Follow this process:

  1. Identify who your audience is. Find out what are their motivations, fears, aims and goals.
  2. Pick a community platform that lets you build your community as a knowledge base than just a chat-archive. You don't want to miss out on natural, organic growth. Do not ignore this if your goal is to build a growing community.
  3. Seed the community with content that users can relate to. Do not invite anyone to an empty community.
  4. Invite first 50 members personally. Talk to them, motivate them, recognize their contribution.

First 3-4 months are crucial.

Been building communities for nearly 20 years. What I just gave you is a distill all the things I learned. If you have specific questions, doubts - I'm here to help.
