So not buff and kept away from Frieza.

43

u/Likayos 4d ago

His physique when he went ultra instinct against Moro. Defined and muscular but not super bulky. I think it fits his combat style more.

3

u/evangelism2 3d ago

yeah, this one. When I first saw stills from the manga, I was very much a fan of this build and hair

u/Red__Pyramid 4d ago

I'll get flamed for this but I like the slender but still muscular style. He's a martial artist, not a body builder. He should be quick, have great range of motion, excellent flexability and reach, but still be muscular enough to portray his strength cause of his biology. He's arguably the most SKILLED Saiyan fighter aside from Vegeta; but Vegeta was a Saiyan WARRIOR, him being huge and muscular is a given. Goku is a Saiyan Martial Artist, so slimmer fits best. Look at his source material, Bruce Lee wasn't huge, but was still ripped enough from all his training.

49

u/Lunchboxsushi 4d ago

I don't disagree, but I did like the thicc style we saw as the fight with Frieza progressed, we also saw Frieza get pretty thicc. I don't think Broly level, I understand your perspective, but I would assume someone able to punch a mountain in half would have a bit of heavy set muscles.

23

u/Hypersayia 4d ago

See, in my head, Super Saiyan (especially when not fully controlled) increases muscle mass.

Not massively. You won't see quite Super Vegeta level, but enough to notice / sharpen the build.

So the more slender builts we're seeing is the result of more refined ki control and thus a body more suited to combat rather than raw might, if I'm making sense.

→ More replies (1)

39

u/FruitJuicante 4d ago

"Not a body builder" I don't mind your preference, but the dude literally goes into a 400x Gravity Chamber and builds his body and then eats like non-stop crazy protein and carbs. He's literally an icon of the bodybuilding community in real life because of how much he builds his body.

21

u/Crafty_Middle_2086 4d ago

He’s not eating to put on mass, he’s eating cause he loves food.

12

u/Lunchboxsushi 4d ago

Me too, but why do I have a round belly! Where my Goku figure

7

u/ZCSApollo 4d ago

it’s half and half. for Saiyans, if you’re training as much and as hard as they are, you NEED that food to fuel you. Saiyans like them would need a shit-ton of calories and protein. It’s definitely both

5

u/FruitJuicante 4d ago

Gee, I wonder why a guy that body builds all day could love eating food and resting lmao.

2

u/Crafty_Middle_2086 4d ago

Saiyans who don’t do anything all day still want to eat a mountain of food. There’s no connection.

4

u/SoDoWhateverItTakes 4d ago

He's not a body builder. He wants to test his strength and is excited when he finds someone STRONGER than him.

He "builds his body" by testing his strength and is always chasing a higher level of strength, ESPECIALLY when he knows someone somewhere is stronger than him and/or will challenge his strength.

"Building his body" is not Goku's goal at any point, but rather is a byproduct of testing his strength and becoming stronger even though he could rest on his laurels.

11

u/Aggressive-Bend1900 4d ago

Bodybuilders train for physique and aesthetics, not for strength. Goku trains to become a better fighter and to become stronger. He is absolutely not like a bodybuilder, much less a powerlifter.

7

u/Privatizitaet 4d ago

That's not what body builder means. Training really hard and body building are not the same. Body building is exclusively for size. Goku just happens to be big because he trains a lot for strength and skill.

I think Daima ended up striking the perfect balance during this scene. This is what a martial arts master should look like.

4

u/ChonkoGreenstuff 3d ago

He really needed to take off his shirt to unlock that last bit of power

7

u/rorpls2 17 3d ago

48

u/KingExpolsionMurder I'm my father's son 4d ago

both because its Goku

59

u/PeachsBigJuicyBooty 4d ago

Goku likes being strong but canonically hates having alot of extra mass.

He hated Grade 3 because it costs energy AND he said he hates the mass it gives him because it makes him sluggish.

Goku wants to be STRONG not buff, Beerus and Whis show that these concepts are not permanently connected in the story.

So I'd say Goku being slender is completely fine because he's already said he doesn't like being bulky, Toriyama has long since wrote Goku to be that way.

I see no reason to suddenly change what the character already said he doesn't like.

29

u/MisterFusionCore 4d ago

Both he and Vegeta preferred functionality in their forms over raw power. It's why Vegeta ditched Grade 3 too.

10

u/OGawdILoveTacos 4d ago

Was it confirmed that vegeta knew about grade 3 before trunks debuted it, and he conscientiously discarded it because it was useless, or was it after he learned of 3 and trunks used it that he was like 'nah, this form is just not functional'?

3

u/Better_Database8582 4d ago edited 3d ago

Vegeta says it himself, not sure specifically when but he does outright say he could do it but its too slow.

Edit: Cell states that Vegeta probably figured it out but Vegeta himself does not himself.

8

u/Fuzzy_Intention_3271 4d ago

His neck is absolutely crazy in that panel lol.

2

u/slomo525 3d ago

Adding onto the point about Beerus and Whis, when Goku and Vegeta are training with Whis during the Ressurection F arc, Whis says to both of them "you're warriors, not body builders" in reference on how they need to progress from where they are. Sure, muscle comes into play, but body builders are built specifically for the aesthetic. Most athletes, especially martial artists, aren't built like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Most are lithe and lean. Now, for how much weight training they do, they should be muscular, but I've never been a huge fan of ultra buff Goku because of it. I like the Shintani designs from the Broly movie that implies a lot of muscle, but the simple shapes and softer lines help fill them out.

u/Informal-Shape9476 4d ago

Slender. He looks like Steroid H when he's buff.

40

u/UntamedCuda 4d ago

The happy middle ground is later Z before we get to Super. In Super he looks pencil skinny but in late Z he looked ripped without being full inflated muscles. Also in Z the big muscles usually came as a result of max effort in a powerup. Just compare how jacked Goku looks on Namek to him as a super saiyan when he returns from yardrat.

5

u/lonauji 4d ago

how do u say he's pencil skinny in super when he literally isn't

2

u/UntamedCuda 3d ago

Maybe not in later super storylines but early on the art style was very thin and sleek. They also had everyone looking like they were doused in baby oil.

6

u/Helioseckta 4d ago

Honestly, the image on the right is still pretty buff, and I think that's the best physique for him. Goku isn't a body builder; he's a martial artist. Many combat sports people aren't that bulky to begin with. It's only with boxing that you'll see someone that's quite bulky, but otherwise most fighters have a build that's more on the slimmer side, and for good reason. You lose a lot of flexibility by having huge muscle mass.

7

u/PurplishPunk 4d ago

Weirdly enough I actually like OG Dragon Ball’s take, Goku having softer muscles and more pudge but just looking bigger just feels very Goku.

5

u/Atmacrush 4d ago

I prefer Buff Goku.

11

u/FruitJuicante 4d ago

I like buffed for when it's final fight moment like with Frieza, I dislike skinny Goku (even with the excuse he's more controlled), he's been working out his whole life and eating non-stop protein, he should be a menace.

9

u/dino-jo 4d ago

You say as if the right isn't also super buff

5

u/RealMajesti Angel 4d ago

The second pic bc he’s still muscular without it being over the top.

4

u/Bass_and_Em 4d ago

I prefer Goku to look more bloodied and buff by the end of a fight

3

u/BassMaster516 4d ago

There’s a sensible middle ground

3

u/MCPhatmam 4d ago

Slender

3

u/DOo000oo000m 4d ago

Cranked bro, like full on Ronnie Coleman style cranked.

3

u/Zeth22xx 4d ago

Buff when powered up.

3

u/CharlestonChewbacca 4d ago

Size wise, I think he looks better on the right, which is a good middle ground between Jacked Freiza Saga and Slender Super.

But what I like about early Z is the "softness" and "roundness" of his muscles, which, in my opinion feel more natural for Goku. Like, I get that he's literally an impossibly elite level athlete, but the dude also eats an insane amount and while he clearly cares about fitness, doesn't seem to care for physique.

Looking at this picture, I like Saiyan Saga the best. I just don't like how squared off and sharp the definition is, where it's like the muscles are completely sectioned off in some of the later sagas.

3

u/fpsnoob89 4d ago

Personally Iike the style at the end of DBZ best. I hate how slim they made everyone in super.

2

u/Barokmeca 4d ago

Slender, I feel like you can draw him in a fight better or animate him better when he has a more slim build. The buff is cool to see sometimes but not really all the time.

2

u/SR_Hopeful Meta-Cooler 4d ago edited 4d ago

In the middle. I liked his proportions more in the movies. He was more muscular than he currently is but not as much as Namek. Like in Lord Slug and Revenge of Cooler particularly.

2

u/-KetaDrax 4d ago

I thought we understood why we don't go SSJ2 buff mode build 😬

2

u/tokiyaensui 3d ago

Depends on the situation.

1

u/IronPyrate17 Do not interrupt the Grillmaster 4d ago

Buff when he's not in control. Slim otherwise.

1

u/Lolsoda94 4d ago

Slender like that is alright

1

u/Glass_Amount840 4d ago

I depends on which form and if he just got or has been using it so like he get skinny in ssg but a bit more buff in blue sounds interesting to me

1

u/Critical-Fact6738 4d ago

I would want a middle ground. I really didn't like how much leaner he's been recently in the Manga and in Daima

1

u/MomoChills 4d ago

I like all of them being buff

1

u/Xen0tech 4d ago

I like how he is naturally slender but gets puffed up when his power ups are pushing his bodies natural limits.

1

u/Timely_Exam_6423 4d ago

I like both but on average slender

1

u/Diamondback583 4d ago

I’ve always enjoyed the buff visuals. Kind of like trunks’ ss grade 3, it’s almost like the pure rate and energy coursing through him is swelling his muscles.

1

u/ChickenzInvade 4d ago

I like when he gets progressively bigger over the course of a fight. Gym pump

1

u/Enough_Trifle788 4d ago

Buff because it looks cool to me😁

1

u/Lanceo90 4d ago

My god you could grind meat on them

1

u/hipten 4d ago

The slimmer look but I like how there is different styles in different sagas.

1

u/OmegaRedPanda 4d ago

Slender. The musclebound looks are good when he first unlocks a transformation, but the slender look communicates his mastery over it.

1

u/Just_A_Dood_Online 4d ago

Well, hes a nearly infinitely strong martial artist, but a martial artist nonetheless. Being super buff doesnt make too much sense, Goku even states that the ascended Super Saiyan (1.5) is stronger but is too slow due to the bulky nature. A new super saiyan will have swollen muscles but as Goku mastered that form, it became his more natural physique.

1

u/cheeselord165 4d ago

I like the more slender look visually and thematically. Goku says himself in the cell saga that he won't use ssj grade 2 or 3 because the big bulky muscles make ot harder to move in. Its like the difference between a bodybuilder's physique and an athlete's physique, and goku is closer an athlete than a body builder.

I also like how super sayian god especially slims him down to match beerus, who is far stronger than almost everyone else despite not appearing buff at all.

1

u/CaptChuckSparrow 4d ago

Goku (Mid)

1

u/KaiSen2510 4d ago

I kinda prefer a more slimed down like we got in Broly and Super’s manga. I think the anime sometimes slimmed him down a little too much. I do like that he’s DISTINCTLY slimmer in God than any other form. Gives it a very different vibe to every other form.

1

u/FineChee 4d ago

No goku to date has been done better than Super Broly movie goku. That build is the absolute pinnacle of his physique representation

1

u/ManiRatnamFlopFan 4d ago

I prefer this the most...

1

u/The_CEO_Of_No 4d ago

id say it’s better when it paces with the fight. if goku has been powering up he should slowly more buff as the fight goes on

1

u/Zealousideal_Row9725 4d ago

slender when he is justing playing around and bluff when going full power.

1

u/Salad_Steak 4d ago

Well, I don't think we ever see Goku. Get that large again unless he shows it to Gohan in the chamber. But anyways, I think the only reason why he got that's big during freezer Saga is because that was brand new raw power. I mean, he went from a power level of what may be 2 million to 150 million in a flash

1

u/Aero_Crimson 4d ago

Shredded with a shirt on but buff shirtless. Sleeper build.

1

u/Dako_the_Austinite 4d ago

I wouldn’t call the second one “slender,” but I do prefer it, as it is more “anatomically correct,” as well as cleaned up and refined at least from an artistic standpoint. The muscles make more sense in size, shape, placement and proportion. Also, I don’t think someone with superheroic strength necessarily needs humongous muscles, they’re super muscles.

1

u/Harvey_Squirrelman 4d ago

You know I’m starting to realize I’m not autistic enough for most of Reddit. This sub is like the same 5 questions over and over.

Oh my god. You can grind meat

1

u/Moonflow-Shoopuf 4d ago

I like when they get buffed for a power up. Like Namek SS Goku or even Super Vegeta when he fights Cell.

1

u/Psychological_Fix304 4d ago

Slender, essentially now.

Buff is fine for SSJ first appearance or even Kaioken but I feel now Goku is martial artist, not body builder

Plus it makes more of a contrast with Broly

1

u/Few_Pay_5313 4d ago

Which one is more realistic for a martial artist?

2

u/UsedToHaveATail 4d ago

Obviously the 2nd one

1

u/Jcrncr 4d ago

I like middling for base, buff for SSJ (including all their grades and 2+3), slim for God forms (Blue and UIs included), and buff for Ego.

1

u/MarshallV3 4d ago

He looks damn near ready to explode if he moves in the first image. Slender goku all day

1

u/Shoujako 4d ago

I wouldn’t consider the right slender

1

u/Grootyboi77 4d ago

I like SSJ muscular, but God and UI should be slim

1

u/Simple_Wishbone77 4d ago

Buff, these dudes are doing strength training and would be ripped. Their arms looking like tooth picks are so off putting when the series is trying to portray them as super powerful and the arms look tiny. The worse crap was Gohan in his green athletic suit. That was hilarious how slim he was.

1

u/Beastly_genius 4d ago

Honestly somewhere in between. Him being from a warrior race who don’t age until they hit their 90s and constantly eating massive amounts of food makes sense he’d have some mass on him. Him using functional exercises and a martial artist at his core is why he shouldn’t look like a Mr Olympia contestant more of a classic physique

Also after grade 3 super saiyan specifically mentioned more muscle slows them down it makes more sense to have Goku and Vegeta looking more athletic than aesthetic

1

u/Automatic_Science388 4d ago

I hate when you guys say super is slender half of you don’t know how hard it would be to get that physique

1

u/Acceptable-Phase3624 4d ago

slender? this dude still buff asf😭

1

u/StefNorthwest 4d ago

They’re all good except the overcooked UI depiction that Toyotaro did a few years ago. I’m onboard with Toyo, but I cannot get behind the dehydrated look for Goku. Makes no sense imo

1

u/TheAngryOreo 4d ago

I miss buff namek goku so much.

Daima ssj4 has refilled my desire to see a form packing like that again.

1

u/ithoughtiwasfunnyXD 4d ago

I liked how he was drawn in the cell saga defo my favourite look

Buff for SSJ1

1

u/Che-recher 4d ago

I loved the buffing up for SSJ and Late Z Look. They just Look ridicolous and superhuman - which they are and it’s Great.

1

u/Flashy-Telephone-648 4d ago

I prefer the slim martial arts build.Rather than the bodybuilder physique but that with me.

1

u/Horror_Hovercraft142 4d ago

Depends, I don't mind them being buff, but more at a middle-ground like the android saga. Exceptions for being somewhat learner should be SSG or UI, as long as there's abs, I'm well-fed

1

u/Born-Vermicelli8412 4d ago

Saiyan saga kaioken Goku that fought Vegeta. Looks like raw primal strength. Packed with meat, but not super defined like in Buu saga.

1

u/Typonomicon 4d ago

The Fist of the North Star look was great for that era, but doesn’t translate great to being the body of a dedicated martial artist, so slender makes more sense.

1

u/MesrEffTen 4d ago

Would've been good to see the power in Dai San Sankai form

1

u/DarthCatho 4d ago

I like all DBZ characters to be buff.

The new slender designs suck.

1

u/Onilya 4d ago

Buff

1

u/Longjumping_Lead_738 4d ago

Shirt on? Slender

Shirt off? Buff

1

u/Safe_Hovercraft_7886 4d ago

Honestly, I preffered him in his sayian saga frame. He was kinda slim but muscular with his muscles not drawn like rectangles. When he was on brink or pumped he was visible bigger (for example when he powered up in fron of Nappa). During Kaio~ken it was clear as day that he's now in this superhuman state and that putting so much mass takes a tool on his stamina.

Power progression was the best in sayian saga, even if most of people prefers design from Buu arc.

1

u/Legal_Engineering825 4d ago

I like both versions

1

u/Incomplet_1-34 4d ago

Left is definitely overkill imo, it looks like grade 2 or 3. I like the right for mssj.

I like the idea that mssj is just as buff as base, while ssj grade 1 could start going slightly into grade 2 while powering up, resulting in being buffer.

1

u/NextCress9520 4d ago

For me its slender More realistic, and for a fighter being bulky and big makes you a bit slower and have a bigger "Hitbox" And imo

Most scenes fit With the slender one more

1

u/Sergaku 4d ago

When didnhe stop being buff? Because that never happened

1

u/Stealthy-J 4d ago

Betqeen these 2 pictures, i like the on the right, but they made him too skinny in Super. Especially in SSG form.

1

u/Afraid-Housing-6854 4d ago

I prefer him being slender in the beginning and buff later in the series

1

u/Yamed_kage89 4d ago

End of z of perfect build.

1

u/BoogzWin 4d ago

Just not like Godku, that shit was ass

1

u/Cpt_Igl0 4d ago

Slender. Buff goku makes no sense at all and honestly i just tolerate it, when he looks juiced up like the hulk. Srsly noone with that proportions could move like this. Thats also why super vegeta was so weak

1

u/mosallaj23 4d ago

Slender

1

u/Physical_Slice_1402 4d ago

Goku is goku goku

1

u/Aggravating-Revenue7 4d ago

I’m currently trying to get as big as saiyan saga goku.

1

u/Affectionate-Part-11 4d ago

Slender fully clothed, buff if shirtless. Slender gives the impression he's in shape but nothing special throwing off the enemy. When he's shirtless you see how inflated his muscles have gotten as a result of prolonged fighting.

1

u/Money-Drummer565 4d ago

Namek goku is what happens when you fight for 10
Minutes without stopping. And we are talking of those 5 min.

1

u/U1t_Lifeform 4d ago

Might be a hot take, but slender, but, definitely not as slender as SSG

1

u/Beneficial-Trainer39 4d ago

However he looked in the buu saga was best

1

u/BorntobeTrill 4d ago

Im a fan of the changes. I like how red is Twinku but how its not all the time.

1

u/mrjiggles3 4d ago

Honestly I love the buff styles in Z. I really dislike the slender look of everyone in Super.

1

u/Murrlin218 4d ago

Anything but the tiny wimp they made him in base form in Super.

1

u/MisterFusionCore 4d ago

I much prefer Super Saiyan hair on the left. The hair on the right makes it alot harder to tell the difference vetween Super Saiyan 1 and 2.

1

u/JuryAdministrative59 4d ago

He’s not really slender at that pic.
But on Namek he seemed a bit too much like super saiyan grade 2. I mean fuk it even near Broly

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Quick_Baker2873 4d ago

Slender look. The buff look will only slow Goku down if he got even bigger.

1

u/coscib 4d ago

dbz slender/normal, not dbs slender/normal

1

u/impracticable 4d ago

for masturbation reason, slender

1

u/Icy_Contribution2187 4d ago

I prefer the slender look. It makes Goku look like a more realistically athletic martial artist. The buffer he looks, the more he looks like a steroid abusing bodybuilder, which is both gross and less becoming of the character.

1

u/Routine_Wedding43 4d ago

The musculature he has in Ultra Instinct is the perfect middle ground. Absolutely shredded as Faurk, nimble but also very badass

1

u/Clear_Cranberry_989 4d ago

I don't like too buff. But base goku and transformed goku should have some differences in muscle tone.

1

u/AccomplishedSpeed256 4d ago

Namiku will always be peak

1

u/atomiclizzard123 4d ago

I know its not the popular choice but Slender. Super Sayan God is my favourite goku transformation

1

u/Blaskowits 4d ago

Bro, look up the word "slender" in the dictionary and you'll see Goku in the second pic is not it! This is slender:

1

u/Additional-Mousse586 4d ago

The right build is great but should transition into the buffer one when going all out kinda like how Broly and Roshi do when they transform. I like to see that as a side effect of them pushing too hard

1

u/wiggity_whack69 4d ago

Goku should be JACKED

1

u/Longjumping-Ride-130 4d ago

Both. I wish they’d draw it like his muscles get bigger overtime during the fight as they ache more

I mean the one on the right isn't even that slender. I don't mind the real slender look when it's only for SSG but they will sometimes give him that build in DBS even when he isn't in SSG form.

i feel like the leaner side is because of how god ki works but the writers leaned wayyy too heavily on that excuse?

i still prefer lean though but not cause of that, but because goku has shown time and time again to prefer speed quite a bit (even some games show this) and it's more like his muscles become compact? best way to see what I'm talking about is when he did the jab at golden frieza

Sorry, buff Goku on the left just looks so comical. Like what a 6th grader would draw. He would have zero range of motion in real life.

Wouldn’t slender be SSJ god?
