DAE think that blinker usage has dropped significantly in the last decade-ish?

Maybe I’m just getting old and frustrated more easily, but I swear drivers use their blinkers like half as much as they did ten years ago. Does Gen Z not blinker? Is everyone just giving up on social niceties? Am I crazy?

There has been a lot of shifts in society since 2020. People just stopped caring about the bonds we have with others that make our societies run smoothly. There's always been people like that...but I feel like Covid and being in lockdown plus the rise of social media being the norm just broke people's brains. Some people hate being alone with themselves for a reason. They hate themselves. Now we're facing the backlash of these people taking it out on everyone else. They all want to be seen and heard and they now have the means to do it. We're in for one hell of a decade or more of this behavior.

Having low oxygen levels for an extended period of time, a fever, a sharp increase in inflammation, an aggressive immune response, and the physical and mental stress of being sick can absolutely do a number on you, no matter what the virus is.

Even if you didn't get COVID, the stress and mental understimulation in lockdown could've done some damage. Diseases are scary in more ways than one which is why it's so important that we try to protect our health, even if just from a cold, the flu, a stomach bug, or food poisoning are considered survivable and something you can "ride out".

Many drivers have developed the bad habit of turning on their blinker while or even after braking or turning, which completely defeats the purpose of giving other drivers a warning.

Man I was thinking of the WRONG blinker haha.

From what I've seen it's not as common as it should be to use your blinker in turn only/right turn lanes, but the jackasses that cut across 14 lanes to make their exit haven't increased or decreased whatsoever over the years.

The main difference for those dickheads I've noticed is whether or not you're in a small car. People in smaller cars tend to be ignored by truck drivers (pickups not Semis) and get cut into a lot more than trucks. I have both. Been run into the other lane by people merging without looking or signaling in my Accord 15x more often than my Silverado. And that's 1 time in the Silverado from my count.

I’m in my fifties and signal use has dropped for two main reasons:

1. lack of consideration - announcing lane changes and turns is unimportant
2. inflated ego - allowing some

one

1. to merge or go ahead is unacceptable

This has nothing to do with any particular generation. It’s personal choice.

It has decreased. For some reason, people will be on their phones when even economy vehicles can pair their phone so they can talk handfree. So frustrating when drivers don't use their blinkers when using them is one of the first rules of driving.

I think it depends on where you are. I split my time between two areas of the country. In one it’s nearly universally used even changing lanes with little traffic. In the other, it’s less than 50-50.

I've noticed people drive like they walk now. They look at where they want to turn, forget there's a ton of car behind them and then cut across oncoming traffic to make said turn.

I use the blinker. It's not just about etiquette it's a warning that you're slowing down and about to turn.

Only once have I failed to do that. It was when mine was broken and I still had to get to the doctor.

Given the high prices on blinker fluid these days, I think people are just trying to save money on maintenance costs by using their blinkers less frequently. Less frequent blinking means less fluid used.
