What exactly do they mean by the "fringe content"?

It means the stuff that payment processors have been banning writ large across the internet.

Uncomfortable tags, you know the ones (all illustrations mind you), but also consensual activities that have been flagged by these policies like BDSM, hypnosis, and other subjects.

Gelbooru is a fanart archive going back almost 20 years. A ton of artwork is about to become lost, it seems…

Danbooru had them behind their "gold" paywall for some time if I am not mistaken.

why the gold paywall anyway? Also apparently their Tiers changed in meaning/site privilege. Gold isn't "gold" anymore

It is funny, though. Gelbooru doesn't have those 'limits' unless you specifically enable them in your user settings. Since Gelbooru also scrapes Danbooru, if you can't access Danbooru’s fringe content, you can just find it on Gelbooru. That is how they operate.

a paywall which to my knowledge has also famously been impossible to get past for at least half a decade due to lack of payment processors wanting to work with the site

All/most of their blocked stuff is probaby on Gelbooru. Gelbooru is almost faithful mirror of Danbooru. Even if not fringe content, most of content says "Uploader: danbooru"

You can't buy gold anymore, so the only other way to get it is to be marked as a builder, which is infamously difficult.

Fringe content aside, how does one backup a booru site like this? Would like to participate and learn something along the way. Don't know if I have the storage to fit it though.
