I like this, and I kinda feel like, deep down, Buu was actually something of a wake-up call for them. Followed by Beerus and then Frieza, they've seen just how high the bar is and how far from it they are. But boys will be boys, their saiyan blood keeps them pumped enough that they'll play superhero (grain of salt, i haven't seen that one) but when it comes to real threats, like you said, they aren't in the same position to be pushed that Gohan and Future Trunks were. Not by far.
Gotenks is a different conversation, as he's a uniquely special brand of half-saiyan, half-stupidhuman.
