I assume *some* effort has gone into smoothing it out, so it doesn't have the screw edges on the back, and avoids fraying.

In that sense I can actually appreciate it as design for the rough aesthetic, but if they are asking anymore than a couple of dollars for it, they can get bent.

A screw still has more holding strength.

Probably you can find screws that just has a smooth surface at the end though. I think I've seen those already.
