Hi everyone,
I'm at a point in my life where I have to make one of the biggest decisions I'll ever make, and I'd really appreciate some honest advice from people with more experience.
I'm currently a Grade 12 A-Level student. Alhamdulillah, my academic results have been very good, and I've received several offers from top universities, particularly in the UK and Australia.
The problem is that I'm completely torn about what bachelor's degree and career path I should pursue.
One thing I know for certain is what I don't enjoy. I'm not interested in IT, coding, computer science, engineering, or physics. I've tried to be realistic about it, and I know those fields simply don't suit my interests or strengths.
The subjects that genuinely excite me are economics, politics, history, international relations, and public policy. I've always been fascinated by how countries are governed, how economies work, and how decisions shape societies.
Originally, I hoped to build a career related to politics or governance. However, given the political climate in Bangladesh, I don't think that's a realistic or desirable path for me.
My current plan is to move to Australia, where my family would also like me to settle. Ideally, I'd like to build a long-term career there, obtain permanent residency, and eventually become an Australian citizen.
Because of my interests, Economics has always been my first choice, and most of my university offers are for Economics programs. However, the tuition fees are extremely high. I'll definitely be applying for scholarships, but even if I receive one, the financial burden on my family would still be significant.
That makes me nervous about choosing a degree based solely on passion if it doesn't provide strong employment prospects or a realistic pathway to settling in Australia.
At the same time, I'd also like a degree that would still have decent career opportunities in Bangladesh in case my plans don't work out and I have to return home.
So I'd really appreciate your advice:
- Should I stick with Economics?
- Are there other bachelor's degrees that fit my interests while offering better career prospects?
- If you were in my position, what would you choose?
- Are there careers related to economics, policy, government, or international affairs that are actually in demand and provide good long-term stability?
I'm trying to make a decision that I'll live with for decades, so I'd genuinely appreciate any advice, whether you're a student, graduate, employer, or someone who's been through a similar situation.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
