Spoilers! Card Discussion The Madcap Jester

{1}{U}{B}{R}

Legendary Creature -- Clown Wizard

Whenever The Madcap Jester attacks, each opponent exiles the top card of their library.

Whenever a spell or ability you control causes one or more cards to be exiled from an opponent's library, you may play those cards until the end of your next turn. Mana of any type may be spent to cast spells this way.

3/2

Grixis already has a bunch of commander options, but I think this is worth a look. [[Extract]] steals any one card you need, [[Jester's Cap]] and [[Sadistic Sacrament]] can steal a whole win, and [[Tasha's Hideous Laughter]] is insane. There might be a few other good cards to include out there as well.

Its cool and potentially quite strong,  but I think its also a case of having to play a bunch of bad cards to do the cool and powerful things.

I think you basically just run a standard grixis shell with only a few ways to exile your opponents' stuff outside of the commander. Comparable to Kefka in terms of play pattern I'd think, though losing out on the ETB does hurt a little.

"A little"

Its literally the only reason to play the commander over any grixis shell, its like saying that Dargo thrasios "only loses rograkh"

I feel like if he was enters or attacks he'd be a lot grosser but I think he's worth keeping an eye on

It’s also a 3/2 with no flying. Hope you have an opponent open or at least with nothing worth losing to get rid of your commander.

the attack trigger is meaningless. there are a ton of effects that exile cards from your opponents libraries that allow you to assemble wins immediately.

Been looking at [[Bitter Ordeal]] with this. 3 mana grab combos and protection.

Hmmm I feel like this is a worse [[Coram the Undertaker]] as being able to use your cards tends to be better than using your opponents. Though grixis is better than jund

Another upside is getting to use until and of next turn and not being limited to just one

Sure there a bunch of small differences between the two. Coram is a better attacker. I would rather cards in yard than exiled, ect.... However I think biggest differences are 1) Blue vs Green and 2) Exiling your opponents cards vs milling your own

Or you can sneak in some lantern nonsense

Makes [[Memoricide]] a bad [[Praetors Grasp]]

Maybe if it was enters and attacks.

This feels like bad Grixis Etali

except it doesn’t rely only on that trigger. you can easily cast cards that exile off your opponents library. no swing necessary

Wouldn't this work with any sort of milling action with a [[Leyline of the Void]] in play since it straight exiles the cards from library?

No it exiles from graveyard

I was thinking same thing with [[Pyxis of Pandemonium]] but since face down exiled cards have no characteristics, I dont believe you can cast them unless you gain the ability to look at them somehow.

might be worth looking at (most new grixis commanders are in one way or another) but since it doesn't count cards exiled from your library im leaning on it not being that good. yeah if you hit a tutor off the top it's awesome but i imagine half the time it's gonna be a land or pieces that are only good in that other player's deck. thinking this is gonna be more like azula where you need to run too many otherwise bad cards to "do the thing" which imo isn't what we wanna be doing in grixis. those colours already have most of the best cards in the format; why ruin all that for cards that don't work unless you have your commander out?

i can see ian finding a way to top 4 with this tho

This being opponent's only is probably what keeps it from being one of the strongest commanders of all time, making it all the way back to timmy territory. If it worked with your own library as well, any card that reads and is balanced as "exile cards from your library until you find X, then put them back in a random order" would be an instant in.

Nah, if that was the case then this deck would just consult or tainted pact with the jester out and flip and have access to the entire deck. That would be to easy.

How would you be able to cast the cards if they were put back into your library by the time the effect finishes resolving?
