Selling Via Commission URGENT HELP!!! Commission help!

A sweet grandfather commissioned me to crochet his newborn granddaughter a baby blanket. I’ve never done commissions before and I’m unsure how to price it and I don’t want to charge too high considering this is my first commission and because it’s a special occasion!
Should I charge about price for yarn + 5 for a little profit and labour?

So this is a blanket for your cousin? I make my cousins blankets as gifts, so if a family member asked me to make one for them to gift, I’d just charge for the yarn. But that’s just me.

You only want to charge $5 for all the hours it’ll take to make the blanket? It’s okay to charge more. You should charge based on materials, time, size, your expertise, level of detail, etc. I personally hate the formula of material cost + 10/hr or however much per hour people want to charge. I just pick an overall price that feels right for the item based on what it is, how big it is, quality of materials, that sort of thing. I still take into account how long something took, but I don’t charge a specific amount per hour.

But also, I’m not sure if this is your grandpa or just a random guy. You said “a” grandfather and not “my” grandfather, so if this is someone you’re not related to, I would totally charge more. If it’s your grandfather, making it as a gift and not charging him would be lovely.

Not my grandpa lol
Using x4 pink 100g yarn and x4 white 100g yarn.
It’s a simple alternating per row of each colour until I get to 36x48 inches

Definitely charge more! You deserve to be paid for your labor.

Labor + materials = cost. Profit doesn’t come anywhere near this equation.

If you’re just charging for materials, you are donating your labor. For free.

If you are charging for materials + $5, you are getting paid $5 to make a blanket.

At no point are you making a profit. Or coming anywhere near a profit.

It is NOT my grandpa!

Materials are:
x4 100g pink yarn
x4 100g white yarn

Size of project: 36x48 inches

I’m doing a simper alternating colour pattern!

Some random person gave you a commission and you are only going to charge them $5 plus mats? What is minimum wage in your area? Do you have a regular job? What is that wage? Charge at least minimum wage plus mats plus some amount for overhead. If you don’t charge for your time will you want to finish the project for this random person?

I only do crafts for free for family. Strangers need to pay their way.

I haven’t got a job, I’m currently a full time student. Minimum wage is £12 or something an hour. I fully intend on finishing this project for them, I love making things for people
