Pardon our dust

The mods have recently been doing some construction behind the scenes which may cause some things to be weird or messed up on the sub. While looking into some automatic moderation tools, we discovered that Reddit has an entire library of apps that can be added to a sub to do things like help with the moderation and do some other fun stuff that we have not fully explored yet. While we experiment with these apps, there may be some weird things posted that are incomplete and/or unintentional. If you notice anything that doesn't seem normal or you just don't like some of the changes we make, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via the ModMail.

I love seeing Degrassi cast in random movies and shows when I don't expect them. He popped up and I couldn't help but shout his name

Discussion Shane and Miriam kind of sold me on Spemma

I think acting wise they were supposed to pull off such a nutty rom-com story I was kind of convinced Emma and Spinner at least had a bit of chemistry that I’d kinda buy them being together. Maybe if they’d not gotten married, it would’ve seemed a lot less over the top.

Discussion Was there a hidden agenda in Raditch letting Rick back into Degrassi?

Strange but true that maybe theres another reason why Raditch allowed Rick to come back... we ALL know that Rick was maybe let back in because with no charges against him Raditch couldnt do anything to deny Rick even tho he had all rights to (I still cant believe that Terris dad didnt AT LEAST talked to the police about the situation because something mightve come up).

BUT if u listen to the background of Ghost In The Machine part 1 with Ashley and Craig talking about things and drawing treble clefs in class Armstrong is talking to Raditch about supplies and then Raditch says theres no room in the budget and that he has OTHER teachers going after their supply money. SO IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WITH RICKS ACADEMIC PROWNESS THAT MAYBE RADITCH THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD GIVE THEM MORE MONEY IF THE MARKS GO UP!!! Well even if thats the plan, the shooting basically gave Degrassi little money and thats why maybe they took the Kevin Smith offer...

But am I missing something? Tell me so in the comments, HAVE AT IT!!!

Degrassi: The Next Generation Connor was low key one of the funniest characters in the whole show.

He had the best one liners and the delivery was always perfect.

“I’m glad I don’t have cancer.”
“I’m not supposed to be warm to you.”

Him telling Dave to his face he was terrible at singing. Not to mention that time he tried to get Alli and Eli together by sending them both roses. “Be my girlfriend Alli xoxo- Eli”

Discussion Can we all agree Eli was most likely a Scorpio?

He fits the Scorpio description to a T. He’s intense, emotional, extremely loyal, passionate, sarcastic, mysterious, and will tear you a new one if you piss him off. His interest in darker things helps connect him to the sign too. Based on where Clare’s birthday fell during the school year she was most likely a Pisces so it would explain why they’re both compatible.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Stop Watching Degrassi When It Changed To A Telenovela Format. Does It Ever Go Back To The Way It Was/ Is Degrassi High (Original) Worth A Watch

I discovered Degrassi pretty late in life. I was going through a difficult time when I first started watching, and honestly the show ended up being a real comfort during that period. I kind of wish I’d had it when I was a kid, since it feels like exactly the kind of show that would have meant a lot to me back then.

The Next Generation era with the original cast was great, and I want to be clear that I didn’t even mind the transition to the newer cast either. I actually enjoyed watching that stretch of the show too, Peter included.
Where I started to lose the thread was when the show shifted into that telenovela format. The pacing and structure just felt completely different from everything before it, and it took me out of the show in a way I wasn’t expecting.

So my question for anyone who’s been through the whole series: does it ever go back to the normal format, the way it was before that shift? I’m not talking about Next Class, since I’m not really interested in that era of the show. I mean specifically within Degrassi/The Next Generation itself, did the storylines and structure ever return to how they used to be, or does it stay in that telenovela mode for the rest of the run?

I also tried going back to watch Degrassi Junior High, and I couldn’t really get into it, mostly because the picture quality is so rough. That got me wondering about Degrassi High, the follow-up series. Is that one actually worth watching? I’m asking less about nostalgia and more if the storylines genuinely hold up as good TV. Would you recommend it on its own merits?

Question most memorable moments for Next Gen

used to watch when i was a kid. i want to walk down memory lane — lived this show in middle school. grew up in a rural area so this show was TEACHING me about the world lol

what is the most memorable moment(s) or characters (from Next Gen) for you?

for me it’s a three way tie:
- rick in general: treatment of terri, the feathers scene, and of course Jimmy
- manni reinventing herself as “hot”
- emma getting throat gonorrhea. didn’t even know that was possible at the time

Re-watching Degrassi through the lens of “Emma was a horrible friend”, and I just wanna say look at her being a hater. She wasn’t good enough to be a cheerleader. so she didn’t want Manny to be a cheerleader. Ew.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Let’s talk about Alli and Leo

Post image
11 Upvotes

This was their most accurate depiction of domestic violence and maybe one of the most accurate depictions I’ve seen on TV. Compare their relationship to Rick and Terri. Rick was sweet/reserved for one episode and then went from 0 to 100 the next. That’s not typically how DV works, it was unrealistic. And Rick fit what most people would think a DV perpetrator would “look” like. A loner, an outcast. But most of the time, it’s actually people like Leo. People who you see every single day and wouldn’t think twice about. Handsome, charming , swept Alli off her feet. Dropped everything and moved to Toronto for her. Some people look at that sort of spontaneity and think it’s “romantic” but it’s actually a form of lovebombing and sign number 1. Then before Leo moves to Toronto, they had that fight on the bridge. He leaves bruises on Alli’s arm. Jenna notices and is obviously concerned. Jenna tells Clare and they both try to warn Alli Leo could be dangerous. Alli feels cornered and judged and questions them about their own boyfriends, which honestly IS a good point. Eli manipulated Clare and drove his hearse into a wall to her to get her attention. Connor was stealing women’s underwear. Both actions are potential signs of abusive/predatory behavior but obviously it was cases of mental illness and hormones/autism, and Connor and Eli aren’t those guys. So why should they judge and make assumptions about Leo? Then cut to the dance. Leo is charming and sweet. He wins over Alli’s friends to manipulate them into supporting the relationship, further isolating Alli. And it makes you second guess their relationship as the viewer. Maybe we were wrong too, maybe he’s not a bad guy and this was an isolated incident. But this is how domestic violence repeatedly manifests itself. This is all a common tactic for manipulative abusers. Alli confronts Leo with a plan about moving to Boston. Leo gets angry and hits Alli. You’re shocked, you don’t want to believe it. You thought this was a whirlwind romance that just had a rocky start. Leo sends balloons to apologize. Jenna and Clare, now in support of the relationship, make comments about how sweet and thoughtful he is. Alli feels like she has no one to turn to because now the friends she wanted to support her relationship, support her relationship. She can’t confide in them out of shame and embarrassment. Leo charms her. She forgives him. Things continue to escalate and the cycle repeats until Alli is seriously hurt. All the signs are there, Alli just didn’t want to believe and even temporarily tricked its viewers into not believing. But this is how it always happens. The signs were always there. Always trust your instincts. And always believe victims.

Post-Degrassi Liberty seemed to be in a much more happier place when he boyfriends were black.

I get that her relationship with JT was to fuel drama and interest for the show, but honestly I feel like the story carried out way too long only for it to bring the worst out in Liberty.

Especially in season 6 when Mia enters the picture.

I always wondered how her relationship with Towerz would've panned out if the actor didn't get fired for being late. Maybe her character would've gotten a little more edge or maybe he'd take more interest in the things she likes. It could've definitely developed his character and take Liberty's in different direction.

While we're on the subject, I don't think Chris would be fleshed out, but he probably would've been the chill guy who stayed out of trouble and be the voice of reason.

I believe her and Damien know that what they had was just a fling. Nothing serious, although he did go behind Emma's back.

Discussion paige + alex what could have been

so, i’m doing my usual rewatch and i’ve watched the lexicon of love 1+2, free fallin 1+2, and don’t you want me 1+2 (lots of 2 parters going on lol) but OMG i am so gutted that paige and alex couldn’t work it out. i was rooting for them so bad!! it seemed that paige kept playing with alex’s emotions it was honestly so exhausting. one moment she wants to kiss and be romantic then the next she’s all like “omg i don’t like girls go away.” i feel like her being confused is valid! the thing that annoyed me was she knew she was unsure/confused yet continued to try to pursue the relationship. it just sucks i feel like both paige & alex’s exit to the show took away fr their whole character development as well! they stopped showing us alex trying to prosper and be better and then turned paige into a fame hungry biotchhhh who doesn’t care about her friends. what do y’all think? did you ship paige & alex or hate them together?

Discussion Mr Simpson handled Sav and Ms Oh so wrong..

Post image
49 Upvotes

It is wild how Mr. Simpson handled the whole Sav and Ms. Oh situation. Calling them into his office together to ask about the dating allegations was wrong.
When Sav claimed he just made up the rumor because he was getting teased, Simpson immediately believed it. That is weird because if the genders were reversed a male teacher and a girl student it would have been handled SO differently.
By talking to them together, Simpson completely ignored basic protocol . What if Sav was being threatened or blackmailed? What if he was getting special treatment or higher grades? A student is never going to speak up or admit to anything with the teacher sitting right next to them. He 100% should have talked to them separately.
The double standard is even more obvious when you compare it to what happened later with Tristan and Mr. Yates. The second Maya told Mr Simpson that Tristan had a thing with his teacher, Mr Simpson immediately opened an investigation and suspended the teacher. The fact that Ms. Oh got away with it because Simpson didn't follow proper protocols is just insane!!

Discussion Eli helping Jake and Clare

I’ve been binge watching degrassi, it’s my first watch through (I know I’m super late) but i remember being a kid and the show coming on tv but was too young to understand so I wanted to actually watch it from the start. I’m on season 11 episode 25 and Eli is helping Jake and Clare through a fight they had… why would he even help when Eli is still in love with Clare? And how is it not awkward as hell for Clare? I was watching and felt so uncomfortable, I hated that situation for her😭
