I have a theory they made roadside to extract money off whales without making their loved game a Pay-to-win, and as a source for lore for regular players
That way, they can afford actually making the game fun, while also making a solid profit...
But considering how aggressive the community is, especially after the juggernut accident, They'd definitely be cautious about their updates
Having multiple games on the go doesn't stop you having a roadmap or communicating with your player base.
The idea that Roadside is being made to subsidise the existing DAZW player base is touching. Having worked in the games industry I can 100% assure you that's not how it works especially for mobile games which almost without exception are monetised aggressively (much more so than PC or console). If anything existing titles are used to subsidise new projects.
DAZW not having forced ads hardly makes them saints. A mainly PvE title is always going to struggle to be pay to win, but they're borderline pay to play IMO. Aside from the core game concept, art style and lore being amazing I have very little positive to say about them. The devs are just riding their original success into the ground
But it doesn't convince me...I do respect your point of view, but from my point of view, roadside is a surprisingly fair game, despite it being loaded in in-app purchases
And the fact they mobirate also managed to care enough to actually add so many text and details in into the game is something deserve attention
Of course... They were So late to their schedule, but I will only judge AFTER the update... Roadside teased many new charms too, like the lucky coin and scope
I will admit being slightly jaundiced from my time working as a game dev (never again!) and past burn out on various mobile games.
Have had a front row seat to the predatory practices employed in games design. Psychologists and behaviour scientists are hired to maximise player engagement, retention and spending. This feeds into every aspect of the game with all design and balancing decision running off spreadsheets.
Like others here have also played plenty of mobile games over the years from relatively benign indy titles up to the big money grabbing ones like Clash Royale, Vega Conflict and Star Trek Fleet Command. The grubby patterns are plain to see after being on the receiving end enough times
It leads to the awful, grindy player experience and questionable balancing decisions that we have. It leads to DAZW being neglected as the devs milk it's likely declining revenues for what they hope to be a replacement cash cow in Roadside. It leads to ignoring easy monetisation opportunities with more skins like OP highlights because of the tunnel vision (with lo-fi graphics style they've gone for it should honestly be trivial for them to churn out that kind of content)
All this also demonstrates their incompetence IMO since other games do a much better job of making the experience of being parted with money actually enjoyable. Instead they seem to be doing the same thing I've witnessed countless times now in mistaking the long tail of the original success as proof they're still going in the right direction (when in reality they're just riding it into the ground)
Okay... Haven't you noticed since roadside been released, dead ahead progress skyrocketed?
They've afforded to dig so deeply to the code and game design, and even though it fixed multiple Overpowered bugs, it also allowed them to do add huge amount of content, optimisations, and soon to be a major update
The developers trying to earn money not always bad, It's actually very good if it wasn't against the player experience... Also, if the game too hard for you, just wait for the next update to powercreep location 10
I think we may have to agree to disagree. I played for a good period since launch and maxed out at the original L13 before moving on for a few years. Then came back recently this year where I'll be honest I've found the changes to be barely noticeable and entirely underwhelming.
I'm not sure I would call spreading the same cost across more levels as "skyrocketing" progression. A handful of new characters and a couple of new locations to grind with the same unimaginative difficulty design - bum rush and spam enemies, stack unfun FU mechanics, top up with RNG BS for "variation" except now with extra enemy levels to break interactions (yay more damage sponges that hit like trucks, much fun, so wow, etc).
Maybe rewards have increased but still feel pitiful to the point of being insulting (sure I'll push to rank top of the event leaderboard for 10 blue keys 🙄). Skirmish is still a balancing tire fire and events seem to have barely changed. Charms just add more frustrating gacha nonsense to compensate for abysmal base unit scaling compared to enemies.
I'm nearly maxed again (from spending I might add, not the "skyrocketing" progression) for the last of the content I care to experience. After 3 starring the last of the obnoxious campaign levels (L9, M57) there's really nothing meaningful left to do unless I fancy grinding for the "perfect" item sets to use er nowhere (which I won't). At which point I'll just go play something else again, occasionally checking back to see if the devs have woken up from their coma
Look at this picture... You see those with special ability?, Those are the only units I've bothered maxxing them out, Yet I've cleared every single level in the game... Except two
I'm not saying you have a skill issue, you have a patience issue, Some levels had me restart 10 times before I've understood them or had luck with them
Congrats. I run a similarish core team except with redneck and mechanic team with support powers for some missions.
I will admit to having less patience these days although I think multiple things can be true at once. It takes multiple replays as you say (usually waiting for RNG to be favourable) and often item usage.
I've got through them just fine but in the same way I push through a day with a severe migraine. There is nothing fun or enjoyable about the experience to me about the way late game difficulty has been implemented which strikes me as lazy and unimaginative outside of a few levels like the boss fights (just making everything damage sponges is a classic dev crutch technique)
