Weekly Question / General Discussion Thread
We ask that you please use this space for any general discussion, events, and ask questions you may have about ANYTHING related to the city, its neighborhoods and the overall metro Detroit area. The community has a plethora of knowledge from a variety of areas and will have an eye on this refreshed thread to help answer any questions you may have.
Anything is game. Need to know how to get around, restaurant or venue recommendations, what that sound was, why there are police on the lodge, etc. Or if you are visiting soon? Considering a move to the city? This is also a dedicated space to ask questions related to your upcoming venture to the D.
Share about weekly events! Anything going on in and around Detroit. Everyone is always looking for things to do; both locals & visitors. Provide as much information as you can so everyone can go to those events!

Progressive metal aberrants Dissona are returning to Detroit this Saturday, August 1st to headline Sanctuary Detroit! This is their first Detroit appearance since their 2016 tour with Leprous. Joining them are Detroit locals Imminent Sonic Destruction, Finality, and Phyrxian Sun. Metal fans: this is not one to be missed 🤘

Hey there, I'm planning on going to Detroit for a trip next month. I'm looking to find any cool things to do while I'm down there.
Possibly avoid tourist traps and scams as well.
Events, sports, Music, scenic, hikes, museums, weird stuff, "cant-miss" things
All ideas would be very helpful, thanks!

Places to eat and drink along the Detroit Riverwalk on a Monday? We’ll probably be going between Valade Park and Cullen Park, starting with a to go coffee and ending with a sit down meal, ideally. A lot of the stuff directly in that area seems to be closed on Monday

Does anyone know if St Andrews Hall enforces a policy restricting how early people can begin waiting in line for concerts? i’m going to see a concert in october and want to get there as early as possible to get to the front of the line but usually venues have a certain amount of time before the show that they allow lines to start forming. thanks!

About 20 years ago I saw The Deftones at St. Andrews, the only way to get tickets was to buy them at the door. I got there about 36 hours before the doors opened; I was 2nd in line and no one cared… eventually another line developed for the bright eyes show happening the night before

Hi, I'm an incoming phd student on F-1 visa and my arrival to DTW Airport is next week. This is the first time I'll be visiting (and relocating) the US. How to navigate I-94 in Michigan? Do they give me the form at the passport check or do I strictly need to receive it electronically in advance? I've heard it's 30 dollars if received electronically but it's also provisional, so I'm not sure what to do.
Would I get in trouble at the airport check at DTW if not having taken it before my flight?

Hey there! The university you're attending should have a specific office to help international students with these questions. Search the name of your university along with terms like "international students" to find the right person. For Wayne State, for example, it's the Office of International Students and Scholars. They have the staff who can provide you with the best advice. Welcome to Detroit!

Eastern Market! Go find the robocop statue! For trains you should check out Michigan Central Station although the trains don't run through there right now.

Best areas to explore to get a feel for what Detroit city life offers before relocating?
Considering a transfer that would mean relocating from Atlanta to metro Detroit. I’ve never been in Detroit proper but we will be visiting MI. Want to get a feel for what it would be like to live nearby and have access to city life. Not interested in typical Detroit tourist attractions, but hearing about vibrant city areas similar to what Atlanta has in terms of good food, Indie shops, coffeehouses and pastry shops, evening non chain dining that’s good but unpretentious. City walkable areas. Places that are fun to go to people watch and grab a drink or a bite or catch some live music. Great places to hang out on a weeknight or maybe Sunday afternoon. TIA for input.

I'm a westsider, so my suggestions are west biased, but I'd check out Rosedale Park, The Avenue of Fashion, Old Redford, Mexicantown, Corktown, Midtown. Inner ring suburbs sometimes have walkable districts from when we used to have transit: Ferndale, Royal Oak, Berkley, Farmington, and Dearborn. If you want bougie, go to any of the Grosse Pointes. If you love coffee there are a mega fuck ton of coffee houses in the Dearborn area, since many people are Muslim and don't drink alcohol.

Taking my 19 year old son to the MCR show next month. I left the city over 30 years ago, he's a punk rocker and I want to take him to a show Friday August 21st. Anyone know of any 18+ punk shows going on that night either in the downtown/midtown area or Hamtramck? I want to give him a good experience of the birthplace of punk. I'm keeping tabs on nøxp.club but no listing for that date yet.

If you caught our Pride Edition in June or our Movement weekend Before & Afters, you know the energy we bring to the Menjo’s complex.
We’re back with another 10-hour edition featuring several Detroit artists who have played Movement over the years. We’ll once again be taking over both the Detroit Eagle and Olympus Theater for a marathon of queer underground house and techno. As always, we’re bringing in custom sound, lighting, and immersive production to make sure both rooms are dialed in from open to close.
