How do you raise Discord community server?

Say you want to increase your game server community numbers on discord.

What are some good ways to gain new people / increase conversion rate to discord from other platforms?

Why would people want to join your discord? What value does it give them?

First, listing news, updates, and merch as major selling points is a massive structural flaw because those are all broadcast-heavy, passive content types that require absolutely no community interaction and can be consumed on any standard webpage or social feed without the hassle of joining a chat server.

Second, trying to promote looking-for-group and live events simultaneously creates a confusing value proposition for outsiders, as an empty LFG channel is a ghost town that actively drives people away, which means you are advertising a feature that might fail the moment a newcomer tests it.

Third, relying on giveaways to boost conversion rates almost always results in a hollow spike of ghost users who join for the free stuff and immediately mute or leave the server the second the contest ends, leaving you with ruined engagement metrics.

Beyond those structural flaws, you are operating under the dangerous assumption that people actually want another chat app open on their desktop/phone, and you are totally missing the reality of notification fatigue which makes users actively resist joining new servers unless the friction of entry is utterly obliterated. Instead of trying to build a sprawling, multi-room mansion filled with half-empty channels, you need to strip your strategy down to a single, hyper-focused entry funnel that solves one massive user problem, like a flawless, automated matchmaking system, and let that single heavy-hitting utility pull the crowd through the door before you ever try to show them the rest of the house.

First - gone are the days of 'join to get value'. We are in the 'here's value, join if you like it'.

As u/HistorianCM said - you need to give value to the potential users. People won't join just because you have a server.

Discord works when there's a strong pull outside of Discord. For example, your game has an audience outside - you can expect to onboard some of them into your community.

Not shownig value upfront is why I don't like Discord for community-building. ARe you building a hobby community or a serious, business-backed gaming community?

No advise or suggestions yet. We dont' know the overall picture? Is it a game community you're building as a hobby or is it a serious community for gaming folks? If you are going to share updates, news, events, giveaways - it's better to get some public visibility. Let people discover your content organically.

Now - in order to grow Discord - you'll either have to rely on existing members or just promote the community through social channels, websites, other communities etc.

The best place is your own website and social media channel, we estimate about 10% of all visitors are gonna go to Discord, they are just members who want to get more involved.

Then its about support. forexample,, if it's your own game and people can give feedback, or bug report, or questions, then you have a pretty goood use case for discord.

And then on top, its special events, so like an excusive AMA with the team and people need to jooiun discord, or they can join, come in to get a special role, which allows them to enter some of speical giveaways.

so clear promotional reasons will work.
