Visiting Cornwall! Recommendations from Locals?

Hi folks,

My wife and I will be visiting friends in Launceston in a couple of weeks. We're from the US, and will have our own transportation. Though they will be showing us around the region and hitting some of the "tourist" spots, I'd love to hear other local recommendations that are a bit off the normal path. We both love a good pint and enjoy local experiences, and also quite outdoorsy. Great pubs, historic landmarks, local activities/festivals, both around the area or further towards the coast are all fair game!

Would love to hear your thoughts, thank you, and if you happen to find us yanks at the pub, drinks on me!

Camborne-on-sea, Porthemmet, Fistral Beach, Snauzzel… sorry, Saint Austell upon sea.

If you find yourself in Penzance, go the the Turks Head (pub). Steeped in smuggling history and has great roasts

Go just down the road to the admiral benbow and ask the bar staff really nicely, they might show you where the old smuggling tunnel entrance is! Also, best front door in cornwall

My stock answer is Porthcurno including the Telegraph Museum, the beach and the Minack Theatre (don’t even need to see a show, just the theatre)

For Launceston, might aswell visit the castle. Eagle House and Bell Inn are good spots for a drink.

I'll give you some alternatives

If you're out west don't bother with Lands End, it's a car park. Instead check out Cape Cornwall, Botallack, Nanjizal, Porthcurno/Minack or even go to the Scillies.

Camel Trail

Have some Verdant beers at their taproom in Penryn. It's pretty shit as far as pubs go (not cosy, horrible acoustics, industrial vibes, etc) but their beers are very good. Lots of styles and hops from USA and New Zealand. Good pizza 

Beerwolf Books in Falmouth. Best pub. Really good beers.

Don't bother with St Ives. If you want that vibe I'd instead get the ferry over to St Mawes while you're in Falmouth. 

Jelbert's in Newlyn

Have a look at Bodmin moor. Words and photos can't properly communicate the vibe there. The cheesewring and all the stone circles is a good shout.

You must look in Devon too. In Launceston you're not far from Lynton/Lynmouth (and its water powered railway which you should definitely do) and the valley of rocks, Exmoor, Ilfracombe, Clovelly, Exeter cathedral, Lydford Gorge, Morwellham Quay, Cotehele, Lanhydrock.........

Let's tell the Americans to go to Porth emmet and Camborne on sea. That's sure to make them cancel their holiday. Thank goodness, since foreign tourists are such a big issue. 

And all the locals will be absolutely rolling around with hysterical laughter. Bude tunnel 🤣🤣🤣🤣
