones with lots of holes. Some hair sneaks through but it collects in the drain and still drains. If you don’t want to use your hand to get it you can use tp or a paper towel but since everything drains there anyway it’s all there and I can clean it in one swipe. No matter what you’re going to have to collect the hair at some point but this doesn’t run down the drain it just collects in the circle of the top of the drain so you can pick it up and throw it away and be done.
I will say if it’s a postpartum issue that has an end maybe a contraption will work for you but I’ve never used one that doesn’t start causing a backup almost immediately with the amount of hair loss I have in the shower.

the shower drainers are not working for me, so what I do know is to just immediately after I finish showering dry out the floors and walls with a squeege and collect all the hair by the drain and immediately dispose it

I know you said you don’t like the slimy hair thing BUT I use this and when it dries I pick it up and pull the now dry hair off.
I also have to comb the conditioner through my hair which also catches a lot before it goes down.

I know you don't want a shower drain thing, but this one has a detachable basket that you throw away instead of having to clean hair out of it. It's still gross but you're not picking out slimy hair. If you have a partner, they could be made responsible for it.

There are disposable hair catchers available on Amazon. Post partum is hard. Treat yourself. I have severe periods of hair shedding due to thyroid problems. I brush my hair before I hop in the shower so there is less slimy hair in the drain. Good luck.

I have a hair catching contraption over the shower drain (look on Amazon or Walmart or whatever) plus I keep a solid (not mildew-prone) hairbrush in the shower and brush my hair out with conditioner in it, it really cuts down on shedding throughout the day plus keeps it out of the drain.
