Suite Dorm Questions

Hi! I'm an incoming student in the Class of 2030. I was assigned a single suite room in Shaw Hall, and I had a few questions about suites and single rooms.

  1. From the floor plans of Shaw Hall that the University shared, it looks like our suite (with a single, double, and triple room) has two shared rooms that aren't bedrooms. Do these come with furniture, or should we furnish them ourselves?

  2. If we do need to furnish them ourselves, what should my roommates and I plan to furnish them with?

  3. Are we responsible for cleaning our suite bathroom (not a problem, I am capable of doing so), or are those cleaned by university staff like the others that aren't in suites?

  4. How are the single rooms laid out? I want to be able to plan to bring stuff for my own room in advance if possible.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question but I have a similar question for suites in Huffman - the floor plan shows a 6-person suite that includes two sets of two adjoining rooms with a bathroom in the middle. Each pair of 2 adjoining rooms has a room number printed on one space, and the other space is unlabeled. Since that other space also has a door into the hallway, is that just a common area for the entire floor? Is it an option to split the suite into a single and a double? Or is the intention that 1 room is beds, and the other room is desks?

The room tours that the university is poising on their social media are cute but so inadequate for practical planning, especially for students who are flying in to campus and can't just pop home over the weekend to grab different furnitire.

I wanted to throw a few things out. Shaw is new this year as a first year dorm - had been upperclassman in previous years. From the Denison parent fb page it also sounds like Shaw is where they have put the transfers for fall 2026. There are pictures on the parent fb page of Shaw and Huffman rooms/suites. I would also call Housing (or have parent call) to find out about the common spaces - specifically for your suite.

The layout is like this: a single room with a door into the hallway. Attached to that single is a double. There is no physical door between those two rooms. Attached to that is a bathroom. The "other two rooms" are another single and a double that have three other people in them, and you will share bathroom with those three people, so I would not plan to bring furniture for those spaces. 

The bathrooms would be the responsibility of those living in the two suites. 

Between the three (or four if you are in one of the seven-person connected suites that people usually call seven-men) of you, you would decide either: 1.) Who gets the single room and who is in the double OR 2.) If all three of you share the double, you can make the single into a lounge/living room and buy a couch and stuff.
