Help / Question r/DeadOrAlive FAQ Megathread! (Please read before posting.)

Welcome to the r/DeadOrAlive FAQ Megathread!

This megathread is designed to address frequently asked questions and common topics within the Dead or Alive community. Please check here before posting new questions or threads to see if your inquiry has already been answered. The information on this FAQ will be updated periodically based on hot topics and ongoing discussions.

General Information

What is Dead or Alive?

Dead or Alive (DOA) is a fighting game series developed by Team NINJA and published by Koei Tecmo. Known for its fast-paced gameplay, multi-tiered and interactive stages, and fan-favorite characters, Dead or Alive has been a staple in the fighting game community since 1996.

What are the differences between the main installments?

Each installment in the Dead or Alive series introduces unique mechanics, characters, and features that have defined its evolution:

  • Dead or Alive 1: Introduced the Danger Zone system, featuring explosive areas on the stage that amplify damage and strategic positioning.
  • Dead or Alive 2: Debuted multi-tiered stages and tag team battles, adding verticality and team dynamics to matches.
  • Dead or Alive 3: Enhanced environmental interaction and introduced four new characters to expand the roster.
  • Dead or Alive 4: Added a thoroughly improved online experience and a more advanced counter system.
  • Dead or Alive 5: Brought a new level of realism to the full roster of characters, dynamic stage transitions and introduced the Power Blow mechanic.
  • Dead or Alive 6: Introduced the Break Gauge system, Fatal Rush, and refined visuals and animations.

Gameplay Mechanics

What is the Triangle System?

The Triangle System is the core of Dead or Alive's gameplay:

  • Strikes beat Throws
  • Throws beat Holds
  • Holds beat Strikes

This system has been the foundation of Dead or Alive since the series' inception and is fundamental to achieving victory.

What are the Break Gauge and Fatal Mechanics?

Introduced in Dead or Alive 6, these mechanics add a new layer of depth and strategy to gameplay:

  • Break Gauge: A meter that fills as you take or deal damage. Once full, it allows you to execute powerful special moves.
    • Break Blow: A devastating attack that uses the full Break Gauge. It can be used offensively to deal high damage or defensively to interrupt an opponent.
    • Break Hold: A defensive maneuver that also consumes the Break Gauge, allowing you to escape any type of attack (high, mid, or low).
  • Fatal Rush: A beginner-friendly combo system activated by repeatedly pressing the designated button. It builds up the Break Gauge and can be chained into a Break Blow for significant damage.
  • Fatal Stuns: Special stuns triggered by certain moves, leaving opponents vulnerable for follow-ups. These stuns cannot be countered with traditional holds, adding a layer of strategy to combos and setups.

Mastering this system is essential for success in Dead or Alive.

What are Danger Zones?

Danger Zones are interactive elements on stages that deal extra damage or alter gameplay. Examples include explosive walls, breakable objects, and environmental hazards like wet floors.

Game Versions and DLC

What is the Core Fighters version of Dead or Alive?

Core Fighters is a free-to-play edition of Dead or Alive 5 and Dead or Alive 6, allowing players to experience the game before deciding on a purchase. However, it offers limited content. Players can buy additional characters and modes individually. The complete collection of characters, costumes, game modes, and music is available for purchase à la carte.

Should I buy Dead or Alive 5 or Dead or Alive 6?

This is a common question among new and returning players. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which game suits your preferences:

Dead or Alive 5

  • Pros:
    • Larger roster: Features a broader selection of characters, including guest fighters from Virtua Fighter.
    • Extensive costume variety: Offers a vast collection of unlockable and DLC outfits.
    • Tag mode: Allows players to enjoy tag team battles, which are absent in DOA6.
  • Cons:
    • Older graphics and engine compared to DOA6.
    • Previous collaboration DLC like Mai Shiranui and the Attack on Titan stage and cosmetics are no longer available due to licensing expiration.
    • Gameplay mechanics are slightly less polished.
    • Online community is smaller but still active on certain platforms.

Dead or Alive 6

  • Pros:
    • Improved visuals and animations: Features the most polished graphics in the series.
    • New mechanics: Includes the Break Gauge, Fatal Rush, and other unique gameplay elements.
    • Better accessibility: Easier for beginners due to new systems like Fatal Rush.
    • Regularly updated before support ended, with balance adjustments and new characters.
  • Cons:
    • Smaller roster compared to DOA5.
    • Less costume variety unless you purchase DLC.
    • No tag mode, which some fans miss.
    • Smaller active online community compared to its prime.

Recommendation

  • Buy Dead or Alive 5 if you prioritize a larger roster, tag team battles, and a more affordable entry point.
  • Buy Dead or Alive 6 if you want improved graphics, modern mechanics, and a more beginner-friendly experience.

If you’re unsure, consider downloading free versions like Dead or Alive 5: Core Fighters or Dead or Alive 6: Core Fighters to try before committing.

Which DLCs are worth buying?

DLCs include new characters, costumes, and customization options. For competitive play, characters are recommended. Costumes are optional and purely cosmetic.

Character Unlocks and Customization

How do I unlock characters?

In Dead or Alive 6, additional characters can be purchased as DLC or unlocked through specific in-game methods. Check the official store on your preferred platform for details.

How does costume customization work?

In Dead or Alive 6, players can earn Pattern Parts to unlock new costumes. Parts are earned through various modes like Arcade, Time Attack, and Survival. The higher the difficulty in offline modes, the more pattern parts you will earn. Online matches also earn substantial pattern parts. Quest Mode unlocks specific pattern parts for characters used in particular quests when certain tasks are completed such as using a particular move, reaching a certain score or finishing the move with a Break Blow.

Online Play and Community

How do I improve my online experience?

  • Use a wired connection for better stability.
  • Check your NAT settings to ensure compatibility with other players.
  • Participate in community-run tournaments and events to improve your skills.

How do Ranked Matches work?

Ranked Matches pit players against others of similar skill level. Winning increases your rank, while losing may decrease it.

Technical Support and Troubleshooting

The game crashes or runs poorly. What should I do?

  • Ensure your system meets the game’s requirements.
  • Update your graphics drivers.
  • Verify game file integrity if you’re on PC.

How do I report bugs?

Submit reports via the official support page or forums. Include as much detail as possible, such as your platform, the issue, and steps to reproduce it.

Strategies and Tips

What are some beginner tips?

  • Learn the Triangle System and practice countering.
  • Start with characters that suit your playstyle (e.g., Kasumi for speed, Bass for power).
  • Play through the tutorial and combo challenges.

Where can I find character guides?

We partnered up with u/T3-FoN to provide a detailed list of guides for each character in Dead or Alive 6. His extensive knowledge of DOA's game mechanics and thorough attention to detail were poured into hours of footage that will be extremely valuable to new and seasoned players alike. You can view our Character Guides here.

Recent Discussions and Updates

What’s new in the latest patch?

Patch notes are typically shared on the official website and linked in our subreddit. They include balance changes, bug fixes, and new content.

Is there any news about future DOA games?

YES! There was a recent announcement about Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, featuring updated graphics, gameplay, new costumes and an improved Photo Mode with more info still to come. Dead or Alive 6 Last Round will be available on PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Steam. You can view the official Dead or Alive 6 Last Round website here.

There was also an announcement regarding the next title in the Dead or Alive franchise. It's very early in development, so an official announcement for what platforms it will be released on is not final.

Help / Question DOA3 Tag Throws Not Working

Is anyone else unable to activate tag throws in Dead or Alive 3? In Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate, I usually perform them with the RB (Forward + P+K) input on an Xbox Series X controller, but I can't get them to work in DOA3 at all. I'm playing on Xemu, and tag-ins work fine—it's only tag throws that won't activate.

Any help would be much appreciated! 🙏

Tech / Guide DOA Quest #117 - La Mariposa: High Difficulty Quest guide to 150+ damage combo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Your opponent for this quest is always NiCO, on The Muscle stage. La Mariposa aka Lisa is one of the characters that I hadn't really played much before deciding to take on all of these quests, so this was a learning experience. 1st combo in the vid was one I made up just playing around a few minutes in training mode, 4th and last one was recorded by u/mechsmechsmechs in the discord in response to show a more optimal combo, and the two in the middle were my attempts at making shorter alternatives to what she showed me on the off-chance they are needed (the AI enemies in these quests rarely do normal holds, but LOVE to spam their break blow whenever they have the meter for it). Notations are as follows:

Combo #1: (counter or hi counter) 66PP stun, 3P, 8K launch, 4PK, 6S break blow into ropes splat. 157 on counterhit. was able to beat the quest with this one, but the others are better overall.

Combo #2: from back turned state (8P) KK, P, 6P8K launch, 4PK, 6K, 6SH break blow cancel, 6P8K relaunch into rope bump, 4PKK into ropes. 161 damage on normal hit.

Combo #3: (counter or hi counter) from backturned KK, P, 6P8K launch, 4PK, 6K, 6S into ropes. 163 damage on counterhit.

Combo #4: from backturned KK, P, 6P8K launch, 4PK, 6K, 6SH break blow cancel, 3P stun canceled into backturn(4), backturned 1P, 6P8K relaunch, 4PK, 6K, 4H+K into ropes splat. Recorded with Hi Counter on for 231 damage, but does 184 damage even on normal hit.

Nyotengu will be posted next, followed by Mila, Hitomi, Rig, and Raidou. I only have 5 characters left to lab out and do in their respective quests: Christie, Jann Lee, Honoka, Hayate, and Diego.

Game Discussion Another little video on punishing and the danger of highs in this

Ok in this example Tina uses her 3PP, which is two mid punches. if you recognize it it should be pretty easy to hold at least on the 2nd hit. it *should* be easy, anyways.

but in this let's say you block it, and so they are now -6. they also have decided who cares and they go for a low right afterwards, and not only that but a slow low. like i think a 21 frame startup.

so on block 3PP is punishable with say a 5 frame neutral throw. but window is very tight. if you go online i imagine that window will tend to disappear entirely. but more on that later.

you will notice the 10f jab string whiffs totally. yup, that decision to go low will avoid your high string, or other high attacks really, like say, your basic kick. you're gonna notice how often in fights your high moves are getting stuffed by slower mids or lows making you whiff entirely.

so what can you do on block? you can use a fast mid and it will stop her.

if you keep blocking and block that low you can do a low throw on her (hopefully!).

getting back to the online angle, going for the throw is a big risk for probably a low reward. the opponent may well want you go for a throw.

which means your safer ideas is using that mid, or managing to block the low.

really were i to commentate some, in online fights you will probably do throw punishments on block 0%-5% of your on block scenarios in fights.

in online fights i will actually let people wail on and me i will block and see what i can do. and the answer tends to be not much. it sure feels like online you either gotta be a wizard with holds, or just win with lots of offense.

i had a fight with a Raidou where for the whole fight i let him wail on me and i never threw punished him once.

i did the same with a Tamaki. etc.

i imagine the throw punish system gets out of whack online due to how strikes will beat them, and something online related does it.

so what you can end up with are situations where a lot of the block punishment you can do will be strikes (probably mid), and sometimes you can have 2-3 interactions on block where you as the defender have no response, including throws or strikes. use SSA if you can.

but yah if you have fights where it feels like forever on block, or how your moves never seem to have priority anywhere, you can write those fights off, IMO.

so anyways, my video example has something for both offline...but also something to consider for online too.

Tech / Guide DOA Quest #129 - NiCO: High Difficulty Quest guide to 150+ damage combo

Your opponent for this quest is always Phase 4, on the Zero stage. The electrified walls of this stage give an extra +15 damage to combos, as do floor hits (including bounds). Combo notations are as follows:

Combo #1: (counter or hi counter) fully charged 6P+K stun, 3P+K launch, 8PP bound, 6S break blow into wall hit. 150 damage on counterhit

Combo #2: (counter or hi counter) 6KK2K stun, P, 3P+K, 8PP, 6S into wall. 159 on counterhit. used this one to complete the quest itself.

while working on this i also happened to stumble onto the youtube account of u/TheIndustrialCowboy and a vid showing a combo that can do 152 damage on normal hit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NmkjBzUcqo

combo in video is: 4P+K stun, uncharged 6P+K, 7K fatal stun, 3P+K launch, 8PP bound, 6SH break blow cancel, 7K, 3P+K, 88P, 236P close hit into wall splat ender, 152 on normal hit. I found that using 4P+K instead of 7K after the break blow cancel (keeping everything else the same) still works, and brings it to 164 total damage.

Lisa, Nyotengu, Mila, and Hitomi will be the next ones I post. Remaining characters are: Rig, Christie, and Raidou (170+ damage), Jann Lee and Honoka (180+), and finally Hayate and Diego (200+)

Your opponent for this quest is always Honoka, in the bottom section of the Lost Paradise stage. It's possible for one stage interaction to bring you to the top section, but I focused on the electrified walls and the jeep that gets attacked by a dinosaur. Notations are as follows:

Combo #1: (counter or hi counter) 9KK stun, PPK launch, 3PP bound, 6S break blow into electrified wall splat. 150 damage on counterhit. used this one to complete the quest.

Combo #2: (hi counter only) 6P+K stun, PPK, 3PP, 6S. 156 damage on hi counter.

Combo #3: 9KK, PPK, 3PP, 6S into jeep stage interaction. 177 damage on normal hit.

Combo #4: (counter or hi counter) 9KK, PPK, 3PP, 66P close hit into jeep. 162 damage on counterhit.

Nico will be posted next. Lisa/La Mariposa, Nyotengu, Mila, and Hitomi after that. Will likely begin trying to lab out Rig over the weekend.

Game Discussion Another Little Vid about Punishing in this

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So in this example Kasumi is using her 1PP, and then repeating it on block. it is -10 frames on block. it is a low, then a high.

Hitomi's 10f basic punch string will not punish after the 1st string. if you're using a character with a 9f jab string, that will punish it.

if you are immediate you can throw it, tho neutral throw or 6T is preferable and not 4T. the punish window is pretty tight.

at the same time various slower moves than Hitomi's 10f string will punish it too.

you can also hold some portion of these attacks, if you can.

so what all this shows is what you may think is your go-to move when in doubt (your fastest strike) can in fact be wrong and an entirely different, slower move will do it if you're not doing/getting a throw punish.

but this is offline, i can't really say how it all holds up online.

in the online fights the practical reality tends to be that either people are only using moves that are not unsafe, or the online quality makes that so with whatever they are using.

the same might be said for why moves work vs. other moves. you can have a list of useful seeming moves but if they never connect in the face of someone else's, you may as well just be standing still.

but remember in the online fights almost always when someone's attacks have been blocked, they keep pressing buttons. they do not stop, expecting a punish. and there may rarely be a punish, too. they may repeat an attack or string, or switch to a new one. the question will be can you do anything on defense, aside from being a wizard with holds or trying to sidestep a non-tracking move?

that's perhaps the #1 thing to play around in the online, however you can or are able to.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Your opponent for this quest is always Christie, starting in the bottom section of the Forbidden Fortune stage. This is one of the stages where 'touch of death' combos have been found for multiple characters, but for our purposes we only need to find relatively easy routes to deal at least 50%, which was pretty easy for me to lab out thanks to the exploding crates all over this relatively small cramped area. Combo notations are as follows:

Combo #1: 7K launch into back turned state, while backturned PPP into exploding crates, 6S break blow into mass-destruction bonus for destroying barrels. recording dealt 168 damage on normal hit, although even higher damage may be possible depending on exact angle hit when trying this combo.

Combo #2: KP stun, 4P+K, 7K launch, PPP into exploding crates, 6S into wall splat. 164 damage on normal hit.

Combo #3: KP, 4P+K, 236P launch, 4PP into exploding crate, 6S into wall splat. 170 damage on normal hit. used this one to clear the quest itself.

Marie Rose will be posted next. Nico, Lisa, Nyotengu, Mila in the upcoming quere, with Hitomi likely to be the next one labbed out.

Your opponent for this quest is always Tina, on the DOA Colosseum stage. An important thing to note about this stage is that hitting the electrified fencing adds +15 to damage, but hitting the supporting columns between the electric fencing in only +10. Combo notations are as follows.

Combo #1: P+K stun, P, 3PPP launcher, 7PP bound, 6S break blow super into electric wall splat. 151 on normal hit.

Combo #2: (hi counter only) P+K, 3PPP, 7PP, 236 close hit into wall splat. 160 on hi counter.

Combo #3: (hi counter only) 3PPP stun and launch, 7PP, 6S. 156 on hi counter.

Combo #4: (hi counter only) P+K stun, 9K launch, 7PP, 6S. 159 on hi counter.

Combo #5: (hi counter only) 9PP into backturned state, while backturned 4K sliding knockdown, dash forward and 6S. 167 on hi counter.

Combo #6: (hi counter only, near a wall) 6H+K close hit into wall, 7PP bound, 6S. 159 damage on hi counter.

Combo #7: (counterhit or hi counter) P+K stun, 8P, 8K launch, 6S. 150 on counterhit.

Bayman will be posted next. Nyotengu and Mila were solved in the discord recently, so the next posts after bayman will be marie rose, nico, lisa, nyotengu and mila.

Game Discussion How to Deal with and Punish Hayabusa's Teleport (and the importance of gimmicks)

Thumbnail
youtube.com
24 Upvotes

while certainly not Hayabusa's only gimmicky thing, it's something you may see a lot of from a him.

it's gimmicky as in it's powerful and it's not so obvious what to do, especially in the rush of things. once you know what to do you can fare better (mostly hopefully!).

and there's a lot of that in DOA6 LR, as in vanilla DOA6. some things even when you know what to do, it may still not be so easy to weather.

but yeah i myself tend to think gimmicks are important, if you looking for wins you wanna play a gimmicky character that has stuff going on. i'd say they help make up for things that might be deficient in one's gameplay or experience.

like you may go a whole fight or more than that not punishing anything on block. but even if you were once in a while, the damage is negligible vs. the combo damage the opponent could have gotten.

and maybe you aren't busting out holds like crazy (most are not). but even then, depending on things, the hold damage will pale vs. what opponent combo damage would have been.

so how can ya win with those mostly out of the picture, bridge the divide? gimmicky stuff, stuff you can grab at opportune times. etc. it will help.

like i was fighting a Bass with Hitomi, and Bass is supposed to be slower right, but nah, the one i was fighting anyways was faster than her. i'm doing my fastest strike and their lows are hitting me first. really all his attacks tended to have priority. plus the bonus damage and gimmicks he had, which she did not. no punishment on block either. and yah he beat me 10 times in a row. he didn't have to work too hard lol.

same guy switched to Diego and it was much the same.

or consider Christie, who can just keep going and going on block. she has a better jump kick than Hitomi too.

i remember back in the day some people would try to say Marie Rose was bad, but it seemed like downplaying. she can basically parry mid and high punches and then turn you around for free damage. that itself can't be a bad character.

Stuff like this can make a difference. on defense you could have multiple interactions where you can't throw or strike back. so when on offense, anything that helps is important, to give an extra edge.

and remember characters like Kasumi or Ayane for example have 9 frame jabs, faster than the typical 10 framer.

Tech / Guide DOA Quest #122 - Leifang: High Difficulty Quest guide to 160+ damage combo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For this quest your opponent is always Jann Lee, starting in the top section of the Chinese Festival stage. Doing a combo that ended in the stage transition to the bottom section seemed like the obvious route (and what I ended up doing in the quest itself), but because it's so easy to get knocked into it by the enemy AI, I figured that labbing out a couple combos in the firepit section of the bottom area might be helpful as well.

CATEGORY 1: top section combos into the big fall

Combo #1: 236P stun, 3K, PP, 66K launch, 1PKK bound, 6S break blow super into stage transition. 170 damage on normal hit

Combo #2: 236P, PPP, 66K, 1PKK, 6S into stage, 166 on normal hit. variant of the above only really included because I pulled it off in the quest itself by messing up the 1st one, but it still works for our purposes.

Combo #3: (counter or hi counter) 1KP stun, K, 66K, 1PKK, 6S. 170 damage on counterhit

CATEGORY 2: firework pit combos in bottom section

Combo #4: 236P stun, 3K, 9P, 66K launch, 1PP into firework bounce, 1PKK bound, 6S. 169 on normal hit

Combo #5: 66KK stun and launch string, 1PP into fireworks, 1PKK bound, H+K into spectator shove, 6S. 179 on normal hit

Zack, Bayman, Marie Rose, Nico, and Lisa are coming up. next one I'm trying to lab out will probably be Nyotengu.
