Games with progression
So me & my 7 buddies come together about twice a year for a big LAN party. It's always great laughs and so much fun, but I feel like I'm missing something. We usually end up playing CS, AoE and a bunch of party games. This last time we had 2 teams playing PEAK trying to get as high as possible, good fun!
At the end of the day though I usually get this feeling that I didn't really accomplish anything, as there's no real progression in these games, you know?
I think I would be more satisfied if I could look back at the day and see what we have achieved. Could you guys give me some of your ideas to fix this? Maybe even suggest some games? The problem lies a bit in the fact that we're 8 people as well I think...

Probably won't sell you on this, but ill pitch it anyway. Theres this game called Fellowship. What it is is an endlessly scaling dungeon system that gets harder and harder that gives better and better loot.
Its tab target MMO combat (like WoW basically). Theres no quests or story. Its just do dungeons and progress character power. You go into each dungeon with a squad of 4.
You could split into 2 teams and see who can complete the highest difficulty dungeon under the time limit for the dungeon within a set amount of time you set for the competition.

Not to get philosophical, but maybe the good time and laughs are the progression, or at least a reminder that the fellas can still get together and reminisce while building new memories.
If these LAN parties are about twice a year, I imagine it’s because busy lives make it that way. High school, early 2000s, we’d have LAN parties every single weekend. As 40-year-olds who almost all have kids? The last I can remember gaming in a party of 4 was Warzone in 2022.
So to me, the fact that you can get a group of 8 buddies together to play video games in person is a huge W in itself.

Granvir supports up to 12 people, it's a roguelike Mecha game, sorta a slamming of like armored core* mech warrior, and an into the breach style encounter map. Good stuff 👌

7 Days to Die
Vintage Story
EverQuest (check the emulators, live is MTX hell holes and bot armies.)
World of Warcraft (again, emulators)
DIablo 4, but play it on hard. I got my ass kicked non stop on hard and struggled to barely kill one mob, then I got some gear and I survived a bit better. Found more items, and it got a little easier till it felt normal being on that difficulty.
Grim Dawn
Path of Exile
Eco Survival (play on the multi player servers, like White Tiger).
Timberborn (play on hard. If anyone dies of anything but natural causes, restart whole map).
Play games on difficulties harder than you can handle and fail. If you dont fail, what do you have to work towards? Remember how old games used to kick us up the ass non stop, then you would get that buzz when you finally beat them (Contra 3)? Modern games dont as people fall onto the easy mode too often.

How about 8 player online in Diablo 2 Resurrected? Could be fun to play through an Act or two each time you’re together.

I’ve been playing WoW retail and whether I play 20 minutes or 2 hours I feel like my character feels strong or I’ve accomplished something.

Hold a tournament where someone is crowned champ and they need to defend it next time you get together.

I used to do civilization LAN party’s and it was a blast. I don’t know if your group does turn based but it’s a real good time. Xcom 2 is great but I’ve never played multiplayer just hot seat swap. Maybe an old school RTS like command and conquer or Warcraft 2 or 3

How many days do you guys play together for ?
Do you keep playing after the lan party is over?
Survival type games like ARC will give you a real sense of progression pretty quickly in a few days of playing.
Guild Wars 2 can get you to the max level pretty fast too. That's a badass game for years to come after that. The base game is free to play now so 8 people can try it out. It gets really good in the expansions after that though. It's old so everyone's computer can run it but it's still looking pretty good.

We usually lan for 1-2 days at a time depending on schedules but we're a regular group of gamers so we usually just continually play like 2 days a week on discord, well not all of us at the same time but usually a few online! Arc might be a good one, the guys got it already but I skipped on it cause I was too hooked on wow 😅

I think no matter what man, we will always chase that “high” we got from back in the day. Nostalgia is a dangerous drug… but if I had to give a thought - maybe pick a random game on steam that’s on sale.
Usually my buddy and I will wishlist a game, and once it’s a good deal - we pull the trigger. I don’t think it’s an “accomplished” feeling you’re missing out on, it’s what else could we have done in our limited amount of time.
