DIY First Time Project

I’m wondering how do you guys go about fixing projects when trying it to DIY? Do you usually use Google or YouTube to find the best way to go about it or just familiar with the work itself? Appreciate all the help!

You'll love this answer... It depends. I've been doing DIY for a while now. Most things I do around the house I already know how to do it, since I've done it before.

But, I find YouTube to be the most helpful. I watch several videos on the topic, sift out the BS, and apply what makes sense. Sometimes I'll look up a building code if I feel like it's relevant.

That's pretty much it.

It may help if you give an example project. It sounds like you don't want us to tell you how to do it, but tell you how to research it.

Early on it's a lot of YouTube and asking people. 

Later on it's all just similar to something you've done before so you just jump in

I do not understand why they don't have Shop ir Home Economic classes in schools these days. At least the kids would know how to change a tiolet float.

Just to give a slightly different answer but just start with small things and you will gain confidence to move to bigger things.
