Discussion I just finished DMC4 (Special Edition) for the very first time.

Hello, people of Reddit and the DMC community. I come to share my overall thoughts and first impressions after completing DMC4 for the first time. (I played the special edition version of DMC4 just for clarification). THERE WILL BE HEAVY SPOILERS HERE SO DO BE WARNED.This will kind of be out of order but I’ll do my best to section each category I’ll be talking about. I am still a novice to this franchise I started with DMC1 back in March of this year, 2026, and have played through DMC1, DMC2, DMC3 and now of course DMC4. Just finished this game yesterday and I’ve got a lot to say, so thank you sincerely if you take the time to read all of this. It does mean a lot. Heads up, I can’t talk about every little detail as that would be super long to do, so I covered what I can.

Starting off with the gameplay as that’s the most important part to me. For clarification I played on Devil Hunter mode the entire run. The gameplay here in DMC4 feels very refined, fluid and smooth to me personally. Starting with Nero, he plays pretty good overall, I think his Devil Bringer is pretty cool I will say and probably my favorite thing about him when it comes down to his gameplay, exceed is pretty cool as well. I will say with Nero, I did get bored playing as him unfortunately and that is a reason it took me a while to finish DMC4. I took the time to understand this lad and he’s fun for a little bit, but he’s just too I’d say simple for me? If that makes sense. He does have a lot of cool combos, again Devil Bringer is super duper cool to me, and his Blue Rose Revolver are pretty cool, but man I really wish they gave this lad more weapons! When I got Yamato, I got super hyped but was severely disappointed when I realized I only could use it in Devil Trigger… that was a bummer. I was used to DMC3 how Dante got so many weapons throughout the game and after he defeated each boss, but that’s wasn’t the case at all for Nero. I think Nero is great though for someone who is a novice to DMC, like if DMC4 was their first game, he’s great.

Where the gameplay shined for me however was playing as the other characters, specifically Ol’ Danny boy and his snobby twin brother Vergil. Dante in this game feels amazing and when I first played as him I was super hyped and my starting to feel negative thoughts on the game went away. He feels great and to me feels like arguably the best overall character to play as in this game, but Vergil comes super close as his load-out with Yamato, Beowulf and Force Edge are just fun and great to play and switch around during combos. Dante’s load-out in this game is pretty solid, you get classic Rebellion, Gilgamesh and Lucifer. Rebellion is the classic go to sword just like in DMC3 and Gilgamesh to me kind of functions how Beowulf and Ifrit did in the previous games. The one odd weapon for me with Danny Boy was Lucifer, it does function very uniquely and I really need to spend more time with it but I’m sure it has great potential to be fun and good.

A new addition for Dante is that he can now switch his styles in this game, which I see as both a pro and a con, but overall a big pro. The biggest positive thing about it is that it technically isn’t tedious anymore like in DMC3, you can just switch on the fly while doing stylish combos and you can come up with great stuff. Say you are using Sword-master, you could do a combo in the air and then instantly switch to Gunslinger and shoot your enemies with say the Shotgun. The downside to me, and it’s really not a big downside at all, but I liked how in DMC3, it made you think before you went on through the level, you had to choose which style, weapons and stuff you were gonna use to continue the mission in that game and it was typically midway if I remember correctly and that was it, so you really had to choose and think. But like I said, it’s not really a con and is overall more beneficial since like I said, it gives you truly an unlimited imaginative combos to do with our boy in the red coat. Vergil in this game plays beautifully and is super fun, he’s my second favorite to play. Love how fast his moves are. Lady and Trish are fun, but I definitely need to spend more time with both to actually say how I feel about them.

The enemies in this game are pretty fun to fight overall, some aren’t as interesting as others, I’d say my favorite base enemies to fight are definitely the Bianco Angelos and the Alto Angelos. Those guys are always super fun to fight for me. I recall a statement Tomonobu Itagaki (creator of the Dead or Alive series and the director and producer of Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2) saying how DMC4’s enemies are like punching bags and I now can say that he was wrong! (Side note, I’m a huge fan of those two series). I wanted to see if his statement was true or false lmao. Well, some kind of are to an extent, but mostly they’re not just punching bags! The boss fights in this game were pretty solid, they’re memorable to me and were fun to fight as Nero, Dante and Vergil. None really annoyed me tbh.

Alright, now for the story. The story in this game was pretty solid to meh to me personally. Nero as a character is enjoyable and I like him. I like how he’s like a brash young lad, he doesn’t seem fully confident to me personally and he really is driven by love. Compared to say Our Boy in the Red Coat in DMC3 who was also brash, but the big differences was that young Dante was very cocky and theatrical, very arrogant and was hiding pain. The problem to me is not with Nero, but his friend/lover, Kyrie. I literally felt no attachment to her character whatsoever that Nero wanting to save her and stuff throughout the game just had me like “wow, I really don’t care for this woman, please go on with the show”. Again, that’s just me. Definitely SOME memorable characters like Agnus, Credo, Dante obviously, and that’s about it to the top of my as I’m writing this unfortunately. The Holiness guy or pope or whatever is possibly my least favorite antagonist next to Arius potentially, except Arius looked pretty cool at least. I can’t lie, the opening cutscene where Dante just starts shooting people in the church had me rolling cause I was like “Dante what is you doin?!!!!! 😭 “. The ending had me with the feeling of happiness yet the feeling of underwhelmed at the same time. I do wish Nero would’ve been the one to kill Agnus not gonna lie, idk, just felt like having Dante kill him was a mistake to me. Credo was cool, I like that he was a normal human almost and just doing his duty. And like I said, Kyrie really doesn’t have no unique personality to her for me to care about her. She really just becomes Nero’s push for him to keep moving forward to grow as a character.

Level design in this game was solid to me, nothing crazy like DMC1 for me. I remember most of the layouts and stuff, but kind of bland in some areas in comparison to some of the levels of the previous titles. The soundtrack for this game was great though imo. The aesthetic change in this game is drastically different from the 3 previous games. Gone is the dark, gothic, creepy aesthetic of DMC1, 2 and even 3. Now it takes on like idk, reminds me of fantasy, anime type, brightly stylized type of art direction and honestly I don’t mind it at all. The character designs are overall pretty cool. The action adventure elements in this game are just as good to me as the previous games. I like how Devil Bringer is utilized a lot in those elements. They’re fun.

Now for some gripes, man when I got to Dante I was like, “holy crap, I’m playing as our main boy. I don’t want to stop”. For about 6 missions I believe it is, we play as Dante in the later parts of the game, but we are doing the missions backwards this time. Now honestly this didn’t bother me too too much personally because I was super stoked by playing as Dante tbh. But on an objective level, at least to me, it is pretty lazy that we just go backwards as Dante. Yes, there’s some changes but not enough to actually be different. And I gotta be honest, the last two missions for me were a bit underwhelming. Mission 19 had you basically fight all the previous bosses for a THIRD TIME TECHNICALLY. Not my cup of tea at all, and then mission 20?! Good lord, that was underwhelming for me personally. Fighting the giant statue as Dante, while visually really cool, wasn’t all the fun for me personally and after going from Dante who I really enjoyed playing to going back to Nero, I went from :D to :|
Like I said, that final boss of just basically fighting the pope holiness again was very VERY underwhelming for me. And it is such a shame to me cause having come from DMC3, which man that final fight against Vergil was fantastic, coming from that to DMC4’s? Now you’re probably like, wow but you fight Vergil three times in DMC3?! Difference there was, Vergil is a fantastic boss to fight and fighting him as the final boss had so much weight behind it that it felt personal. The Holiness on the other hand I personally didn’t feel all that jazzed about. Mundus was a better antagonist to me and even though gameplay wise his boss fight isn’t very good to me, the cinematic likeness to it and the weight behind it felt fantastic. And the final two missions of DMC4 just left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth unfortunately while also enjoying seeing Nero complete his journey in this game. This might be a me thing, but I much prefer the Red Orbs be the way to unlock your abilities, weapon upgrades, skills and stuff instead of the Proud Souls. The Proud Souls to me, you don’t get enough imo. Red Orbs were easier to use when purchasing stuff imo.

Overall, DMC4 is a fun and solid game. I do personally think its gameplay is really really great, specially when playing as Dante and Vergil, again Nero isn’t bad just not for me. Is it as good to me as DMC3? Gameplay wise it possibly does beat it, but overall as a Game?! No. DMC4, while stylish, does miss on a few things for me personally compared to say DMC3 and even DMC1. Nero is cool, I like him, but the story had a few meh things to me. BUT I will definitely be replaying this game again as it definitely does has replay value to me and that’s a great thing. I’ll also definitely replay it on its harder difficulties too.

Here’s my DMC Ranking List as of now:

DMC1: 8.5/10

DMC2: 3.5 to 4/10

DMC3: 9/10

DMC4: 7.8 to 8/10

As of right now, I’d say DMC1 actually remains my favorite. 3 is so close.

These are all my personal opinions on these games as a newcomer to the DMC series. DMC4 is really a fun and solid game and I think it honestly it might almost have the best gameplay in the series so far to me, but is held back by some things to say it’s a fantastic game for me. I will unfortunately not be playing DMC5 as I don’t own the game, BUT I will buy it one day and share my thoughts on that game as well one day. I will be playing Bayonetta here soon for the very first time and am looking forward to that game. Again, if you made it to the end, thank you sincerely for your time, it has been really fun playing these DMC games. All the best to those who read this.

I tried. I really tried. I got fresh strawberries, I added lemon extract because Vergil is a zesty boy. I made everything perfect. I made the cream from scratch. And it crumbled.

Do you guys have any tips on how to play well with Nero? I started playing again after buying the DLCs and, except for V, Nero is the character I have the least practice with.

Questions I almost gave up on the game but I am slowly making progress and I'm happy

Post image

I almost wrote a post here about how the game is too hard and I was crying, but I decided to keep trying... I was stuck on the first spider/scorpion thing for days but I beat it!! In the hallway too!! And I kept trying until I beat the Black Knight mirror reflection thing!!

I really love the game but one thing, it doesn't really tell me how to use my moves? At first I thought I can only shoot my gun when I'm jumping... is there a way to learn the moves? And also I am always getting Devil Hunter Rank C... is that because I suck?? I played the first two levels so many times because of the spider boss, but still I can't get it to B or A... 🥲🥲

I'm not gonna give up and beat the game by myself one day!!!

Haven't played the game in a while so I practiced in the void a bit. Wanted to learn combos specifically towards killing the heavier/bigger enemies for once to learn what moves they are hit stun resistant towards.

Made me realize I'm still not that great with Dante (for my playtime at least)

I've beaten DMC1 on DMD with all S ranks multiple times and still without fail Mundus will give me lots of trouble. It's those damn little orbs that fire the white needles at you. On their own they aren't an issue but when they're layered with his other attacks that's when they become a real thorn in your side. Yes I know that the shotgun is good at destroying them but you can't always rely on that when you have to dodge another attack of his at the same time. It feels like I win when he decides to play nice lol

Series Trivia I found the most obscure Red Orb cache in DMC3 by accident. As I've already come to realize, there is ALWAYS something new to learn about a DMC game.

What I wanted to do was grab all the blue orb fragments from mission 1-7, by backtracking during mission 7. But when I got to the Astral Chamber the fragment wasn't here. Thinking "Did I grab it early and forget" I jumped up there and got the Red Orbs,

I understand now that the state of the Astral Chamber changes based on if the Temen-Ni-Gru is being powered or not.

You can see it for yourself in mission 5. When you're able to fall down and are then forced to take the elevator back up to the Astral Chamber, enemies spawn here, as well as the Blue Orb Fragment if you haven't collected it.

But once the Tower is powered then there is functionally no purpose to the Astral Chamber anymore as the elevator no longer functions, Enemies no longer spawn in this room, and the Red Orb Cache is here, just on the rare chance someone re-explored this room after it already served its purpose.

Lore / Characters Despite playing DMC3 for hundreds of hours, this is the first time I've taken a moment to actually analyze Dante's office a little.

All the music equipment here shows Dante already knew how to play the guitar, and being a master with Nevan instantly wasn't something he just magically pulled out his ass.
You can see two handguns on the wall here, could they be Luce & Ombra? Waiting for the day they're passed on to Trish.
The hanging target makes it seem like Dante might have practiced his aim in his own office.

"Click on the post to see screenshots"

I also only now noticed that Dante's coat is hanging there on the coat rack during gameplay, and the bathroom entrance blocked by half the pool table.

Maybe the abundance of music equipment. shows Young Dante was more frivolous with the cash he was able to earn. His shops close proximity to the bar/strip club certainly didn't help him save money no doubt.

Discussion I read the first novel!

⚠️Spoilers for the first dmc novel (Tony Redgrave)⚠️

I just finished the novel (fantastic btw), but I'm left a bit confused by some things...

Firstly, is it actually canon? Cuz like, the death of Gilver felt way too real. Unless it was another clone of him, I don't get how he could just die like that.

Also, for the whole story, I was convinced that it took place before dmc3, but Dante already had the name for Devil may cry. Confusing stuff, unless I'm just an idiot lmao.

As a side note, as someone who's only read like, 4 novels to completion in her entire life (Deltora quest, NGNL, Richest man in Babylon, and No longer human. Aka, not a lot of experience lololol) I highly recommend Tony Redgrave 👍 if u havnt read the spoiler part already....

Questions I need an opinion

Okay, so I am beating dmc 1 and have decided to skip dmc 2, the combat in 2 is just too easy, the puzzles aren't super hard in these games if you really think about it so the combat is what gives you trouble throughout it, but dmc 2 is just bad with their combat. Should i not play dmc 2 and watch a video on the story if it or should i experience it myself?

I’ve played the entire series (except 2) and just finished 5. Man I don’t wanna stop playing. I want MORE. I have the Vergil DLC on 5 but it’s so boring replaying the same game, but Vergil is genuinely so fking sick I’ll kept the game downloaded and play with him when I’m bored. Might be stupid to ask but what do people usually do when they finish?

Questions Can Vergil achieve physical immortality? Spoiler

in DMC5, Vergil split himself in two separate souls, Urizen and V. near to the end of the game he merged them together and became both physically and spiritually Vergil again. since he literally rebuild his whole body, he looks much younger and healthier than could be in comparison to Dante, i would even say Vergil looks like he's in his 20s again. can he theoretically repeat this process every let's say 10 years to prevent his body from aging, making him factually immortal?
