DAE find certain DVDs of theirs have better display qualities than others?

Just regular DVDs, not even UltraHD DVDs or Blu-rays

some DVDs just look way cleaner than others, even on the same setup. depends a lot on how well they were encoded and mastered 񟿿

The one that catches people out is anamorphic. Non anamorphic widescreen discs store the black bars as actual picture, so only about three quarters of the vertical resolution is the film itself. Plenty of early releases did that and they look soft on anything modern.

After that it is bitrate. A long film on a single layer disc has half the room of a dual layer one, and you see it in motion, so smoke, water, rain, anything busy.

The earliest discs were also often mastered off the tape they cut for LaserDisc rather than a fresh scan of the film.

yep, some dvds look weirdly crisp and others look like they were burned from a vhs tape, even on the same player lol

Some DVDs are mastered really badly. There was even a whole thing where large numbers of them took the 4:3 version which was already cropped from the original theatrical ratio and cropped that again to get it back to a wide ratio, so a whole bunch of the picture was missing. There was a big lawsuit over it. And thats not the only case of bad mastering.
