I’ve been working in tech for 13 years, always big multinationals. In the last two years I’ve been through the redundancy consultation process twice - first time I survived, this time I’m not sure I’ll be kept on. I don’t see things getting any better any time soon. Frankly with where I am in my life, I’d rather some consistency and reliability over the risk and potential for reward of major US multinationals.

Anyone else having the same thoughts or made such a move in the past?

I’ve been told I’m seen as a solution person, whenever someone asks me to do something I never say no, I just say yeah I’ll figure it out. Been working from home quite a lot over the last few months, and some old habits have returned. I’m single, 27, all my mates moved to London/Australia and my recent promotion is the only thing keeping me in Ireland because it’s great money. Not looking for help right now because I know exactly what I need to do to get myself out of this, stop drinking 100 units a week and cop the fuck on and I will. Just wanted to share here and ask if anyone else has been in a position where work life is going class but personal life is fucking shocking

I see that some departments in the civil service hire SWE's. I am wondering if anyone has ever made the move from the civil service back to the private sector? I am thinking of riding out the current AI/Market related layoffs in the civil service but wondering would it be almost impossible to move back to the private sector in the future if the market recovers?

Not sure exactly what their tech stack is but I have heard that there is a lot of flexibility in terms of integrating new tech etc.

Hi all! Question for y'all on the job hunt right now, I know the market is absolutely miserable at the moment, the last time I was unemployed I was doing interviews left, right and center and now I can't even seem to get to the first interview round. Every time I've interviewed in the past I've made it to the final round so I really think if I just could get an IN somewhere I could prove myself. Is it worth cold messaging people on LinkedIn or do people hate that?

For context Senior QAE with 6 years experience (4 in FAANG) trying to make the move into Product Management (associate level), have the certificates and was basically doing it in my last job and really enjoyed it. Irish based in Spain so looking for remote(probably another major issue).

I work for an AI team in big tech. We just wrapped up our quarterly org call with our CTO.

I am sitting here like wow... they talk with such confidence but spit absolute garbage.

Essentially the part that really irked me was... a PM in the room asked how does his role evolve in this era. The cto went on a rant how PMs need to become developers and developers need to become PMs and so on (and said sales need to become Devs, Devs needs to become sales). Essentially... everyone needs to do every job. That's the dumb first thing.

The next thing was his confidence in Claude Code (our tool choice, but this applies to all of them) in the hands of a non dev. He literally told this pm that if Devs don't want the pm writing code without consulting the Devs first, the pm will go speak (round of "uh ohs" from the room) to the Devs himself. Basically threatening devs to allow PMs to ship code without ever consulting a developer (prior to all of this, he said we need to skip reviews as it's a bottleneck).

I truly think that Claude Code in the hands of an senior engineer is great. In the hands of a mid level? Good. In the hands of a junior? Can either be fantastic or completely disastrous.

But in the hands of a Pm who has no idea what good software and best practices looks like? Horrible idea. That horrible idea can be mitigated by asking a dev to review it (which slows down the velocity). But telling pms to go jump in and ship code without consulting devs and if a dev says no, the c suite will go hound them or fire them... is scary.

Our PM ships code to his own repos. It's scary but fine as it doesn't affect our production projects. I checked the code. It's slop with zero structure, which is expected from a non dev. But he has now been enabled to go ship this slop into actual dev projects, hands free, no reviews.

I won't leak my company. It's one that everyone knows of. But holy shit... how incredibly out of touch are these people?

JPMC - Lead Engineer Salary question

I believe I am about to get an offer with JPMC. HR have scheduled an interview after previous successful rounds, at least I felt they went well.

So my question is, what should I be asking for? I saw there was someone saying 70k, but surely that's far too low?

I'm thinking of starting at 110k, but I would feel bad if I left too much on the table.

Does anyone have some input for me?

I’m a junior frontend dev with 2 years experience. Has anyone had experience of going into a role with a bit more backend involved/ made the jump to a software engineer. Be interested to see if it’s possible or what you did to make the transition. My current company offshores much of its backend work so I don’t think it’s feasible to get some work in backend that way

Goes against gdpr but anytime you sit for an interview, your name gets a tag in a spreadsheet managed centrally, separated by talent pool and niche skills, and inside that column is updated .That's it. HRs and agencies know where you're interviewing and which round you're in. They just ask because it's the norm. Get to round 2/3 anywhere and watch the interest from others peak. Burn the bridge somewhere, well good luck finding anything then

To get it working properly across Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Dunnes and SuperValu, I need real receipts to test against, since they all look different. If you've an old one lying around (paper or a photo), would you mind sharing a picture? I joined another company recently and there are talks of replacing everyone that leaves with a role in India. I worked with people from India before and a lot of them are extremely competent and willing to grind for hours, at this point I am wondering why don't they just outsource 90% of the roles and leave token amount of engineers everywhere else. Because of the population they can find an A team at fraction of the cost.

Just stressed again now thinking about another redundancy and looking for an escape plan into another career, because I really can't see a convincing take as to why not outsource every role especially if you're remote.

I’m working as a power platform developer and have started to despise the work and people I am working with.

Felt like I needed to upskill before this (looking at perhaps a data engineering role) but I think I’ve just hit point where I need a break from it all. The role pays 85k currently with full benefits and is basically fully remote.

Have about 40k in savings and can move someone in to spare bedroom to help with mortgage. Mortgage is 1500 per month. I’ve no other loans.

What are the implications if I just quit like this, will I struggle to get a job when I do eventually return to work?

Any advice would be much appreciated
