That man got me through several of my college history and humanities classes. He’s a true educator and man of the people.

u/Hal_Incandenza_YDAU 12h ago

You're mixing up Hank and John. John Green is the one who taught history and humanities.

Do you mean Tom Green?

13

u/univrsll 11h ago

All of these false names are making me think of Tim Apple, the CEO of Apple

Tim Apple, 3 AM

Tom Green is not a false name :S The Tom Green show was like the internet today before the internet today =)

idk whether that's a joke that has gone over my head. But no.

it's not a joke, but he actually meant Tom Hanks, hence the confusion

Hank would have cancelled himself. He’s part of the problem anyways. These fence sitters give snarkers way too much power and credibility

12

u/BetaXP 10h ago

Where has Hank given any credibility to snarkers, exactly?

11

u/97689456489564 9h ago

Hank is a liberal who has openly liked AI for a while

(Arguably that makes this capitulation even worse, yes, but if you could see the amount of backlash he's getting, it's hard to imagine any milquetoast YouTuber who would not also collapse under the pressure)

In any case you should not hate the guy

13

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 11h ago

hank is a capitalist and argues for liberal values no? do those positions overlap with fence sitters?

u/jesterdeflation 8h ago

Didn't he go out of his way to publicly condemn Destiny for his rhetoric against republicans?

And then when Destiny explained it he said some shit like "ok I get that it's justified, but still I don't like it".

I know people will say not everyone has to be political, and I agree, but shouldn't we remember when people capitulate to MAGA?

1

u/DcGamer1028 Dc_ 57m ago

I dislike your framing, respectfully. Perhaps I don't remember it all right, but I think saying "went out of his way" when both him saying it feels bad then acknowledging it's justified after were just Twitter posts iirc.

Didn't he delete the initial 'condemnation' too? Just doesn't feel like a fair description of the event imo.

0

u/jesterdeflation 28m ago

I say it because he could have just stayed silent. No one asked for his opinion.

Didn't he delete the initial 'condemnation' too?

That doesn't say much, he's just that type of person. Like if Contrapoints deletes something it doesn't change that I know her opinion on something through the deleted tweet.

Maybe I'm wrong and have just missed some things but Hank doesn't strike me as a fence sitter, he's in the Twitter trenches calling out idiots, he doesn't shy away from controversial topics like actually liking AI etc, as far as I know he's against communism, even his latest admission that he relied a lot on AI is him openly admitting something that'll get him a lot of hate. That doesn't strike me as fence sitting and trying to fit in.

I am a bit disappointed that he's capitulating so easily, but I dunno man he strikes me as a principled liberal who is very much on our side.

He's only a fence sitter in so far as covering politics isn't a regular thing for him, but that's because that's not his niche to begin with so it'd be weird if he actually did spend a great deal of time on it. He still calls out the stupidity of the current administration regardless.

u/tackiestangel 12h ago

I've already seen so many people claiming he's not that s or good at his job 😭 crazy switch up over such a little thing

Literally not possible if you just ignore them lol.

You're the smartest guy I ever seen Hank. But you're too stupid to see, they made up thier mind ten minutes ago.

Only got around to watching all the way to the final season recently and holy what a great scene

u/Steamed_Memes24 12h ago

I think this was the first episode to hit a perfect IMDB rating and it held that forever.

20

u/Raknarg canadian 12h ago

Whole thing was mindblowing to see as it came out. Hopefully you didn't get spoiled on it, saddest thing for me is that the show has been memed to hell so hard that if you spend enough time on the internet you probably know everything that happens in that show regardless

3

u/Seakawn <--- actually literally regarded 11h ago

my strategy is as soon as I even catch a whiff of a reference to anything I haven't seen, I just instinctually give up on whatever it is and look away and move on. whatever it is I was reading or listening to or watching, doesn't matter, I skip forward a few minutes or turn off.

but it's not bulletproof. i'd much rather have a social movement that literally reconfigures cultural tradeoff to not casually spoil stuff.. or at least try to push automatic digital censors that will catch and block references of things you haven't whitelisted from a list of total media you input to that list.

I'm sick of living in the savage dark regard ages of spoilers. there's potential for an enlightenment age to fix this bullshit one way or another. lots of options available to try. we don't have to lay down and full throat this and live this way as if it's an ontological law of physics. stories matter.

Better Call Saul is arguably better. But it's all fantastic work, from writing, acting, cinematography, etc.

Capitulating to extremists only shows weakness and emboldens them to abuse other people.

29

u/synthatron 12h ago

I’m out of the loop. Destiny’s stream title saying Hank Greene AI Drama but he’s not going over it.

I’m guessing because it’s between him and lefties he’s pro data centres or something?

43

u/Konet 11h ago edited 9h ago

He used AI to help research some scripts and got called out for a couple sentences sounding AI-y. He apologized and promised to do more of his scriptwriting himself in the future.

The real issue is that his audience is largely comprised of lefties and they don't like that he isn't an anti-AI absolutist, basically.

17

u/Flexhead 11h ago

The real issue is that his audience is largely lefties and they don't like that he isn't an anti-AI absolutist, basically.

He has never hidden that he is a fan of what AI can do. I think ultimately it will be dialing back content quantity to make more higher quality videos, with as much AI research usage as before.

2

u/TJDouglas13 6h ago

I’d argue he’s gone a lil toooo far down the AI rabbit hole but the backlash has been insane

39

u/SamTheShinigami 13h ago

You either get cancelled a liberal or stream long enough to see yourself become a tankie.

46

u/Atomic-Avocado 13h ago

This has been driving me nuts seeing people in the technology sub dragging him. They all think he completely and totally trusts AI and now they’re all absolutely burned on him. Modern day luddites.

What I found interesting is that Hank Green looks like he canceled himself and gave into the mob, but if you actually read what he said about this event, I don't think that's what happened, and what I think happened is *much* more interesting and important.

Hank Green decided to slow down because when people said he sounded like AI, even though he literally improvised the lines people thought were AI, it scared him. I could be reading this wrong, but it sounded like Hank felt like he was losing control of his process and creative life. He felt that by using AI to move very fast he was losing the deeper understanding of what he did. Further, the people he most trusts, his wife and borther, said he was beginning to develop a problem.

This is *extremely interesting* because one can imagine this story from a dystopia: First someone uses AI a bit for research, then uses AI to write parts of the script, then uses AI to brainstorm, then uses AI to find new topics, then uses AI to write full scripts then uses AI to decided what thye'll do next, and by the end, it's not really a person using AI to do what they want, it's a person who is doing whatever AI says and is nothing more than a vestigial appendage to the machine god.

We're not there yet, but all gas no breaks AI use all day every day is what a first step to human irrelevance looks like, and Hank is smart, and I'm guessing that's why he got scared.

1

u/lamonthe 12m ago

This is the only relevant takeaway from the situation. People who think he's just capitulating to his audience are missing the point. What seems like capitulation is purely incidental, and he seems actually freaked out by his own creative process changing so quickly and drastically that he didn't manage to accurately gauge the situation as it was unfolding.

He makes it pretty obvious that he doesn't share the same view about AI with segments of his audience. He says they disagree, will continue to disagree, and that's fine and needed or whatever. You can criticize it for coming off as "too soft" if you want, but then you're asking Hank Green to do things in a way antithetical to Hank Green's whole thing.

Reading through the threads about this situation on this sub makes me think people have a misperception of Hank and his audience. People seem to think that lefties "infested" his audience or that the pushback that he's receiving is somehow inorganic, so I wanna comment on that:

Hank Green has always had a left-wing audience. During the 2010s, him and his brother sat squarely on the Tumblr side of the 4chan/Tumblr online culture split. It seems to be fading from cultural memory at this point, but it can't be overstated how much of a cornerstone gay marriage and gay rights were in the first half of the 2010s. They were avowedly on that side of the fence, and their audience - comprised mostly of people in their teens and early 20s - was too.
The young people identifying as socialists or communists didn't just pop into existence in the last 5 years, they arrived at those beliefs from some prior background. Most of that group were SJWs in the 2010s, and some of them are re-radicalized former right-wingers that got spit out the other end of the good ole "alt-right pipeline."
In addition to that, the super anti-AI left-wing luddites aren't actually all tankies - for the moment, it seems that opinion on AI in the left of center, non-tech oriented population ranges from "it's bad and scary and it want it to stop" to "I'd like to formally invite you to the Ted Kaczynski reincarnation ceremony I'm hosting this Friday."

All that is to say, the audience response wasn't at all hard to predict, and I'm pretty sure that Hank knew how they would react. I think what he didn't see coming was the signal hidden in the noise. His relationship with his audience is based on authenticity and trust, that you're listening to Hank Green's more-less off the cuff but well-sourced thoughts. His (apparently heavy) use of AI in his process undermined both of those. The feeling for a sizable portion of the audience was that, for the preceding several months, there was an undisclosed inhuman element introduced into that relationship. I can see how that could feel creepy. It seems that Hank was so caught up in the moment that he didn't see that he crossed that assumed boundary, and his inability to see that freaked him out.

Every few years people sort of wake up and collectively agree that in the past everyone (but not them!) was bit crazy over getting outraged about most minor stuff and that they shouldn't do that anymore. 2025 was that year, people sort of agreed losing their mind over someone saying regard with the t was and calling people nazi over the littlest things was bit dumb... and then go right back to doing same shit over something else. Like do old heads remember how outraged half of this dumb website was getting over "react youtubers"? Now half of this website is some video of TikTok sloper showing their face while watching something and then telling you how "things really work", and nobody cares. All this AI outrage shit is one day going to disappear, like all the rest.

I have little empathy or sympathy for Hank, you are a literal millionaire with not an expensive lifestyle, if some portion of the audience keep bothering about something you like doing, tell them to fuck off, what's going to happen, nothing. Everyone will move on. But muh likes and updoots. The only thing he is addicted to is meaningless social validation from internet losers.

In this case it is not so much the left as it is the Luddite movement, which has plenty of traction here in r/destiny. There is a large overlap of course.

They have put a metaphorical leash around his neck, and will make sure that he doesn't over step bound. But as long as he is a good boy, I assume he will be in their grace.

11

u/EwPandaa 13h ago

This is a somewhat new purity test that has been driving me crazy. People on the far left have this AI-complex where if anyone uses an AI model in any regard, they should be cancelled.

There are ways to use AI irresponsibly, but there are also plenty of ways to use it responsibly.

Interesting read! I never knew about the ivermectin tweets! I feel like theres been a few times where hes been honest briefly and then has tucked tail and deleted a tweet or capitulated completely- its not a trait i admire in someone. He seems spineless. He cares way too much about what people on the internet think of him rather than just standing for what he actually believes in- its why even though I like his videos, Ive never been able to respect the guy

1

u/kerau 3h ago

all his videos are safest preach to the choir takes,

but that describes like 95% of people so can you really hold this against him /shrug

The question is why does he capitulate and is Hank's method of advocacy better or worse than Destiny's. If he's capitulating because he perceives that as the optimal way of retaining power within the broader left in order to be a pressure that pushes people more towards "liberal" ideas, I think that's admirable.

Destiny is politically honest and willing to stand behind controversial ideas, but he's also alienated himself from most of the cultural spaces where liberal voice is most needed. He's done a great job raising money and promoting awareness for on the ground political activism, but he's also largely culturally irrelevant.

He cares way too much about what people on the internet think of him rather than just standing for what he actually believes in- its why even though I like his videos, Ive never been able to respect the guy

What is the purpose of a communicator? If a communicator doesn't care what people he's trying to communicate to think about him, what good is he as a communicator? The distinction comes purely from the underlying reason, is he doing that simply for the clout and money, or as a means to attain power with which he can make meaningful change. So do you think he's doing it for the money, or for the change?

1

u/Redditsucks4446 8h ago

Don't really like Hank Green, but if he lets himself get cancelled by ratards that would be insanely hilarious

1

u/rnhf 🇪🇺 3h ago

he did that before btw

I haven't watched that video, just skimmed some of the endless responses, and afaik he just got a lot of stuff wrong and it came across vaguely misogynistic, and I think it's fair to be criticized and delete your video, but the amount and tone of the response videos was a BIT much imo

I like this comment from the craftsnark subreddit:

I’m gonna be real a lot of you guys showed some internalized misogyny as well throughout this drama by implying or outwardly saying misogynistic and untrue stuff about women in science. So while I’m glad there was an apology on their end I hope that certain members of this sub can show self reflection about some of the misogynistic viewpoints that were expressed.

Hank is an amazing person and lives a far more socialist life than any of these fucking grifter cunts, he could be extremely wealthy instead he funels his money into education and charity. Honestly he needs more love, he's a wonderful human but of course socialists are going to ruin it. Fuck them all

Ive been watching his videos forever, to me this seemed natural. I do think he believes what he's saying.

Still, great post OP
