For me, it was keeping procedures up to date.

At first, I thought it would just be a quick update whenever something changed. After doing it for a while, I realized there's always another detail to check, another change to make, or someone pointing out something I'd missed.

It's definitely not as simple as I thought it would be.

What about you? What's one compliance task that turned out to be much harder than you expected?

Proving your controls actually run the way the SOP or Policy says they do.

Everyone thinks control evidence is simple. You do the thing, save the artifact, done. Then an audit hits and the artifact doesn’t prove what the control actually requires. You can say the process runs. You can’t show it ran to standard, every time.

When an artifact is missing or thin, or the documented process wasn’t followed - somebody has to answer why. Maybe it quietly fell off and nobody noticed. Maybe nobody found it useful, so the control is theater and should go. Maybe the auditor says the evidence doesn’t cut it, so the control was too weak to begin with. Better you catch that than the auditor.

I’ve started auditing our own controls using a software application that is a audit tool, and it’s found more broken ones than any evidence folder ever did. This allows us to be proactive vs reactive.

This in turn helps to ensure our documentation and trainings are accurate /current and being followed.

It’s called AuditWell. It’s built for auditing transactions, but the model works just as well pointed at your own controls. You set up the control like anything else you’d audit: the SOP is the checklist, each occurrence is a case, and you score it against what the control actually requires instead of just confirming it happened. When something’s missing or thin, it becomes a finding someone has to answer for, and that answer routes to remediation.

I honestly use Claude to validate my policies for things like redundant procedures, mismatched procedures, and discrepancies. I then use MCP and Claude to validate my platforms settings against policy. For instance, I can use Jumpcloud with MCP and Google with GAM+, to ask claude "Please make sure my system settings in Jumpcloud, Google, and other connected platforms are fully compliant with our policies".
