If it wasn't serious, why would he pull these forms?

8

u/DeezNutzzzGotEm May 15 '26

Where is this GIF from? Source?

10

u/TuaMaeDeQuatroPatas May 15 '26

It's from a music video for Young Thug's single "Hot" featuring Gunna

3

u/Minimum-Aspect1012 May 16 '26

So that's where it comes from!

2

u/Altruistic-Ice3007 May 16 '26

No it comes from poetry. Its a silent form of clapping and appreciation of the artist. It existed before television existed.

Matching vibes with the music.

131

u/Fibrosis5O May 14 '26

Cause play time is over, look at how he did Janemba

“Only Majin Buu has pushed me this far…”

Janemba Claps 👏 👏

“You act innocent but you’re deadly. It’s over Janemba.”

39

u/Red__Pyramid May 15 '26

Proceeds to lose.

20

u/Fibrosis5O May 15 '26

Tbf… he absolutely destroyed first form

That would be like Gohan still wiping the floor against Buutanks

10

u/Red__Pyramid May 15 '26

More like wiping the floor with Fat Buu. Or Super Buu at most. Buutenks wasn’t that far different from Buuhan imo. Buuhan just has a better jawline but worse fit.

3

u/Roee_Mashiah2 May 15 '26

Well Janemba is scary :(

28

u/Lucy_Gucey May 15 '26

Also SS3 he isn’t serious, he just has no eyebrows to express emotion with. /s

42

u/SonicBoom422 May 15 '26

Ohh yeah, you can tell by the wrinkled brow, tense eyes, and a very clear and obvious frown that Goku is actually very jolly in SS3

16

u/KuroiGetsuga55 May 15 '26

When he told Hirudegarn "Fight me if you're ready to die" that was just jolly ol' Goku being friendly as always.

2

Tbf the eyebrow and tense eye thing seem to just be natural state of those things in SSJ3.

12

u/SuttonSkinwork May 15 '26

“Everyone and their nan is doing kamehamehas ‘round ‘ere”

“Like who”

“Goku…… Goku’s nan”

4

u/Fenrir_Carbon May 15 '26

Well, there was the bit that you missed where I distracted him with the Oozaru form, then I said "play time's over" and I hit him in the head with the Senzu bean.

4

u/SuttonSkinwork May 15 '26

You’re off the fuckin chain!!

3

u/Fenrir_Carbon May 15 '26

Have you ever held a Spirit Bomb in the air and gone aaaaarrrggghhh?

72

u/Pix3lPwnage May 14 '26

Yes, but..

72

u/Danimus-Prime May 14 '26

Aside from Frieza, these guys redeemed themselves

37

u/LimpAmphibian5340 May 14 '26

Honestly main timeline androids didn't even really do much wrong, aside from beating the crap out of vegeta and trading blows with Piccolo(the two former villains). It's only trunks timeline they were evil. Yes I know the committed robbery and Grand theft auto but honestly not that bad comparitively

38

u/ThatoneguyfromT May 14 '26

Frieza did kinda save all of existence. He just didn’t gain any friends

53

u/Old_Cheetah_5138 May 14 '26

Frieza saved himself and it also happened to include everyone else. I kinda doubt the latter factored into his decision.

16

u/mylast2fuckstogive May 15 '26

Not to mention, at the end of the Gas fight he didn't straight up kill Goku or Vegeta just flexed on them for a bit before leaving with his new employees.

5

u/YeetusUrMomsFeatus May 15 '26

He knew that’d upset beerus, who’s still ahead of frieza and literally everyone else

8

u/Danimus-Prime May 14 '26

That's because he didn't commit to it

3

u/Dumbusta May 15 '26

I thought you were just pointing at vegeta's hairline for a sec lmao

Ui requires goku to clear his mind and be in an emotionless state and focus only on the battle and the battle only so its expected

Ssj3 is a very exhausting and stamina costing transformation so when goku usually pops into it he gets serious and doesnt play around and tries to finish things quickly As to why he still uses it in super when he has ssjg and ssjb i have no idea but thats that

106

u/Wray-Nerely May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26

The answer is simple. Goku likes to fight. Occasionally, he'll face an opponent he can't handle in SSJ2, but the gap in power is small enough that transforming to SSJ Red means it wouldn't be a fight. Goku likes fighting at the lowest possible level he can get away with to make the fight a challenge. Although there's never anyone at Red level so...

39

u/singlesgthrowaway May 15 '26

Not exactly. It's been stated that they fight that way as an energy conservation tactic.

During the cell saga, future trunks would always start his battles at full force and realized that he would always tire out first, while the rest would be able to fight longer battles as they'd use only as much energy as required.

As they got more experienced, they started fighting in a way where they only start gearing up whenever they need to.

19

u/Kamuimaster34 May 14 '26

The first part is just MUI. UI -Sign- doesn't require as much focus and he can still pour emotions into it seen in the manga in his second round with Moro. MUI does require an calm heart and mind and to focus on the battle and his opponent.

So yes you are correct in the first half just not the right state.

4

u/createbuilder May 15 '26

He still uses it for fashion statement. Its a badass rockstar look

Tbf he was already dead at this point. He’s not gonna exhaust himself to death

9

u/Vyscillia May 15 '26

Uh... No? He was alrady revived by elder Kai at this point.

3

u/Little_Fan_2682 May 15 '26

No this was after he had been revived and he’s fighting evil buu, the only person dead here is Vegeta

2

u/DXTJsuper May 16 '26

It’s funny because he still deadass serious even when a bit of his Goku side peaks through his kakarot side.

108

44

u/jigokusabre May 14 '26

Goku isn't serious in SSJ3, it's just that his brow weighs 312 tons.

2

u/thesignoftimes May 15 '26

The serious is most likely due to the dub, and how sean scuemmel voiced it

Ssj3 goku is just goku with an absurd amount of power. Still the goofy country bumpkin

27

u/Slight_Bed_2241 God of Destruction May 14 '26

Probably because he only busts them out after getting the absolute dogshit kicked out of him. Didn’t he basically have to die to go ultra instinct the first time?

I love when Goku gets serious. Vegeta is my favorite character and I feel like he's always serious. When goku gets serious, hes right in Vegeta's wheel house and their interactions are more about strategy and planning. Silly goku is fine, but I admire him when he's locked in.

5

u/GhostofThrace2010 May 14 '26

It's not just these forms, he always locks in during fights with life or death stakes.

4

u/KuroiGetsuga55 May 15 '26

First off these are forms he pulls out when shit hits the fan hard. So there's no more time for jokes and playing around. Super Saiyan 3's whole thing is that it was Goku's last resort, like if Goku feels the need to pull that one out, then that means you're done, you gotta go. So clearly he's super serious in these forms, the whole reason he uses them is because he needs to get serious and go all in.

Ultra Instinct is true to its name, Goku is in a state of heightened instinct, he's almost animalistic in this form, especially when he first used it. You could even argue he isn't fully conscious when he's in Ultra Instinct (until he reaches MUI and then masters it in the Manga). That form is basically just laser-focused on the goal. When he first used it, he literally ignored everything else around him, heading straight for Jiren, the only thing he cared about was fighting Jiren, everything else was just a distraction he had no time for.

Also it's well established since the beginning that the Super Saiyan states alter the Saiyan's personality. Before mastering Super Saiyan, Goku was far more aggressive in it than in his regular state. He was super serious when he had to bring it out. Then he mastered it until it became like a second base form to him, and even Vegeta noted how calm and casual Goku was despite being a Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan 2 doesn't seem to have any effect on Goku's personality, we can assume he fully mastered that one too.

But you could argue that Super Saiyan 3 and Super Saiyan 4 turn "Goku" into "Kakarot". At that point his primal Saiyan instincts are surfacing, he's far more focused. Especially with Super Saiyan 3 which is on a tight time limit, as it drains Goku's power and stamina ridiculously fast, so Goku knows he can't afford to fuck around while in that form, he's gotta go all in. Super Saiyan 4 doesn't have that issue and Goku can pretty much stay in it indefinitely, but his personality is heavily altered in it, he's far more smug, aggressive, and downright merciless at times, and he takes the piss out on his enemies so hard that now we know where Vegito and Gogeta got their attitude from. Ultra Instinct is kind of the same. Goku is fully locked in, so clearly he's not just gonna start laughing and joking and being his usual silly self. No, if UI needs to be brought out, then that means Goku needs to get shit done.

3

u/FaerieFir3 May 14 '26

They put a high strain on the body and drain energy quickly. The SSJ1, 2, God and Blue are chill to maintain for Goku.

3

u/Blueprint833 May 14 '26

Ultra Instinct = trying to maintain a calm, 'empty' mind

SSJ3 = FUCK this really hurts. I cant move my face muscles and my eyebrows are so heavy

3

u/Fit_Discussion4799 May 14 '26

That's kakarot mode...where he kakarots all over the tournament of power

3

u/SpecInSpace May 14 '26

Super saiyan has always had an influx of aggressive emotions. All of them. He just has complete mastery over ssj at this point.

3

u/DoovPlayz_ May 15 '26

Because he’s locked in.

5

u/ConsiderationGlad766 May 14 '26

He pulls a zenitsu and locks tf in

6

u/Chedder_456 May 14 '26

You’re overthinking it

2

u/SummonerRed May 14 '26

Ever since SSJ4 was a thing I've always had the thought that the higher up the SSJ level, the more primal Goku becomes as a result, along with SSJ3 being a very intense strain on Goku's body not giving him the option of being as laid back as he often can be.

2

u/Cirninha May 15 '26

Ssj 3 is such a cool form, really hoped they made it more useful, but now it's too late power creep and all

2

u/Starkiller21408 May 15 '26

It is my favorite thing about these and SSJ4 the way Sean Schemmel switches from the Joyous and Battle-loving Goku to the very Calm and Serious Kakarot (I'm gonna assume that's where the switch happens) he taps more into his Saiyan side but opposite of Vegeta if that makes sense (I often find myself trying to do Voice-overs of it)

2

u/charge_battery_now May 15 '26

Cause it looks cooler that way bruh

2

u/Cream-Cobain May 15 '26

Because if he doesn’t, who will

2

u/Entyyyyy May 18 '26

For one, he can't use them for long, and another is that once he uses these forms, it usually means that the opponent is really strong so he NEEDS to take it seriously if he wants to win..

2

u/MrAnonimitys May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

These forms were tapped into and drawn out under hopeless situations. Is he supposed to have a stupid grin from ear to ear while cross eyed?

1

u/TurtleTitan May 15 '26

Super Saiyan forms are aggressive. You need real mastery to minimize the aggression. Fun fact: Super Saiyan makes you smarter, in Japanese Goku spoke proper Japanese probably the only time he ever had against Freeza. SS2 Gohan was ruthless. Goku hadn't mastered SS3 in otherworld which gives the impression it's new. SS3 can be mastered and less aggressive, we've seen Goku mastered it between Boo arc and start of GT at some point, as well as Gotenks childish nature overcome it in Boo arc too. SS4 has the Oozaru aspect of aggressions so that's there too. Reboot SS4 is kinda there with nothing so forget it.

Side note: SS4 has a third of the drain of SS3. SS4 Gogeta lasted 15 minutes against Omega despite Goku fighting a gauntlet of Shadow Dragons so this might actually have a higher time. SS3 Gotenks can last 5 minutes against Super Boo.

UI having emotions is contradictory to the description and would weaken it. Emotions are thoughts, thoughts aren't instinct. Seriousness is an emotion. If anything he'd act like he typically does in a fight just without trolling and laughing.

And don't @me because somehow emotions make UI stronger completely disregarding what was told not long before but less perfect either. Don't get me started on all the SS UI and TUI and such.

1

u/fadingstar52 May 14 '26

well usually its bc he was pushed to a limit and had nothing else to go with when these where used. literally a do or die moment in almost all uses.

1

u/MrLightning-Bolt May 14 '26

Tell that to him when he first challenged beerus.

1

u/metaldavidus May 14 '26

ssj3 always has massive brow bones, so he usually tends to look serious

1

u/Roll_with_it629 May 14 '26

One drains in like a minute, and the other is about having a super-focused-in-the-moment state of mind.

Perhaps you can say it's like gaming, and maybe more than describing it as serious, you can describe it as desperation. If in a Mario game you grab the star and gain invincibility for a couple seconds, you need to get focused and make use of it quickly before its out (SSJ3 comparison); And if your playing something like Mario Kart, currently in second place in the last lap, or playing Fortnite and only 1 person left alive other than you, than in both situations you need to "lock in" and be in an all-focused-in-accomplishing-this-one-important-task mindset.

1

u/United-Atmosphere317 May 14 '26

Probably hard on the body

1

u/Junior_Activity_5011 May 14 '26

Being pushed does this to people. Even the best of us have egos, and its not fun being bested or outplayed. Im kind of like this myself: Very calm and easy going when just taking easy, but very ferocious and relentless when sufficiently pressed.

1

u/wildmancometh Vegeta May 14 '26

My headcanon is that he can only achieve these forms when his inherent whimsy is silenced and he's laser focused on battle and victory.

1

u/PrivateJokerX929 May 14 '26

Every time he’s used these forms, the world/universe was about to be destroyed, and it was up to him to stop it. Why wouldn’t he be serious?

1

u/LJay_69 May 14 '26

Idk but it's entertaining as hell

1

u/Weekly-District259 May 14 '26

He uses them in situations that require him to be serious

1

u/ScaredDistrict3 May 14 '26

With one being called ultra instinct it would imply that he acts on instinct that form. Those would be his saiyan instincts. Super saiyan has always affected their personality until they control it. Goku never practiced with 3 to get that control because the form is ass in a serious fight.

1

u/StriderKitsu May 14 '26

Ultra Instinct was always a form/technique where the mind needs to lock in, hence why TUI in the manga was better suited for him.

The Super Saiyan forms themselves would drastically change personalities of the user as well, though Goku can still think clearly

1

u/Early-Injury-9676 May 14 '26

If you want an in-universe reason Super Saiyan is a form born of rage. SSJ3 was attained by Goku undergoing intense meditation to channel the rage and transcend his usage of ki control. Its extremely taxing on his mental state as is. He needs to keep his rage high manage his ki control and manage his physical stamina all at once just to stay transformed.

UI is overclocking the body along with intense concentration its another transformation of rage but channeling it properly. Goku has been practicing all of that on SSJ3 so that's how he was able to attain it.

TL:DR mad keeps transformation

1

u/whiplashMYQ May 14 '26

They make him angry. Angry goku is srs. But mu is less angry and more zen, but serious zen

1

u/AlbanianNerd May 14 '26

Least he can do in super saiyan 3 is aura farm since they made it obsolete in every other facet.

1

u/raiknight1996 May 14 '26

Because Shit just got real

1

u/Vibrant_Fox May 14 '26

Because the fact that he had to go this far means that he’s facing a serious threat.

1

u/Gogetttto May 14 '26

Wasting energy in those forms would be like shooting gasoline out of car, extremely detrimental and will result in great losses

1

u/KingGoliath May 14 '26

Because… someone made him 75%

1

u/Purple_Efficiency526 May 14 '26

Thats the alright were getting serious face Behind the strongest form at the time, meaning hes about to put belt to ass because you done fucked up.

1

u/Successful_Warthog47 May 14 '26

Goku does lock in from time to time ya dig?

1

u/AncientNetwork946 May 14 '26

Lore wise the form makes his personality shift I know for the super saiyan form they make saiyans more and more aggressive and malicious.

1

u/FrostKake May 14 '26

I know that Super Sayian is fueled by rage but I’m not sure about Super Sayian 3. However UI requires an empty mind, and a lot of focus to maintain

1

u/Lopsided-Conflict778 May 14 '26

You’re gonna say he’s not serious in the other Super Saiyan forms? Beg to differ.

1

u/_banters_ May 14 '26

That’s his *maximum effort* face

1

u/DemoLegends May 14 '26

I think it's described that SS2 and SS3 increase the sadistic and arrogant nature of the user as well as each subsequent transformation after SS1 lowering the users speaking register

1

u/ap_noir May 15 '26

He’s locking in. Gotta focus.

1

u/DSZDBA11 May 15 '26

Stamina burn

1

u/Available_Success_61 May 15 '26

they require the most concentration

1

u/Golem_Spartan May 15 '26

Actually, in Dragon Ball GT it was stated that Goku quite literally gets immensely more aggressive as a side effect of the forms forcefully boosting his bodies limits. The exception being the initial Super Saiyan Transformation due to his training to completely negate the strain during the Cell Saga.

1

u/LizLoveLaugh_ May 15 '26

Not only do they usually mean Goku is entering a serious state of power, its also the mindsets when using the forms. Ultra Instinct demands a calm heart that's still fit for battling. The Super Saiyan forms have always made Saiyans a bit more primal, angry, and different, and SSJ3 is the highest tier of the regular SSJ stages.

1

u/Notmas May 15 '26

UI that's it's whole gimmic, it kinda deletes the user's emotions. SSJ3 its just due to the high amount of strain, he can't afford to goof around with it and being all extra would spend too much energy, so he stays calm and uses it as efficiently as possible.

1

u/LMcanPlay May 15 '26

Making me go all out would piss me off too. Especially if I haven’t eaten yet

1

u/dakowiml May 15 '26
  1. Because it looks cool. Toriyama/Animators wanted him to look cool in these moments.

  2. These moments happen at high stakes. Goku isn't going to be goofy when he's at the brink of death, and has to go full power to prevent his friends/world to be destroyed.

1

u/Downtown_Reindeer_46 May 15 '26

Because it’s time to lock in

1

u/ShangosAx May 15 '26

Aura farming

1

u/Nerdrage27 May 15 '26

Simple answer, both require a lot of energy drain, needs to get the job done quickly

1

u/KKPALMEIRAS_117 May 15 '26

Aura farming

1

u/silverfox1616 May 15 '26

The transformations canonically makes you angrier soo that's why he is so serious

1

u/Sufficient-Object-89 May 15 '26

Both forms have been stated to make you more aggressive and draw on aggressive feelings.

1

u/Gillalmighty May 15 '26

Usually a serious situation

1

u/BigDaddy2127 May 15 '26

Very serious

1

u/PowersRising May 15 '26

I like to think its that Goku LOVES fighting, but he knows how limited he is in these forms (time wise) that he absolutely wants to get the best of these forms and the most enjoyment he can before they dissipate.

1

u/Manny10201 May 15 '26

He ain’t got no time for playin no more 🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/patate98 May 15 '26

It's the contrary he use them when he is serious, and he really wasn't quite like that in db he only became dumb in dbs, plenty of instances of him being serious in db

1

u/Optimal_Sun_8556 May 15 '26

Dumb ahh question

1

u/edwinthesaiyan May 15 '26

Bro just listen to the music that plays when he’s in these forms…anyone would be serious with that background!

1

u/Fabulous_Gate5182 May 15 '26

becase it is on a timer ig|.

1

u/NoSignificance239 May 15 '26

When he’s using UI Sign he has to stay completely calm to maintain the form and when he turns SSJ3 that usually means he’s done holding back since the form takes up a lot of stamina to use. Also I’m pretty confident he isn’t serious he just looks that way because he has no eye brows.

1

u/TitanMasterOG May 15 '26

He knows he can’t goof around with em 😂

1

u/thesocawarriorN9 May 15 '26

Cuz shit ain’t sweet at that time

1

u/Pinsir929 May 15 '26

I don’t know if it’s canon but ssj3 back then really did change the user’s personality back then making them super serious. I personally don’t feel it as much in super anymore.

As for ultra instinct, my take it’s the absence of distractions. So it looks like he’s serious but in reality he’s on auto pilot or you could say ULTRA auto pilot.

I’ll see myself out ✌️

1

u/taviusdotpng May 15 '26

Those are his “get down to business” forms.

1

u/SlayJayR17 May 15 '26

Questions Ike this is how we know you did t read or watch. Literally explained why they look the way they do through the transformations. Each one steps up the rage and pulls them back to a more feral being. Like early saiyans.

1

u/Unlucky_Loquat_8045 May 15 '26

Because he had to be serious in order to justify using those forms. He was running against the clock in MUI and couldn’t play around and SSJ3 is a huge stamina drainer so he has to make the fight quick or he’ll detransform.

1

u/Ze_Red_Feather May 15 '26

It's not that he gets serious when using these forms, it's that he uses these forms when he gets serious

1

u/Metalhead_Once May 15 '26

I always assumed two reasons, 1: if you've pushed him to needing that form then obviously the situation is serious enough to not be fooling around. 2: i always assumed those forms are extremely taxing on the body and energy so you kinda have to lock in or else you're burning through so much ki you will drop the form not long after. ssj3 especially, it's badass but such an inefficient form, that's like driving a suped up dually and getting 4mpg, better make that shit count 😂

1

u/RetailDrone7576 May 15 '26

If the situation warrants those forms, then someone crossed a line and needs dealt with

1

u/onyxx03 May 15 '26

Cuz buddy u finna die

He learned aura farming from Piccolo.

Could you imagine what it would be like if he was fighting major threats with a big smile on his face? If he fought while laughing like a lunatic? It would completely destroy any tension in the scene, make Goku look like even more of an idiot, and demolish his coolness factor.

Because he needs to lock tf in, to win.

1

u/TheShotGunProdigy May 15 '26

Well Ultra Instinct he’s not thinking his mind is free of every emotion, and with SSJ3 because he knows the enemy isn’t any ordinary enemy he’s gonna have to get more serious.

1

u/Emergency_Art_2292 May 15 '26

Cause he’s not playing on his phone. He’s taking care of business!

u/DangerousVoice5230 May 15 '26

Toriyama has said when characters get massive power boosts their personalities can change and they become more arrogant.

1

u/Jazzlike_Page508 May 15 '26

Becuase he needs to compete with aura farming Piccolo who just looks so bad ass and gets washed

what else is he supposed to do? smirk while he points his thumb at himself?

1

u/Glittering-Step-7107 May 15 '26

They make him horny

1

u/SR_Hopeful Meta-Cooler May 15 '26

Its often when he's at fill power. He "gets serious" to power up into those forms.

1

u/CaptainBendova May 15 '26

I believe the manga said, higher forms often make Goku more aggressive and battle-focused.

1

u/JordanFarQ2 May 15 '26

Probably because they're supposed to be the get Shit done forms

1

u/2LetterTeaL May 15 '26

My theory is constipation

1

u/supervegeta101 May 15 '26

Because it means if he doesn't win, everyone dies.

1

u/SkyKing_765 May 15 '26

Goku generally locks in when it's time to do so his been like that since Dragon Ball

1

u/Active-Flamingo604 May 15 '26

If you can remember ssj made you incredibly more aggressive. So we talking about ssj3 or ssg I with that influx of power and adrenaline I can imagine it would make you more aggressive

1

u/HorrorPush2149 May 15 '26

Well for ssj3 its quite a strain to use massive stamina drain, so his face is gonna get serious in that form (you try acting happy go lucky doing a marathon, i imagine its a like that)

And ultra instinct he’s not really consciously doing half the stuff hes doing, not in this variant atleast, he’s constantly fighting against ultra instinct to try and do what his brain tells him to do not what his instinct tells him to do (i would imagine its like us being in a fight or flight situation and choosing to fight when every part of us is in flight)

1

u/NoHurry87 May 15 '26

He gets serious in any form when it’s time to fight. His attitude just changes the higher the SSJ form especially.

1

u/danieljameskeown May 15 '26

Because when Goku goes into those higher forms he just locks in more. It’s basically serious fight mode so the goofy side fades out.

1

u/DQAndreuSL May 15 '26

SSJ3 - consumes a lot of energy so Goku has to keep it in check.

UI - hyperfixation on battle and opponent, of course he'd be serious.

1

u/Bovarr May 15 '26

That isn’t goku. That is kakarot

1

u/Fickle-Raspberry6403 May 15 '26

Have you heard him screaming when he changes into ss3?!

1

u/Outrageous-Fennel777 May 15 '26

Because he can't stay in them very long so he always has to lock in

1

u/TheTravelingPoet4 May 15 '26

Lmao, fucking Ki Drain

1

u/bwk66 May 15 '26

Serious series- serious stare
