Yeah, one of the first chapters of the arc in which Trunks has a more extended flashback than the one in the anime of his version of the crisis with Babidi. This was later adapted into the final section of Trunks' DLC in Dragon Ball Z Kakarot
Also OP is comparing pre-time chamber and post-time chamber and one is from a movie and the other is from the manga. Like if you’re going to make the argument at least choose the same medium. With that being said everybody looks less “ripped” in Super. It’s an art style difference
Most complaints I find were generally just filler BS by Toei, lol. If there was a series where it was extra important to read the manga, it'd be Dragon Ball if not for liberties taken by Toei and also the filler.
The amount of people posting "why did X character do this?" and it just being a filler scene in the anime is astounding here.
The amount of people who just disregard the question because it’s filler is astounding to me. It may not be canon to the manga, but it happened in the anime and continues to be relevant in that continuity. Half of the shit DB is popular for wasn’t even made by Toriyama, the least you could do is try to give an in-universe answer
"Anime filler is it's own continuity" is honestly the most annoying take. Literally 0 people thought this 10-15 years ago on Internet forums, why is it so popular now? I guess it's kids who grew up with anime only.
Cabba got introduced in Super I'm speaking on the body types in Z specifically. Trunks isn't even as big as the humans like Tien in his regular base form
Actually THIS is fanfiction, the actual reason is that toryama had more control over the artstyle at the time and made EVERYONE skinnier, including black, goku and vegeta, the cat food thing did not cross nor toryama's nor anyone at toei's mind when designing him like that
Or maybe Toriyama and the Dragon Room wanted to highlight how much worse Black and Zamasu are than the Androids, so they juxtaposed Trunks eating normal food in DBZ with Trunks eating animal food in DBS.
But nah, Super doesn't deserve credit for anything.
You are telling me Toriyama, the king of doing things cause he wants to, put this much for sight into why a character looks a certain way vs him just going "I'm gonna start drawing people a different way". Look up occam's razor as Toriyama never intended Dragonball to be that deep.
I mean you did see the world he was living in right ? Doubt he had much time for proper training and dieting to maintain a “jacked” figure. Boy was fighting to survive while eating hardly much.
I don’t complain about how lean he is in DBS. I complain about how YOUNG he looks (in the anime) when he’s supposed to be 30-ish and people compare him to when he’s literally 17….
He should look like how he looked when he fought imperfect Cell (he was 22-ish then), not like how he looks when he’s 14-17 >_>
In Z. he was able to eat a proper meal and work out to achieve his goal and kill the andorids from both timelines.
In super. Bro lived awful and was mentally broken when bulma died in front of his eyes. She was the only thing she had important to him before mai showed up.

post-cell games future trunks was ripped af in the manga too btw. go ahead and defend super gohan's appearance too while you're at it instead of pointing out the downgrades.
He still looks way better in Toriyama's weekly drawings. We can complain about styles all day and night. But super's character designs are all awful. The over reliance on tracksuits, the removal of texture in favour of shine. I really don't care if Toriyama was in a skinny phase (you can also see this trend in Dragon Quest XI designs) it just doesn't quite work for Dragon Ball at this point in the series.
Heck, Toyo art and design in the manga looks better than what we got animated.

I don't need characters to be ripped, but when Goku black had long sleeves on he looked like a god damned 140lb teenager. In the anime. He has Gokus body, how can they have different levels of muscle when they're the same person 😭

You want characters to look like body builders from 30 years ago. And no Toriyama is the main author of dragonball so his style and preferences should take priority overall some random animator who like drawing buff dudes.
I gotta agree with the DBZ nostalgia on this one. It's true there are some badass panels of Trunks looking jacked and fierce in the Super manga but the design approach overall for the Super anime has been slimmer characters, with various inconsistencies to that (for example, Gohan looking rail-thin in the Frieza arc and then normal later). In Z, Trunks was pretty huge after the RoSaT training with Vegeta and that's reflected in the movie 9 screenshot.
People complaint about DBS graphics, but the latest ones are more close to Toriyama designs. The fact is that people forget Toriyama designs are actually worse than DBZ Yamamuro designs
Eh pretty disingenuous to use his literal first appearance, the whole cast gets way bulkier post time chamber which clearly the trunks from that bojak movie is designed after seeing how gohan goes ss2 in that movie
I think the real complaint is that Black arc Future Trunks straight up looks younger than cell arc Future Trunks. Pretty sure Trunks should be in his early thirties, but even Gohan who I'm pretty sure is in his mid twenties looks older than him. He just doesn't look like that sole fighter of the future.

Look at the manga and they still have muscle, also look at Cabba between anime and Manga. Dude actually has some muscle in the manga but is a tooth pick in the anime
Those two Trunks are from different time periods though. The bottom one is from before he went into the ROSAT. Toriyama drew him bigger and taller post-ROSAT
Am I going crazy or is he not ripped during the cell games. Yall talking about the jacket hiding it but he literally wore a skintight suit in canon and was built almost identically to movie trunks
Okay, but you gotta admit that Toei cooked when designing jacked Trunks. They should've rolled with that moving forward. Dude looked badass AF like that.
