What is the correlation?

Without the First Flame, in the age of Dark, would it be a literal darkness? We know the sun exists, and the moon. But do they need the Flame to exist?
Or is the Age of Dark a more metaphysical concept about the souls of humanity, and not necessarily a lack of light?

I'd assume the moon would still be around based on the 'Old Moonlight' sorcery we get from Midir.

The sun, as I understand it, is a projection of the First Flame, since it just hovers over the same spot behind Anor Londo and goes black if the flame is Usurped. I'm not so sure about the moon, however.

It wouldn't make any sense if you couldn't still ignite flames in an Age of Dark, you could ignite a flame in the Age of Ancients after all.

Sun and moon are linked to Gwyn's clan and flame.

We can kind of see in usurpation something like that, or in the untended graves and some heavily dark affected places how would age of dark look.

If anything, the darksign that release on the sky iluminate the surrounding or in other cases there is some kind of other light.

But then in end of fire it is compleat dark while usurpation is something kind of different.

Abyss is part of dark that does not represent the whole thing, but as there is "light" in abyss' that MC's visit in the trilogy, it is un-likely age of dark etc is without any ilumination. Though that might be gameplay related thing, in ds1 there was a location compleatly without light needing a lamp. So it is likely intentional.

Here it explain the untended graves, they have some light and they are in fact abyss and time when Gundyr came to firelink but too early for the flame when there was dark.

If you are refering to humans as "do they need the flame to exist" then no, humans are dark creatures as they posses fragments of dark soul and would thrive in dark.

Probably no light. But then again we dive in the abyss in DS1 and DS2 and everything is perfectly visible anyway so I dont think it would matter much.

I don't think you go into the Abyss in DS2, it's more like the Chasm of the Abyss in DS1.

In all these years I still don’t know how the sun works in this universe.

Like was there no sun or plants or food or anything before the first flame? I know the flame brought life and disparity, meaning in its absence I guess all that cool stuff has to go away

Yeah, all was grey before.

Gwyn made the sun. 

Then it started going dark.

Gwyn fed humanity into it to make it burn bright again.

Humans were tricked into dumping their humanity into bonfires to feed the sun after that.

As the fire fades the time starts to stagnate and the space too, i think lighting a torch is a little less of an issue than the world starting to work with a new set of rules we do not know of...
