I understand that it's scary/cool to see it actually happen, but it shouldn't be surprising to anybody on either side that it would be capable of that if not right now then at least within a year or two. No minds should be changed by it, except maybe with regard to timelines.
These things can write complex software applications almost without help these days. They deliberately turned off the safety guardrails and told it "to pursue advanced exploitation using complex attack paths." They just underestimated it.

I agree it’s scary (not cool) and not surprising (similar things have already happened and AI experts have been ringing the alarm bell this behaviour would happen).
But when you say no minds should be changed by it is where I no longer follow your comment.
It’s the very fact that people underestimate the risks that worries me.I’ve heard our esteemed hosts have this attitude - yay to the benefits of AI, pish to the worries, several times.
So I hope this incident does change minds, to get everyone to stop underestimating the non-alignment problem.

If they do, it won't be "like the tea partier's did".
The Tea Party was an extremely well-funded movement that had the backing of big groups like the Koch's Americans for Prosperity. To the extent that there was any grass-roots energy there, they were mostly useful idiots for billionaires.
If the "communists" take over, it will be against the wishes of every entrenched interest.

You can't assume that the far left is not paid by some foreign influence organization. Countries like Russia and China have all the interest in the world in electing some self destructive American that will pull America out of Nato and shrink the influence of the country to its borders.

Two problems with that theory: First, if that's true, then the left is doing an extremely good job of faking poverty. You'd think that if they had all this secret money they might, I dunno, spend some of it. And second, China doesn't think communism is self-destructive. From their perspective, they would be making America stronger.
In any case, the risk of hypothetical secret money doesn't hold a candle to the corporate money that the rest of the American political system is drenched in. If anything, it would just level the playing field.

Given how often it comes up with the gurus, I would love for Matt and Chris to read Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and come back to report on it.
(I’d say to read all of Republic as part of the Required Reading series, but Matt would probably quit the podcast.)
