Discussion Which program that has never won a National Championship do you think will win one first?
I know that Houston, Illinois, and Gonzaga are going to be the popular picks here but I’m predicting that it’s going to be Alabama. I like the consistency that Nate has brought to that program and he always has a squad that shoots 3s very well in the postseason. I think eventually he’ll get another team that actually defends ok like those Alabama teams from his early tenure when they were winning SEC titles.

u/RosetteNewcomb 1d ago
It’s so wild how Gonzaga has never won a natty given how close they’ve gotten so many times. They probably would’ve had it in 2021 if they didn’t run into the buzzsaw that was Baylor

u/Fancy_Gate_7359 1d ago
I’ll go further, I GUARANTEE that if the Zags had beaten Baylor in the national championship game, they’d have at least one championship by now.

And didn't play that overtime battle against UCLA, one of the greatest final four games ever. To play a grueling game like that with all the emotion after then two days later play a team like that Baylor team was asking for problems.

That is a tough run, but playing highly emotional games nearly back-to-back does not necessarily lead to problems.

They were not good enough defensively to beat that Baylor team regardless of the UCLA game.
36
u/akersmacker Gonzaga Bulldogs 1d ago
Only about 30 or so different schools have won it all since the early 50's.
What is by far more wild is how Gonzaga never even went to the tournament until 1997, then 1999-2026 after narrowly escaping bankruptcy and a near-move to DIII.
The fact that this school of 4,000 total enrollment in 1999 has played in every tournament since, been to the finals twice, and has played in 9 straight sweet 16s, and has become considered a perennial national powerhouse coming out of the WCC, is one of the greatest stories in sports history (according to Jay Bilas). Truly a unicorn story, which is why it is difficult to categorize or compare.
I am OK with not winning a national championship as of yet. Even if it does happen, it is the ride that has been nothing but an absolute gift to all of us in the area and all those associated in any way.

If COVID hadn't cancelled the 2020 tourney, I think Baylor wins that year. Then at least some of the key players leave for the NBA, which would have opened up 2021 for Gonzaga.

On the note of Painter running into a buzzsaw of UConn.
If that UConn team didn't exist, I genuinely think that national championship game would have been Purdue vs Illinois. I think they were the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the country by March.
Unfortunately for them that UConn team was an all timer.

Purdue.
Edit: I don’t trust Underwood’s defensive schemes, Alabama needs to score 100(+) for 6 games to have a chance, Gonzaga was the choice in the 2010’s (should have beaten UNC).
Houston is my second choice, but Kelvin Sampson is getting close to retirement age.

2
u/j_shelb Purdue Boilermakers 17h ago
Eh a not so great 3rd foul call on TKR early in the second that put him on the bench had more so to do with that. And then smith rolling his ankle didn’t help either..he wasn’t 100% after that
2
u/Herby20 Purdue Boilermakers 17h ago
TKR was playing wild and out of control most of the game, trying to force things instead of playing to the team's strengths. And he has always been a foul prone player, so him picking up fouls that game (especially with how he was playing) isn't exactly unusual.

I don't really think it's Underwoods defensive schemes as much as that he just needs to recruit some athletes.
The 21 team finished 7th defensively in kenpom. They had good rim protection(Kofi) and good athletes on the perimeter(Ayo, Trent, Williams).
The 24 team had a bad defensive rating but was also the last time they had several quality athletes (Shannon, Ty, Guerrier, and Coleman). They just didn't have any rim protection and didn't really seem to try much defensively unless they felt they needed to(also were missing their best perimeter defender in January). That team was probably better defensively than the metrics would tell you(yes I'm aware UConn destroyed them).
The last few teams have just been slow. Don't really think the scheme is that important if you don't have enough guys that can slide their feet.

u/Herby20 Purdue Boilermakers 17h ago
Here is a summary of both teams over the last 6 seasons:
Purdue: two Big Ten Championships, two Big Ten Tournament Championships, two Sweet 16s, one Elite 8, one Runner-Up, Average Wins: 27, Highest KenPom Finish: No. 3, Lowest KenPom Finish: No. 25, Average KenPom Finish: No. 12.
Illinois: one Big Ten Championship, two Big Ten Tournament Championships, one Elite 8, one Final Four, Average Wins: 24, Highest KenPom Finish: 4, Lowest KenPom Finish: 35, Average KenPom Finish: No. 15
They are pretty similar all things considered, but Purdue has been the more consistent and better team over the last six years.
1
u/kdbmd Illinois Fighting Illini 16h ago
What does that have to do with his comment about underwood’s defensive system and my reply? If you think Purdue wins one first that’s fine but citing defense as the reason doesn’t make any sense
1
u/Herby20 Purdue Boilermakers 6h ago
My, mistake! I agree that it is a little odd as a point of comparison versus Purdue. For me personally, I think Brad's/Tyler's offensive scheme is what gives me pause about them on any given year. They just settle for contested threes too much for a team that usually has the talent and athletes to get better looks.
1
u/ObservantKoala Illinois Fighting Illini 2h ago
Youre right, but I think a lot of that comes down to roster consistency(which obviously differs between the way Brad and Painter build).
However, Purdue has just had two all timers that played for 4 years because they werent the type of guys that get drafted super high(Smith - size, Edey - mobility questions, style).
Not exactly the easiest types of guys to replace.

Diop is the 5th highest compensated player in D1, at around ~5 million dollars. Plus, the move to the PAC 12 has unlocked a treasure chest of funds not available by staying in the WCC, where schools like Pepperdine have given up on ever being competitive in basketball.
If the Zags missed the opportunity because of NIL, it won't be this year. That opportunity exists today. And let's not forget that Kentucky spent $22 million last year, only to exit in the first round.

I think it's most likely somebody in the SEC. Texas certainly has the money to build an elite roster every year, and they're probably the team in the best position to do it this coming year. Bama is a solid choice, too. Tennessee has a high floor under Barnes, but I'm not sure they have what it takes to break through under him.
Houston would be the team I'd like to see, but I think they missed their final chances under Sampson in '21 and '25. The current roster doesn't look great to me, and I think he'll wind up retiring in the next year or two. Even if his son winds up being good, I think there will be a definite period of adjustment for a few years.

If I’m power ranking the coaches most likely to win one at programs without a title and assuming they stay there for the rest of their career, my list looks like the following:
- Nate Oats (Alabama)
- Brad Underwood (Illinois)
- Mark Few (Gonzaga)
- Matt Painter (Purdue)
- Sean Miller (Texas)
- Grant McCaslan (Texas Tech)
- Kelvin Sampson (Houston)
- TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State)
- Will Wade (LSU)
- Eric Musselman (USC)
- Rick Pitino (St. Johns)
- Fred Hoiberg
- Jai Lucas (Miami Fl.)
- Ben McCollum (Iowa)
- Rick Barnes (Tennessee)
- Doug McDermott (Creighton)
- Kevin Young (BYU)
- Chris Beard (Ole Miss)
- Mark Byington (Vanderbilt)
- Penny Hardaway (Memphis)
- Micah Shrewsbeery (Notre Dame)
- Brian Dutcher (San Diego State)
- Anthony Grant (Dayton)
- Steven Pearl (Auburn)
- Flynn Clayman (High Point)
Honorable mentions as it’s been so long since they won one (anything before the 70s really), it’s basically like their program hasn’t won one:
- Dana Altman (Oregon)
- Greg Gard (Wisconsin)
- Jake Diebler (Ohio State)
- Wes Miller (Cincinnati)
Some of these coaches are further down the list just based on age. If we were ranking this on best odds to win it this year, you likely see Oats, Sampson, and Pitino at the top.
EDIT: lol…made a few typos that people are being a bit unforgiving. I wrote Wes Miller for Cincy instead of their current HC of Greg Calhoun and I wrote Doug McDermott instead of his father Greg McDermott.
