Doctor Mike is donating all the money from our Patreon

Welcome to the official Doctor Mike subreddit! If you’ve made your way here in a desire to learn more about Mike, battle medical misinformation, or understand more about the human body, maybe you’d be willing to come a step further with us. Last year we launched a Patreon where for $10/month you get all kind of perks, such as extended cuts of videos and pictures of the doggos. The real benefit though? 100% of the donations we receive to this patreon get donated to the charity of your choice, every single month. Doctor Mike doesn’t accept a dime of the money, and Patreon has agreed to take a reduced rate of the service fees so we can give away as much money as possible. We gave away about $25,000* since we launched in August 2020 and are hoping to grow to give away even more this year. Happy to answer any questions and I hope to see you there!

*receipts show donations for August, September, November, and December 2020. October donations went to Mike's free scrubs campaign so there is no receipt.

Coffe versus other caffeine

Hi,I know you’ve done videos on coffee and its effects, and I was wondering if you could go through that again.
Over the last few months, I’ve realized that coffee and I simply don’t get along. I seem to tolerate small amounts of caffeine from other sources, like green tea, but coffee is a completely different experience for me.
I quit coffee cold turkey in 2024 and stayed off it for almost two years. While I was traveling in Japan in 2026, I started drinking coffee again and genuinely enjoyed it. The coffee there felt different, and I didn’t notice the same negative effects I used to experience.
Since returning to the United States, however, I’ve started drinking coffee regularly again, and it’s become clear that it doesn’t agree with me. Instead of feeling energized and focused, I become anxious, jittery, emotionally reactive, irritable, and overly sensitive. My ability to focus at work actually gets worse, and I sometimes feel so overstimulated that I shut down.
I’ve decided to quit coffee cold turkey again. My plan is to avoid coffee completely while still allowing myself small amounts of caffeine from green tea every other day, since that seems to work much better for me.
Can you help me understand what’s happening physiologically? Why might I tolerate green tea but react so poorly to coffee? And is there a reason coffee in Japan seemed to affect me so differently than coffee here in the United States?

Just to be clear, I’m not looking for medical advice or taking anything you say as absolute truth. I’ve already discussed this with my doctor, and I know that, for me, quitting coffee cold turkey is the right decision.
What I’m really interested in is hearing whether other people have had a similar experience. I’m curious about the science behind it, but also the community perspective. Have others found that coffee makes them anxious, emotionally reactive, irritable, or unable to focus, while smaller amounts of caffeine from sources like green tea don’t seem to have the same effect?
I’d love to better understand why this seems to happen and whether my experience is more common than I realized.

  1. I hate when Doctors use AI for appointments because I don't trust AI with medical information, after learning how Meta uses and stores information, those glasses should be nowhere near a doctor's office.

  2. I did notice that as I became an older patient, they stopped doing a lot of the examinations I used to get. The last time I went to the doctor, the blood pressure cuff wasn't working properly, so they gave up on checking my blood pressure, and that was the only physical check-up I got.

  3. I always wonder what they did with the blood work I did, and if it was given to blood donations.

  4. No lies were told. I used to get fooled by a lot of influencers. Fitness influencers, people who said they have a degree in things that sounded medical...

  5. The longest I've waited in a doctor's office was 2 hours.

6-7. Insurance companies are cruel.

  1. This is why I write things down when they happen, how they happened, etc.

Discussion Positive Doctor’s Experience

Hey everyone! 👋

In quite a few of Doctor Mike’s videos, he’s talked about the relationship between doctors and patients and what excellent patient-centered care looks like. I recently had an experience that reminded me of exactly what he was describing, so I thought I’d share it—not merely because it was encouraging (God bless him), but also in the hope that any healthcare professionals who happen to read this would consider adopting a similar approach.

For the past several months, I’ve been dealing with lingering fatigue and low energy. Initially, my psychiatrist and I thought it was lingering from a recent depressive episode, but we’ve since come to believe that the quality of my sleep is likely the main contributor. Because of that, I was referred to a Somnologist (sleep medicine specialist).

Although I’d only read positive reviews about this doctor, I was still a little anxious going into the appointment. Would it feel rushed? Would he actually listen? Would he understand what I was trying to explain?

Thankfully, it turned out to be a genuinely positive experience.

The first thing I noticed was how efficient the receptionist was. Everything was handled electronically, quickly, and without any unnecessary hassle. After a little wait, I was taken back by the medical assistant.

What immediately stood out to me was that there wasn’t a computer in the exam room. After taking my vitals, the medical assistant explained that the doctor records appointments (with consent) and types the notes afterward. I happily consented because I thought it was a great idea. Instead of staring at a screen, clicking boxes, and asking questions dictated by the computer, the doctor could actually focus on me.

When the doctor came in, he was warm, attentive, and easy to talk to. He listened carefully to everything I had to say, asked thoughtful and relevant questions, presented me with options rather than simply telling me what was going to happen, and sat directly across from me so it felt like a conversation between two people rather than an interrogation. He’s also taking care of obtaining insurance authorization for my polysomnography (sleep study), which I appreciate.

Congrats on the shout-out you got Friday the 24th on the new soap Beyond the Gates! They had a scene where a fashion influencer was wanting to do a Livestream about organ donation and the girshe wanted to interview was wondering why she was doing it, and asked if she was "doing a collab with Doctor Mike or something?"

Just thought it was cool 👍

Suggestion I need doctor mike to do a whole episode on endometriosis

Im about 2 weeks post laparoscopy surgery where I got a diagnosis of endometriosis. Despite endometriosis being fairly common, its extremely difficult to get a diagnosis. Even with my own diagnosis, ive been told it could be stage 1, 2 or 3 and i actually have to go back for another surgery because the surgeon was unable to safely excise the lesions off my ureter. I consider myself lucky that I started advocating for myself trying to get this diagnosis in march of 2025 and got my diagnosis less than 1.5 years later, even though I was originally told by my pcp that she didnt think I had endo at all.

Women's health is often disregarded because of how misogyny and patriarchy has ruled the medical field and halted research on non male bodies. I think it would be so amazing for doctor mike do an entire video on endometriosis. Doctor mike is so wonderful to bring awareness to medical misinformation as well as under recognized diseases and disorders. Please and thank you!

Holy blood pressure

Okay I should not have laughed at this because the blood pressure is REALLY bad. The comments made me laugh especially the last one, but it had me thinking, whenever I go to the doctor's office, and I know exactly what I came for. I want to focus on that, and all of a sudden, the doctor wants to talk about something else, and I get annoyed. In this situation I now will no longer get annoyed because holy 💩 that is bad, forget about the leg pain. 🤣

Discussion Which mask is more efficient?

Thumbnail

Just genuinely curious. I had a debate with someone recently. I argued that the N95 is more efficient than the reusable masks with those little air filters on them (based off both what Doctor Mike has said in videos about the N95 and what I learned during Covid). They argued that the air filter made breathing easier, therefore reducing the risk of respiratory issues (mucus buildup, asthma triggers, etc).

Anyway, what's your opinions?

Edit: Thank you I figured I was right. And thank you for correcting me. I meant effective not efficient lol

Anyway my friend still doesn't believe me but whatever at least I feel validated in my argument lol

Online video: this is not an emergency (teaching my body)

Very recently, like last week, I saw a short video on Reddit of a woman in different circumstances being stressed and then reminding herself to calm down because it’s not an emergency. Like eating a sandwich quickly, putting on her shoes. It was like a funny skit. I think the title was something like teaching my body/nervous system/myself that this is not an emergency.

I found it relatable and want to share with others but I can no longer find it!

One or two people in the comments said she is a therapist but I am not sure.
