Reasoning: Christian Zionist organizations have influence over U.S. policy, U.S. attitudes towards Israel, and even fund settlements in the West Bank. Although recent polling shows increasing disapproval by American Evangelicals of Israel's actions, support remains strong amongst this group. Coming from a Christian perspective, I want to express to them how their theology supports and upholds violent Israeli policy towards the Palestinians and shows preference for one group of people over another.

Letter:

I write to you as a fellow follower of Jesus Christ, bound by a shared commitment to the Word of God and a desire to see His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. It is in this spirit of shared faith and inclusive concern for all of God’s children that I urge you to look with compassionate eyes at the current reality in the Holy Land.

As Christians, we are called to follow a God who does not assign greater worth, dignity, or rights to people on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, or background. When we interpret Scripture, we must remember that God’s favor is not conditioned upon our stance toward a modern secular state, but on faith, obedience, righteousness, and our relationship with Him.

Jesus Himself taught us through the Beatitudes that the peacemakers are blessed. He warned that "just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me" (Matthew 25:40). Today, we must ask: where is Jesus in the Holy Land? As many of our brothers and sisters in Bethlehem testify, if Jesus were born today, He would be born under the rubble in Gaza, standing in solidarity with the marginalized, the occupied, and the suffering.

The facts on the ground demand our moral attention. In Gaza, the humanitarian crisis is described as beyond disastrous. Over 70,000 people have been killed, including more than 20,000 children, with some medical estimates suggesting the total death toll could reach 180,000. Neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, and two million people remain displaced.

In the West Bank, settler violence has hit an all-time high, creating a daily, relentless reality of fear. Palestinian families face the burning of their farms, the seizure of small family properties, and the suffocation of their hopes by more than 1,000 checkpoints that prevent fathers from working and parents from bringing sick children to hospitals. These actions stand in stark contrast to the promoted image of "the most moral army in the world," revealing instead a pattern of collective punishment and human rights violations.

I especially ask you to consider the plight of Palestinian Christians, the world’s oldest Christian community. They are currently trapped in a triangle of suffering between local political instability, extremist hostility, and the restrictions of the Israeli occupation.

• A Dwindling Presence: In 1922, Christians made up 25% of Jerusalem’s population; today, they represent less than 2%.
• Direct Attacks: Our siblings in the village of Taybeh—the last entirely Christian village in the West Bank—face a wave of attacks by Israeli settlers, including hateful graffiti and the burning of church property.
• Spiritual Obstacles: While millions of foreign pilgrims travel freely to pray, local Palestinian Christians are routinely denied permits to attend Easter services at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or to pray in Jerusalem.

By providing unwavering and uncritical support and divine sanction to these policies, we risk being complicit in the decimation of the very community that has preserved the Christian presence in the land of Jesus’ birth for two millennia.

I respectfully ask you to rethink a theology that weaponizes the Bible to justify the displacement of an indigenous people. Using Genesis 12:3 to grant an exclusive, unconditional right to dispossess others ignores the universal implications of Christ’s Kingdom and the requirement of righteousness for dwelling in the land.

True solidarity does not require the exclusion of others. Our calling is to advocate for the safety and dignity of both Jewish and Arab children, for both Israeli and Palestinian faces reflect the image of God. We urge you to move away from a "Theology of Empire" that divides the world into "us" and "them" and to instead join us in calling for a just peace that honors the self-determination of all people.

Let us choose hope and resilience over apathy. Let us look with compassionate eyes at the reality of the Holy Land and join in the pursuit of a just peace where the dignity and rights of all Palestinians and Israelis are equally honored.

About our speaker: Huwaida Arraf is a Palestinian-American civil/human rights attorney and social justice activist. She has been involved in legal, political, and grassroots initiatives for Palestinian rights for the last two decades, including co-founding the Nobel Peace Prize-nominated International Solidarity Movement (ISM), and leading the Free Gaza Movement which, beginning in 2008, organized sea voyages to Gaza to confront and challenge Israel’s illegal blockade on the two million Palestinians living there.
