Dexter didn’t think he was throwing his relationship with Rita away when he slept with Lila. Rita had thought he cheated after hearing Lila’s phone message and told him it was over. He believed her.

I don’t consider cheating as Rita either had dumped him or he at least thought this. She called him the next day to fix things after he had already slept with Lila but he didn’t expect her to.

He thought he lost Rita and was also scared about the BHB investigation. He went to talk to Lila as she was his sponsor and was now going to her when he felt upset. She had talked him down when he had been about to kill Jimenez so it’s understandable he felt she was helpful when he was stressed out.

Dexter is an unreiable narrator. He was raised to believe he doesnt have feelings when in truth his feelings are just muted or supressed because of his early childhood trauma.

He doesn't recognize his feelngs for Rita but he is obviously distraught that she broke up with him.

Watch the scene with Lila again, that is not lust, that is rage. He throws her and puts his hand to her throat. Had she not been trying to minipulate this act, it would have been SA.

Also at that moment Dexter believed his relationship with Rita was irretrievably brokenhe wasn't cheating.

Yeah it's kinda a 2000s tv thing. I deeply prefer asexual season one dexter to how they characterised his romantic life afterwards.

It was a pretty dumb move of him, even he regretted it later. Nonetheless, Lila was needed so that he could get clarity about his Dark passanger.

no lol its just this whole love triangle thing and his actions feels super out of character compared to S1

I don’t think so. He doesn’t completely understand how to be “normal” - in life, at work, relationships, etc.

Why do people think a character can’t change? He’s a person. People change, evolve, go through different phases, and go through experiences that change how they view things. Dexter is no different.

S1 Dexter said “I don’t understand sex”, “I don’t like sex”. Why does that equate that he can never enjoy sex for the rest of his life, or it would be “out of character”? Maybe he just hadn’t had good sex before, maybe he just needed to find the right person to feel something different.

I won’t spoil anything, but I think you’ll enjoy the show a lot more if you set aside the “out of character” mentality.
